Film

Director's cut:
Singer, actress, model… and director. Madonna's directorial debut, Filth & Wisdom has been lauded by few and slammed by many as in this scathing review from the Guardian. Still, the jibes are an improvement on comments made in the past about her acting. The film, about three friends who follow their dreams, is being shown at lunchtime at Arthouse Le Paris - so check it out for yourself. Isn’t lunchtime cinema one of the best things ever?!
Thursday 12.15 pm, Le Paris

Design

Trendspotting: Blickfang, the nation’s largest design fair, opens its doors this Friday for a weekend of furniture design, unusual accessories and intriguing fashion looks and is a good place to hunt down those elusive presents for the festive season. Can’t get enough style or substance this week? Then catch a radio interview with Patricia Field (the stylist from Sex and the City) when she was in Zurich last week – on World Radio Switzerland’s Swiss By Design Thursday, Sunday and anytime on podcast from Thursday onwards.
Blickfang 21-23 Nov, Kongresshaus

Beats and comedy

Entertain me: Mascotte once again hosts the best stand-up comedians to start the night with a chuckle. Canadian Tom Stade and Englishman Andrew Lawrence are the latest in the Funny Laundry series. Afterwards at the Miami Vice party, Smash FX celebrate the launch of their latest record Two Worlds combining the duo’s passion for techno (Tony) and favourite electro and nu-rave (Daniel).
Funny Laundry 6.30 pm, Mascotte
Miami Vice 10 pm, Mascotte

Animation

Action: Don't blink while watching one of these films or you might miss them, as each of the entries is just ten seconds long. This might be troublesome for those who’ve had a late Saturday night. This is the fourth Minimotion film festival and the only condition to enter your movie is that it must last no longer than ten seconds. After the second screening, the best three are awarded at Riffraff. It's free but you’d best book a ticket in advance by email.
Sunday 10.30 & 11.30 am, Riffraff

Gig

Rap meets poetry: In the past many have tried to mix hip hop with pop or electronica and failed, but Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip have bucked that trend. Some of their songs remind me of an electro version of The Beastie Boys. Take note, the concert has now been moved from Abart to Hafenkneipe
Tuesday 8.45 pm, Hafenkneipe

James Bond

Coalfinger: I was a bit deflated after watching the latest James Bond - "our" home-grown 007 movie. So, here’s a 5-minute animated version of the British agent film genre – he’s a Bond who works for Greenpeace and fights the bad guys as well as global warming. A film with lofty aims and good intentions.

Good to know

Politics: Yes, we’re a neutral newsletter – being Swiss, what else could we be? But you might be interested in what locals in Zurich are voting on this month. Aside from national and cantonal elections, there are issues which affect the cityscape and future housing. Zollfreilager: The proposal is to reclassify the area called Zollfreilager in Albisrieden as a habitation zone rather than industrial. If that happens, about 1,000 flats and shops could be built there. Most parties support this, as the city needs more space for living, but opponents argue that such changes must include a guarantee that a percentage of these will be social housing. Kronenwiese: The field above Letten has space for roughly 60 housing units. The area is well-connected so most parties are in favour. Opponents argue that this ecologically valuable meadow in the city needs to be sustained. Neufrankengasse: The city council wants to secure space for a tram line between Langstrasse and Hohlstrasse, for which public and private boundary lines need to be moved – even though the tram line is not due for 20 years. Supporters say that the current boundaries go right through Kreis 4, so the change would ensure that the district is safeguarded, while opponents fear that 20 buildings containing low-cost flats will be torn down and replaced by a big road.

Web

Take a break: We help you to take your mind off work. A different kind of ping pong. The guys probably watched too many action and karate films. Creative art: Just recently I came across Jacob Cass' blog with 92 Must See Creative Photos which includes some real, um… must see photos.

Eating

Oriental delights: M. Houraibi is Lebanese and lives in Switzerland and, for many years, he’s made it his duty to bring Lebanese cuisine to the people of Zurich. Since 1996 the restaurant Le Cedre at Badenerstrasse 78 offers Mezzeh as their house speciality – small dishes served hot and cold, with hummus, pieces of lamb or vegetables. Delicious!
