Art exhibition

Live art: The initiators of the online art platform Jewelbox take their first step from the web into real life with an exhibition at Papiersaal (whose first floor, Papiersaal White, with its industrial flair, is in my opinion the highlight of Sihlcity). Purchase a painting, sculpture or photo by an up-and-coming artist at non-Sotheby's prices. Vernissage is on Friday, Finissage on Sunday.
Friday 6 pm, Papiersaal

Fashion sale

Lucky 13: Street-Files on Badenerstrasse is known for its selection of newcomer fashion labels. They’re celebrating Friday the 13th by offering a 13% discount on their whole line of goods and giving Ron Orp readers the chance to win one of twenty vouchers for 20 francs. Good luck on this allegedly fatal date.
Friday 11 am-7 pm, Street Files

Zurich sound 1

Musical dreams come true: Disco Doom from Zurich have been around for 12 years and finally, finally have recorded an album, Dream Electric, for all fans of rough indie sounds. They play at Ziegel oh Lac - the restaurant in Rote Fabrik - with Sinai Divers. This band from the French part provides the perfect musical accompaniment to a view of the lake, even when it's grey.
Friday 9.30 pm, Ziegel oh Lac

Zurich sound 2

Electronic feat: The line up of GS live will get fans of electric music hopping in circles as all DJs play live sets (hence the name). This Friday at Zukunft, Valentino Tomasi & Domenico Ferrari featuring Kalabrese make sound, followed by Digitaline from Lausanne and Berlin (their first time in Zukunft), Michael Ho and finally Canson.
Friday 12 am, Zukunft

Zurich sound 3&4

More of Zurich's music scene: Asleep plays at Papiersaal Red (second floor, above the aforementioned art exhibition) followed by Evelinn Trouble. Both label their style as pop but they couldn't be further apart within this genre. Asleep’s sound is characterised by smoky voices and playful guitars while Trouble's crystal clear vocals dominate her set. Further down the Sihl river in the middle of the city, Dub Spencer & Trance Hill - from Zurich, where else - play at El Lokal, rather spherical dub, reggae, electronica sound.
Saturday 9.30 pm, Papiersaal
Saturday 8.20 pm, El Lokal

Movie night

The Fly: I seem to have started a tradition of recommending a film for Monday. This week, Filmpodium shows the 1986 version of The Fly. Jeff Goldblum plays an eccentric scientist whose teleporter invention, meant to transmit matter across space, goes awry and transforms poor Jeff into a giant man/fly hybrid. Like many of David Cronenberg's films, The Fly deals with themes of bodily disfigurement and the darker aspects of human behaviour. Subplot is a doomed love affair between the scientist and a reporter, played by Geena Davis (beautiful throughout).
Monday 8.45 pm, Filmpodium

Good to know

Second hand: I’m not going to talk about the financial crisis (too much bad news in the media already) but you may be interested in some good second hand shops in town and online. Second hand venues let you discover favourite pieces from the past as well as getting rid of clothes that you don't wear anymore yourself. Secondseconds: This online second hand shop just opened this month for clothes and gadgets. Even if you’re not in the market, check it out for the beautiful photos of the merchandise. Lahaina: Another online portal which offers barely worn clothes, shoes and accessories as well as selected designer labels. Shops: The city of Zurich lists a few second hand shops on their website. Of that selection I really like the funky collection at Fizzen, which actually started out in Berne. The Fundsachenverkauf is also worth checking out; it sells off objects that were lost in the city and never picked up. Furniture: The Swiss love their Brockenhaus, thrift shops where you can find all the furniture you ever wanted (and plenty that you didn’t). It often takes some time to find real treasures but the hunt is half the fun. Aus Zweiter Hand lists all the Brockenhäuser in the city.

I don't love you either: Serge Gainsbourg, who died in 1991, remains one of the most influential French singer/songwriters. If you're not familiar with his name you certainly know one of his songs, Je t'aime…moi non plus which he recorded with Jane Birkin. She is still on tour, singing this Wednesday at Kaufleuten. If you want to see Gainsbourg, check out this youtube clip in which he embarrasses a young Whitney Houston on French TV.
Wednesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten

Eating

Soupy-Kaspar: When it’s cold outside (why is it still so cold outside?), nothing warms you up like a nice hot soup. Suppenkasper at Birmensdorferstrasse 171 offers three different homemade soups for take away at lunchtime. You can also pick up some quick essentials at the same time, like deodorant in case you end up too warm. Btw, the venue is operated by the same team that run Kafi Schnaps in Wipkingen and Zum Guten Glück in Wiedikon.
