Fashion favourite

Online fashion: Zurich's Hopehope is having a party to celebrate its new issue. The city’s fashion cognoscenti are readying themselves for an evening of sharp sounds (and looks) at Zurich’s latest greatest party venue Seefeld-Razzia. The guests for the night are Kimandra Vintage Clothing, so I’m bringing my spare change along and hope to find a special sartorial something.
Thursday 6 pm – midnight, Razzia

Party night

Jean genie: was the title of the David Bowie classic that still influences today’s music. And classic meets contemporary new at Hive on Thursday night, where Levi’s® is re-launching the 501 with a club night devoted to new French and British electro. Parisian DJs Busy P (Justice) and Kavinsky and the British live duo autoKratz, fuse electronic music with rock in their own imitable ways.
Thursday 10 pm, Hive

Indie concert

New York comes to Zurich: The anti-folk singer/songwriter and comic book artist Jeffrey Lewis sings about everyday life with a self-deprecating sense of humour in his oddball mix of acoustic and punk. Supporting him at El Lokal is Dan Costello – whose influences range from diverse sources like folk, hip hop and Broadway – and newcomer Elizabeth Devlin, who accompanies herself on autoharp, giving her songs a spooky edge.
Friday 8 pm, El Lokal

Sale on Saturday

Shopping spree: Vintage clothing is du jour and at Kaufrausch, a new online store, you can buy second-hand designer threads without even leaving your armchair. Convert your closet cast-offs to cold hard cash, as they’ll sell your old stuff online too (for a 50% fee). If you want try before you buy, Kaufrausch is holding a sale (cash only) at the swanky bar Valzer at Kreuzstrasse – the bar is open too!
Saturday 3 – 7 pm, Valzer

Film

American tales: One of the most prolific directors of all time, Martin Scorsese has nearly 30 feature films under his belt, from the early De Niro-heavy classics like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver to later works like the Oscar-winning The Departed, and the blues documentary Feel Like Going Home. Fans will be thrilled to learn that Filmpodium is showing them all in their month-long retrospective.
Saturday 8.45 pm, Filmpodium

Jazz concert

Three men from Zurich: create a sensation! The Rusconi Trio have gained fans since the release of their first two albums, not least because of their innovative new jazz sound which fuses traditional Swiss sounds with invigorating rhythms and poetry. Critics in the jazz world don’t give praise lightly but have hailed the piano players as “exciting new European jazz sensations”. Catch them live at Mascotte.
Sunday 7.30, Mascotte

Good to know

Museums: Summer’s here but you can’t always guarantee rain-free leisure time. As it’s International Museum Day on Sunday, I’ve compiled a guide to some of the museums in Zurich, many of which may have special offers for the day. Design: In a city that’s renowned for its graphic arts and illustration, the Museum für Gestaltung has the second largest collection of posters anywhere in the world. Try the Everything Design exhibition – it traces cultural change through objects and images. Contemporary art: Just down the road from the design museum at Limmatstrasse is T he Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst which prides itself on supporting new artists from all over the world, combined with contemporary Swiss artists.Currently showing Scottish and Swiss painters, Karla Black and Christoph Ruckhäberle. Art: The Kunsthaus Zürich is the holder of the city’s proud collection of masterpieces. Check out the exhibition of the famous Swiss artist Giacometti which looks at his work and its parallels with ancient Egyptian artefacts. Photography: A short trip to Winterthur will bring you to the city’s Fotomuseum, where the exhibitions are often challenging and vary from classic to contemporary works. Joakim Eskildsen’s work documenting Gypsy communities is particularly dramatic. History: Like a fairytale castle, the Landesmuseum or Swiss National Museum is by the main station. If you’ve been baffled by Swiss humour in the past, then the Witzerland exhibition, will help you make sense of it with examples, past and present.  Ethnography: That’s the study of people and cultures to you and me! The Völkerkundemuseum der Universität Zürich lies in the old Botanical Gardens and is chock full of artefacts and displays items from ancient and modern cultures outside of Europe. Its speciality is its extensive textile collection.

Midweek affair

Hip hop and you don’t stop: Los Angeles-born Madlib received enormous critical success as his alter-ego Quasimoto with the 1999 album The Unseen LP. Since his debut in 1993 on Tha Alkaholiks' 21 and Over, the rapper, producer and DJ has had a varied and lengthy career, making a name for himself in the late 90s with his group The Lootpack. He’ll be playing tracks from his latest release, Beat Konducta at the Clubraum in Rote Fabrik.
Wednesday 9 pm, Clubraum Rote Fabrik

Eating

Classic club style: It can be tough to find a restaurant in Zurich that’s open all day long, especially when you want a more formal atmosphere. Ristorante Toto in Seefeld is a stalwart favourite for those who know what they like and like what they know. The smart and simple Italian restaurant is great for impromptu work meetings, as well as a cosy place to take your parents/in-laws for lunch. They have a vast range of pizzas and good home-made panna cotta.
