Bar hopping

Discover Zurich: Müllers Lust and their djs (Rocco Pop, Regional Liga and Bontempi Djs hosted by Melchior B.) will take you to a variety of venues throughout the night in their Limmat Edition. There won't be any swimming involved, just crawling from one bar to the next. Be on time or you won’t find out where the night is headed!
Friday 10 pm, Museum für Gestaltung

Concert II & III

Music love affairs: Jessica 6 (their former name was Deep Red) stop in Zurich on their European concert tour. The members play with Hercules & Love Affair as well and have used a touring break for recording. This Friday they present their new hits at Stall 6. Friday also sees the start of the musical festival taktlos.09 at Rote Fabrik, with experimental sounds offside from mainstream.
Saturday 0.30 pm, Stall 6
5-7 June, Rote Fabrik

Be proud: After a month of cultural, political, scientific and sporting highlights, Europride 09 concludes with a glamorous city centre parade on Saturday, followed by a big party. An alternative to the official Europride programme is offered by queer festival off_pride with burlesque acts, concerts, parties, workshops, discussions and films from Friday to Sunday.

Ron’s perfect weekend

My selection: There is so much going on this weekend that I've already started to compile a list for a good mix. Saturday starts off with culture at the Live Art Battle, held in the Freitag production halls (Hardstrasse 219, halle L). Afterwards I’ll head over to Mars Bar to enjoy some lazy, jazz pop with Ituri and on Sunday I‘m off to Werdinsel for a grappa and wine tasting, hoping it’ll be warm enough to clear my head in the river afterwards. I can't wait!
Saturday 3 pm, Freitag
Saturday 8.30 pm, Mars Bar
Sunday 11 am, Werdinsel

Good to know

Open-air music festivals: According to some international bands, no other country has such a high density of open air music festivals as Switzerland. I don't know whether this is due to the nation having such beautiful countryside, affluent people (tickets aren’t cheap) or that we’ve inherited the camping gene! But here some highlights for June – starting off, of course, with Zurich.
Stolze Openair presents local bands at Stolzewiese in Kreis 6 for free, 5-6 June. Hoch-Ybrig is a three day affair featuring the best of Swiss music scene with Patent Ochsner, Seven and Stress, amidst an idyllic mountain range, 12-14 June. Greenfield Interlaken hosts international stars such as Faith No More (my absolute favourite band in the world, welcome back!), Billy Talent and Nightwish, 12-14 June. Open Air St. Gallen ranks amongst the most renowned Swiss music festivals, this year with Nick Cave, Mando Diao and Editors, 26-28 June. There are some big open-air festivals abroad that I'd recommend too. Fusion takes place on a former Russian military airfield in the middle of nowhere in northern Germany, with an amazing line-up, 25-28 June and Sonar in Barcelona isn’t just for music – it’s also a multimedia art festival, 18-20 June.

Web

Pool game: Get to know Zurich's offer of outdoor and indoor pools with Dana Keller's Badiquartett. Dive into this Top Trumps-style game and discover which venue is the oldest, which one has most lifeguards and where to find the best spots for flirting. The card game is in German but the short texts are ideal to learn a few terms while sunbathing and to brush up your local knowledge. I have three games to give away.

Eating

Garden restaurant: Gessnerealle is the home of avant-garde theatre in Zurich with the restaurant Reithalle in the same building. In summer the venue opens its beautiful garden just by Schanzengraben serving fish and meat straight from the grill, with salad and fresh vegetables. Although the location is picturesque, I'm always a bit disappointed by the summer food which tends to be overpriced and less tasty compared to their winter (indoor) menu.

The Clowns are going to New York ... : A group of failed clowns finding their fulfilment in the rock’n’roll circus: Not funny ... but hot. What kind of music a bunch of clowns might play, you ask? Well, it's probably best described as: "guitardriven garage soul". They will play about 8 Gigs throughout New York, the first being at CLUB EUROPA 30 May with Dee Day Dub. Find all the dates and venues on The Clowns Myspace. And don't forget to tell your friends in New York and Philly about this ...
