Art opening

Until now: The gallery Burgerstocker celebrates its opening with an exhibition of Silva Preiss’ work. She records daily impressions, people and landscapes with pen and gouache, varying in style from abstract to caricature. Her latest series includes figures and groups torn out of coloured paper. The exhibition opens this Thursday and runs until 20 August.
Thursday 6 pm, Burgerstocker

Bar opening

The sleeping beauty wakes: Fritschiwiese is a park in Zurich that I often cycle past but have never stopped at. I assumed that no one goes there, except when the sun is out you might see a few families sharing a picnic or some teenagers playing sport. However, this Thursday, the café Z am Park at Fritschiwiese re-opens its doors with music and arts – at Zurlindenstrasse 275.
Friday 6 pm, Z am Park

Clubbing

Dial night: Efdemin and RNDM (aka Pigon) know how to combine the different facets of house and techno in a masterly fashion. This Friday, they play at Zukunft, supported by local maestro, DJ Jauss. Lovers of dubtechno shouldn’t miss this chance to see the guys from Berlin in action, just as they begin their breakthrough to the big time.
Friday 12 am, Zukunft

Music

Shakespeare in love: A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare is a story about love, reality and dreams. Susanne Mecklenburg (voice) and William Hancox (piano) recite a composition inspired by Shakespeare's play on Saturday and Sunday at Alter Botanischer Garten. The program (which explains which part of the story the song is about) will also be available in English.
Sat & Sun 7pm,
Alter Botanischer Garten

Weeknight affair

Back to the groove: Düde Dürst showcases his latest release (progressive rock, funk and psychedelic blues) at El Lokal this Monday. Don't know him? Düde is one of Zurich's legends. He’s just turned 60 and began his musical career in 1963 with the band The Starlights (later The Counts). He's done too much to summarise, so let his music do the explaining.
Monday, 8.20 pm, El Lokal

Midweek affair

Las Vegas in Zurich: Every Tuesday is poker night at Bling and June heralded the start of the so-called Killerblatt Series. Generally the events have participants from all over the world. Best to register in advance, as the evenings are often sold out. In June, Bling is open on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
Tuesday 7 pm, Bling

Good to know

Open-air cinemas: It seems June is in the middle of an identity crisis and thinks it’s actually April – bringing cold and rain instead of sunshine. Let's hope the temperatures rise again soon, after all, summer officially started on the 21st. For me, there’s no such thing as a summer without open-air cinemas (and vice versa… when I think about it). So why am I talking about open-air cinemas today when they don’t start until July? Because from 30 June you can book tickets for Orange Cinema, and the seats are generally gone within days! So here’s the list: Film am See at Rote Fabrik: 2 Jul - 27 Aug. Filmfluss at Untere Letten: 8 - 26 Jul. Sommerkino Röntgenplatz at Röntgenplatz: 10-18 Jul. Freiluftkino Xenix at Xenix: 10 Jul - 15 Aug. Orange Cinema at Zürichhorn: 16 Jul - 16 Aug. Openair-Kino Röschi at Röschibachplatz: 21-22 Aug.

Web

Happy people: The Happy Tree Friends are cute, cuddly animals whose daily adventures always end up going horribly wrong. You probably know them through MTV. If you've never heard of them you've probably been living under a rock (not my words, I'm quoting HTF's website here!) Catch and watch the most popular episodes online at the website.

Eating

Tour de Neufrankengasse: This week I recommend one of my favourite restaurants, Tessinerkeller at Neufrankengasse 18, where you can enjoy tasty traditional food in an understated low-key environment. I suggest you start with a drink at the Mata Hari Bar, then head over to Tessinerkeller and, afterwards, if you fancy a nightcap, walk down the street until you reach Mars Bar.
