Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 2.7.09: Summer break, silent parties & open-airs II

Recess

Summer break: Like many of my readers, Ron Orp's Mail will be taking a vacation soon, so you'll receive two more weekly newsletters before I take my break for summer – after that the next one will follow in your inbox on 2 September. Although I won't be able to keep you completely in the loop for those six weeks, you'll find highlights for each week I’m gone in the last newsletter before the recess.
Give my love to the city,
Ron

Book signing

Missing link: What do the band Beck, the series Futurama and the film Juno have in common? All have featured art by Tara McPherson. The New York-based artist comes to Zurich this Thursday for a book signing of her latest tome, Lost Constellations, at Perla-Mode (on the corner of Langstrasse/Brauerstrasse). The gallery also displays some of her silkscreen works, which are rarely available to buy nowadays, and the after party takes place at Mata Hari.
Thursday 7 pm, Perla-Mode

Party

Shut up & dance: The first silent open-air party in central Europe takes place this Friday at Polyterrasse (the terrace in front of ETH's main building) organised by headphoned. Three bars, two lounges and one pasta stall will sustain you over the course of the night, while you dance in silence. Why silence? There is a DJ line up but everyone hears the music through headphones (which you’ll get at the door), so there is no noise pollution (except if somebody sings along).
Friday 8 pm, Polyterrasse

Film cycle

Eccentric characters: Joel and Ethan Coen have entertained viewers with their unique mix of surreal comedy, grotesque violence and irony for more than 25 years. Reason enough for Filmpodium to dedicate a film cycle (1.7 - 15.8) to the two directors. The series starts with their crime debut Blood Simple.
Friday 8.45 pm, Filmpodium

Night market

Good night and good luck: Nachtmarkt (night market) continue this Saturday at Kulturmarkt with its (un)usual mix of fashion, toys, music and food. If you're in the mood for a short journey, head to Baden on the same night, where its local Nachtmarkt is held in the summer tent by the Kurtheater.
Saturday 7 pm, Nachtmarkt

Concert

Summer breeze from the north: Nuh, a five-man band from The Netherlands, has been hailed as an inside tip for the last four years. They play their own songs, covers in Dutch and English, jazz, funk and blues this Sunday at Kafi für dich. Rene Jongen's sweet-rough voice – melancholy yet hard as rock – is outstanding, accompanied by a piano, guitar and bass.
Sunday 8 pm, Kafi für dich

Midweek affair

Soul at Zurich's green lung: Alina Amuri is frequently labelled as "the soul of Africa in the heart of Zurich". She plays with her band this Wednesday at Bäckeranlage. The concert additionally features Lamin Jobarteh and A'mett.
Wednesday 8 pm, Bäckeranlage

Good to know

Open-air music festivals: As promised, here are the highlights of open-air music festivals in July and August.
Jazzfestival Montreux features much more than ‘just’ jazz, with various free events alongside their standard concerts. Bands include Alice Cooper, Boo Boo Davis and Lily Allen, 3-18 July. Live at Sunset is our local festival featuring Katie Melua, Stephan Eicher and Jamie Cullum, 8-19 July. Openair Frauenfeld is a three-day affair providing a good mix of international and Swiss acts with 50 Cent, Bligg and Seven, 10-12 July. Gurtenfestival's line-up sees more renowned bands every year. From 16-19 July you can listen to bands such as Oasis, Franz Ferdinand and Travis, and, conveniently, they also sell single day tickets. Paléo festival Nyon is one of the largest festivals with over 120 concerts, this year with Moby, Placebo and The Prodigy, 21-26 July. And last but not least, Gampel festival hosts 40 bands in four days with Maximo Park, Lovebugs and Stress, 13-16 August.

Web

Urban camping: Camping downtown on towers? American Architects make this dream possible with portable towers. What a great idea – I’d even have a go at it myself! Zurich should get a few. I’d prefer them to the Primetower anytime.

Eating

For meat eaters: Gaucho is a catering service, which imports the best Argentinean beef. To taste it, either attend one of their culinary events, like the one at Kaufleuten Lounge this Monday, or simply order it online.
Monday 6.30 pm, Kaufleuten
