Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 17.9.09: Madonna, MoMa & Jim Jarmusch

Ladies’ night
The concept of a ‘ladies’ night’ takes on a whole new meaning at the Frauenbadi Zurich. Clitcare.ch presents “The Feast of the Senses”, an oasis of sensual pleasures with a perfume lounge, surprise performances, and the latest Clitcare products. Free admission.
Thursday 6 pm, Frauenbadi Stadthausquai

High art, low prices
I’m always on the lookout for a way to satisfy my Picasso-price taste on a starving artist’s budget. So this week I’m off to Galerie Münchow for Art Warehouse Zurich, where international artists’ high quality works are being sold at bargain prices.
Thursday 6 pm, Galerie Münchow

Stock up
Just in time for the opening of London Fashion Week, 1508 and Fashionslave host ARTLAUF at the Alte Börse. Three young designers, Comana, Lynlyngerie and Jasfree bring their best pieces to the catwalk, and Nasty Trash and Electroferris all aim to get the crowd dancing late into the night.
Friday 8 pm, Alte Börse

Post punk poet
I’ve always thought that Jim Jarmusch's movies have their own special signature, which is reason enough for a whole series of the director's life work, currently on show at Xenix. This week’s film (Jarmusch’s second ever production) Stranger Than Paradise (1984) is in moody black and white and tells the story of a young Hungarian woman who travels to the US believing it to be the land of opportunity.
Fri-Sun 7.15 pm, Xenix

Madonna
On Saturday, Madonna's latest album Celebration goes on worldwide release. The official party in Switzerland takes place in Zurich at Kaufleuten. Head to Kaufleuten's website and you can enter a draw for free tickets.
Saturday 10 pm, Kaufleuten

Temporary gallery
The Villa am See (villa at the lake), next to Rote Fabrik, hosts a gallery opening with full wall paintings and installations, where each room has been transformed into a body part of a robot. The accompanying Space Party starts at 11 pm, with tunes by Prince Vega, Mikki Leela and Garcon Sauvage.
Saturday 9 pm, Villa am See

Good to know
Switzerland has a new federal minister. After 11 years in office, Pascal Couchepin, nicknamed “le roi” (the king), has resigned. Based on the public vote two years ago, other parties (Couchpin only represents the FDP) have had their eye on the seat. But, on Wednesday morning, parliament elected another FDP politician in the third round – Didier Burckhalter.
And a former federal minister has also been making the news this week; as the first-ever Swiss to feature in South Park. In the episode Canada on Strike, the Swiss federal president, Joseph Deiss, negotiates at the United Nations with an agitated Canada, who demands “some of that internet money”. Catch Deiss after the first 17 minutes!

MoMa portraits
What’s it like to work in one of the most significant museums of the world? Filmmaker Thilo Hoffmann asks some of the employees at the Museum of Modern Art in New York about their work environment in a series of 30-second shorts. A beautifully-produced project.

Eating
Kronenhalle - renowned for the local speciality Züri Geschnätzlets with Rösti, this is also the spot in Zurich where you're most likely to see someone famous. If the prices on the menu don't fit your budget, head around the corner to the sausage stall Vorderer Sternen where, many believe, you’ll get the best Bratwurst in town. Be warned – the mustard is hot – very hot!
