Take two

Roman Polanski was arrested but The Zurich Film Festival continues nonetheless. I have two pairs of tickets to give away for P-Star Rising on Thursday. In this documentary, a former rapper guides his talented nine-year-old daughter through the music business. Main character Priscilla "P-Star" Diaz (now twelve) will give an exclusive concert at Mascotte later on.

Bye bye summer

The swim season is officially over, so Rimini is covering its lounge with a tent. With its cover on, the comfy chill-resistant venue opens, heralding the start of the winter season (which seems a little depressing!), this Thursday.
Thursday 5 pm, Rimini

Get Jade-d

New Kreis 2 nightlife spot Jade Club opens its doors this week, and the soulful hip-hop and edgy electro tunes of DJ Hands Solo, Fish Gordon, and DJ Sam get the party going. Jade Restaurant, which boasts an extensive wine list, opens on 5 October.
Friday 11pm, Jade Club

By JIM, it’s Lidell

If you missed him at the Blue Balls Festival this summer, now is your chance to catch the soul-singing, Motown-channeling, beatboxing one-man band that is Jamie Lidell. Live at Kaufleuten, Lidell will perform songs from his latest album “JIM,” which won Best Pop/Rock Album at the Independent Music Awards.
Saturday 7pm, Kaufleuten

Short days - long nights

Insomniacs, sleepwalkers and anyone else avoiding sleep on Sunday morning, are all invited to join the first of many Flush Afterhour with DJs Gogo, Pasci, Valentino, Mark A. Brook and Membrane. The parties will always take place on the first Sunday of the month from now on at Förrlibuckstrasse 180.
Sunday 6 am, Flush

Zurich rocks!

You may think Zurich is a quaint, tranquil little town! I think Zurich rocks and so do a few party organisers. Head bang at Karaoke from Hell at Mascotte (Tuesdays), rock at Alte Metzg (Wednesday to Saturday) or rock and roll at Killers & Virgins at St. Germain (first Friday every month). Or swing you hips to Latino rock at Flamingo and visit the Rockmarket at Supermarket this week.
Fri 11 pm, Flamingo / Wed 9 pm, Supermarket

Good to know

Podcast with pop philosopher: Zurich-born Alain de Botton’s books have been bestsellers in more than 30 countries and cover topics including love, travel, architecture, and now, work. He’s written eight books and he’s still only 40! He chats to Jennifer Davies (the co-editor of Inside Switzerland Magazine) on Swiss By Design on WRS about his Swiss roots and why we’re all so obsessed with getting a dream career. The show is repeated on Saturday at 7 pm and will be available on podcast.
Thu 6.30 pm / Sat 7 pm, WRS

Web

Science fiction changed the architecture of urban design. In an essay The City Is A Battlesuit For Surviving The Future, Matt Jones analyses the future of cities referring to urban designers, architects and comic books.

Veggies unite

There are quite a few vegetarian restaurants in Zurich nowadays. The best known are probably Hiltl and Tibits. A bit less known but perhaps even better is Samses at Langstrasse, which celebrates its 4th anniversary this Friday. Stop in, try their tasty bites and you'll be a veggie convert in no time.
Friday 5 pm, Samses

Rent an appartement in New York: My Girfriend and I are planning a trip to New York the first week of November. For this we were looking on craigslist.com for people, who are renting their appartements. Our problem is: How do we know, it's not a fraud? Has anybody been in NY and made good experiences? Any recommendations how we can avoid getting screwed? Thanks for your help!
