Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 20.5.10: Senior citizens, social media & swim season

Dear friends,

If you've ever stood in front of closed doors because one of my suggestions got cancelled, then let me apologise now. In future, if I hear about a cancellation, I’ll post it on my facebook page. It would be nice if you became my friend there too.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Senior art

Senior Design Factory is an atelier which organises cross-generational art projects. Their latest is the creative competition 75+. A surprising 120 artists answered their call (yup, the silver backs are fit!) and five designs made it to colourful t-shirts, bags and cards. You can view them at the opening today at Globus.

Who is Len?

After playing several gigs around Switzerland, Len Sander are returning to Zurich to play a homecoming gig this Thursday, at Hive . Rather than a single artist, Len Sander are a 6-piece Zurich based band who play a standard electro/trip-hop mix, that is given a special touch by their Spanish influenced singer. I have 2 pair of tickets to give away.

We are social media

You’re most likely a user of social media. This Friday at Dock 18 (Rote Fabrik) ideas to use social media in a creative or artistic way are presented: such as skype live concert, chatroulette cabaret and much more. More along these lines you find on starmind.com. Oh, and if you bring five friends you get a bottle of prosecco for free.
Friday 8 pm, Dock 18

The Rat Pack are back

Whilst most of Zurich’s baths opened last week, Seebad Enge will officially reopen this Friday. On Saturday they are allowing both of their bath houses to be put to very different uses – in the lefthand side, Frankie & Tony , will perform their Martini-soaked act, living up to the best that the Rat Pack had to offer. Whilst in the righthand side, the Champions League Final between Bayern Munich vs. Inter Milan will be shown (free entrance). Never let it be said that Ron doesn’t give you a cornucopia of choices.
Saturday 7 pm, Seebad Enge

Bank Holiday, big beats

With Monday being a bank holiday, why not make full use of your extended weekend and let the techno and dupstep influenced  sounds of djs Martyn and Shackleton rock your Sunday night at Dub Ex Machina, in Caberet. Expect big basslines and complex beats. Also in support are Barcleona’s Subsound, recently signed to the B-Low label. When you’re given an extra days holiday, it only seems right to have an extra nights partying.
Sunday 11 pm, Cabaret

Feel the funk

Hailing from New York and with a sound somewhere between Sly and the Family Stone and LCD Soundsystem, the Phenomenal Handclap Band will perform their retro space-funk sound at Ziegel Oh Lac (Rote Fabrik), this Tuesday. I’m sure that with this loose collection of djs and musicians you’ll be doing more than just clapping your hands to this band.
Tuesday 9.30 pm, Rote Fabrik

Good to know

Last Thursday was the official opening date of Zurich’s outdoor pool areas along the lake and the river. As you're probably not tempted to test the water temperature just yet, it's good to know that many also offer poolside entertainment. Pier West: On the left side of Obere Letten at the Limmat there’s a concrete construction from 1952. At dusk, from 27 May, this area turns into a barbeque place and bar with music. Rimini: The swimming area at Schanzengraben is open to men only during the day, but is available to all from 5 pm, when it offers food and drinks in a relaxed atmosphere. Barfussbar: Just near Bürkliplatz, this lido is only for women during the day. On Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday in the evening it's open for everybody with food, drinks and cultural entertainment. Unterer Letten: This pool at the Limmat is marked by a wooden bath-house built in 1910 and is one of Zurich's oldest pool areas. Every Tuesday evening it hosts a bar and in July there’s an open-air cinema.

Hip, hop, hippity, hop

You could describe the duo Kon and Amir as a walking music encyclopaedia. They absorb music and the stories behind the songs en masse, which makes their compilations legendary. Even hip-hop masters like Dr.Dre are glad for their know-how. The two guys now published a selection of the 50 best hip-hop samples online. Ch, ch, check it out!

Disastrous art

It made our transport system fall apart – the Icelandic volcano Eyjafjallajökull. (Ten points if you can pronounce it!) We saw a lot of impressive pictures. But that wasn’t enough for Sean Stiegemeier. He decided to go to Island and capture the mood on video.
