Zurich (EN) : 3.6.2010: Good Causes, Aussies & Mobs

Dear friends,

As you know, i love Zurich and from the photos you send to me, i can see that many of you have the same feeling. If you have a picture of Zurich you love, then click on the tiny link at the bottom of the page, and send it to me. If I like what I see, I will feature your image in a furture newsletter, and eternal glory will be yours.
Last week, I also asked if any of you have any city recommendations but forgot to include my email address. Keep them coming. E-mail me here

Give my love to the city, Ron

Hi Gast,
you have:
Auction angels

Juliette Chrétien and Julia Brütsch were shocked by a documentary on the trafficking of women in Switzerland and decided to launch ‘Kunst gegen Frauenhandel’. They asked well-known Swiss artists for their help and so an impressive art collection came together. This collection will be auctioned tonight in Hive and 100% of the proceeds go toward helping women in this terrible situation. The duo Hinterletscht will host the auction with music provided by Philippe Chrétien and DJ Dome.
Thursday 6 pm, Hive

Sweet Beats

After the fundraiser, i advise admirers of electronic beats to stay around in Hive because Maluca will be playing a set of her very danceable sounds. New York hard beats meeting exotic rhythms overlaid with rap is the cocktail of influences she brings to close this very important evening.
I have 2 pairs of tickets to give away.

Down under, up here

Ned Collette and his band Wirewalker, are an Australian indie-rock band who have found some success in Europe, and now come to play in Switzerland at the Longstreet Bar. Their music is created with gentle percussive and melodic layers over which the songs are presented, and create a sound that is the perfect accompaniment to an (early) summer’s evening.

Thursday 10 pm, Longstreet

Classic meets electronic

TonhalleLATE provides a younger audience (under 25) a surprising encounter between classical and modern music. This year’s event is classically led by Michael Sanderling conducting artist in residence, Julia Fischer as well as the Tonhalle Orchestra. This will be followed up by live and dj sets from  Jazzanova and Jamie FioritoProjecktil will provide the visual art entertainment to what sounds like an exciting, eclectic clash of cultures. As i mentioned, this is especially for all you younger Ron readers out there.

I have 2 pairs of tickets to give away.

e-mail me.

Friday 10 pm, Tonhalle

Dance to the next dimension

If you thought recently that your clubbing nights needed a little something extra to get you going, then Novak 3D disco could be what you’re looking for. They are the originators of the fully audio visual 3D club experience, and have played in clubs across the UK and also the Glastonbury Festival and are playing at Abart this Saturday. You bring your eyes and dancing feet and the 3D glasses will be supplied at the door.

Saturday 11 pm, Abart

Mellow Summer

Zurich’s own, Prader and Knecht, will be playing a set of their folk/americana inspired songs at Casablanca this Sunday. The sun may well be shining this weekend and summers on the way but i think this duo’s mellow and soulful songs about love and friendship are the perfect comedown to finish the weekend.

Sunday 6 pm, Casablanca

Diamond Life

Marina and the Diamonds is being hailed as the UK’s next big thing for 2010 and will be performing her new album, The Family Jewels at Kaufleuten on Tuesday. Already being compared with Florence and the Machine’s grand indie-pop sound, Marina brings her unique voice and quirky vision to life even though, just like Florence, she is really just a solo artist.

Tuesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten

Good to know

Alain Tanner is one of the most renowned Swiss directors. It’s likely that you’re more familiar with Marc Forster (James Bond) or Bettina Oberli (Late Bloomers) as their work is more current. But Tanner was gave us insightful films and his masterpiece, Jonas (1976), was an international success in the US and the UK and even won the New York Critics Circle for best script. Another great Tanner film is Le milieu du monde. The two films are now available as a DVD-set, of which I have two to give away.

Get down

Flash mobs have been one of the stranger real world extensions of online social networks for some time now. Here’s a video of some Zurich mobbers calmly, and unexpectedly, changing the urban landscape one sunny day, to the amusement and bemusement of onlookers. I know Zurich can be relaxing, but...

Red garden

Last Friday was the opening of Le jardin rouge. It’s part of Basislager the temporary creative hub which is at Räffelpark at Binz. On the surface it’s just another gravel square, some benches and a stall which sells food and drinks on Friday all summer. But I’ve fallen for the spot: Le jardin rouge is Rote Fabrik 5 years ago, or Oberer Letten 3 years ago or even Xenix 2 years ago. Meaning a wonderful spot, but not yet overrun. See you there!
