Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 5.7.2018: Slow turn, love goes bang & party on the roof

Hello Ronster

Can you feel it coming? Saturday is the day when all our earthbound worries disappear and we head for the freedom of the skies (and the backyards). Yes, it's my Rooftop Day and, as usual, the beautiful Ronsters of Zurich have come through again with glorious rooftops, terraces and gardens for you to play on and in. I'll send you a special newsletter on Friday with all the information you'll need for a sun-filled, fun-filled day.
Give my love to the city...and the sky

Sport: Run for Rhinos

Whenever i do sports, i imagine myself to be in the water surfing, or climbing an exotic peak. This Thursday, these dreams become reality at Run for Rhinos in Zoo Zurich. Run through the hot Masoala forest and climb the sparse heights of the Himalaya's without leaving town. It’s for a good cause: Rhino protection programme in Kenya.

Thursday 6 pm, Zoo Zurich

Concert: Love goes bang

If you prefer your indie-rockers to take a more experimental route to your heart, then Zurich's A Bang and a Whimper are definitely worth a one-night stand, and maybe even a phone call afterwards. They may use the basic tools of indie - guitar, bass and drums - but add distinctly hypnotic and chaotic rhythms to their music, as well as a lyrical finesse that a band like The National have deployed so successfully. They'll be playing a free open air concert on the riverside at Dynamo on Thursday.

Thursday 8 pm, Dynamo, Wasserwerkstrasse 21, 8006

Festival: Publicly private

Stadionbrache Hardturm was historically the home of the Grasshoppers Football Club, but in 2008 it was demolished, and in 2011 the wasteland was handed over to an association to organise temporary cultural events. So what to do with this abandoned piece of land? Well, if you ask artists, the answer will always be to fill it with art of course, and that's exactly what's happening until Saturday with Living Room, a festival of art that has invited over 50 artists, performers and musicians to transform this anonymous public space into an intimate private environment with installations, performances, live music and artwork. Free entry.

Thursday to Saturday 5 pm to 10 pm, Stadionbrache Hardturm, Hardturmstrasse 269, 8005

Party: Paradise by the lake

Residence K is the urban art and electronic music hub down at the lakeside of the Tiefenbrunnen harbour, and this Thursday is the opening night of their month-long open air extravaganza of sunshine and music. They already have an on-site pool, bar and Asian food trucks to give you that hedonistic feeling, but every evening for the next few weeks (except Mondays) they'll also have a huge selection of different djs and party labels playing the finest electronic soundtrack to your summer life. Chill-out or dance? The choice is yours. Feeling like heaven is a place on Earth? There'll be no choice. Free entry.

Thursday to 4th August (Tues - Fri from 4 pm, Sat & Sun - from 2 pm), Residence K, Hafen Tiefenbrunnen, Bellerivestrasse, 8008

Festival: Letten the sunshine in

If you're spending any time in the city during the summer, chances are, that at some point, you'll end up lounging, swimming, drinking and generally chilling along the Letten at either the Primitivo, Stazione Paradiso, Parkplatz or Dynamo bars. Like tropical flowers, these places disappear during the winter months but return, full of colour and life, every summer. This Saturday, they'll be joining forces and putting on a big party called Lettenfest. They'll have an excellent selection of local live bands and djs to entertain you throughout the day and night and, if your hot partying ways get the better of you, you're just a short slip and slide away from the cool of the river. Free entry. With rain, it will move to next Saturday (14th July).

Saturday 12 pm, Primitivo, Stazione Paradiso, Dynamo and Parkplatz, Oberer Letten, Klosterfahrweg, 8037

Cinema: Tropical silence

Silence may be golden, but if you mix it with a little black and white, and a sprinkling of colourful sound, you'll get an evening of great openair silent cinema, soundtracked by evocative live electronica. On Saturday evening, at Seebad Utoquai, they're showing the 1931 Oscar winning film, Tabu: A Story of the South Seas, a love story set on the tropical island of Bora Bora, accompanied live by the mellow electronic sounds of Pacific Star & Guida.

Saturday 9 pm, Seebad Utoquai, Utoquai 50, 8008

Design: Space print

Max Grüter is a Zurich artist, 3D-printing sculptor and, by his own admission, the first virtual astronaut. You may have seen his space-themed 3D-printed objects and figures having pride of place in the bookshop at Kosmos. This Sunday he'll be back at Kosmos where, for CHF 10, he will turn any piece of clothing or textile you bring along into a unique screen-printed piece of art.

Sunday 12 pm, Kosmos (Forum), Lagerstrasse 104, 8004

Concert: Slow turn

Carved onto the Mount Rushmore of soulful bluesy rockers, John Hiatt stands as tall and proud as Van Morrison, Ry Cooder and Bonnie Raitt. Although he may not be as well known as these fellow travellers, his music has the same heartbreaking honesty and hard-earned grit as the best of them. In the late 80's he recorded two of his most successful albums, Slow Turning and Bring The Family, (one of which was named one of the best albums of the 80's), and on Monday, at Kaufleuten, he, and his band, The Goners, will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Slow Turning by playing the album in full, along with many of his other hits. I have 1 x 2 tickets to give away.

Monday 8 pm, Kaufleuten, Pelikanstrasse 18 8001

Music of Excellence: Concerts in July

It's July, which means school holidays, emptier streets and closed clubs. Instead, there is a lot of outdoor music taking place. Here's my must-see concerts this month including a Youtube- and Spotify-Playlist.
