Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 22.2.2018: Fake band, city diary & a bit of glamour

Hey Ronster

You know all of those photos of Zurich you've got on your phone? Why not set them free and become the famous photographer you always knew you should be. Each week a Ronster's photo sits atop my world-famous newsletter and, if you upload yours here, then you could be the next. They don't have to be staggering works of art, I'm a simple man, with simple tastes, so just a flavour of your own private Zurich is also most welcome. Fame and glory await.
Give my love to the city,
Ron’s Signature

Eating: Sihlmatt goes Goldene Fass

I am used to guest chefs in restaurants, but restaurants visiting other restaurants is a new one for me. Sihlmatt, the small idyllic restaurant that lies in remote Menzingen, comes to Goldene Fass in Kreis 4. The plan sounds good, as Sihlmatt travels with its own fish tank all set to prepare blue trout à la Sihlmatt, with a lot of butter served with homemade side dishes. Welcome to the hood, Sihlmatt. We'll also visit you once, i think you look very pretty.

Thursday from 6 pm until 17th March, Zwinglistrasse 7, 8004

Party: Doctor knows best

If you have an itch to go to an après-ski party without leaving town, and a fever to slip into your tightest retro ski wear, then Dr. Brauwolf has the remedy to cure all your ills. The Doctor and his craft beer brewery are having their first party of the year this Friday, and it just so happens to be a Retro Après Ski Party. He'll have lots of music and food, as well as a vast array of some of his excellent craft beers. There'll also be prizes for the most retro après skier there.

Friday 5 pm, Dr Brauwolf, Räffelstrasse 26, 8045

Reading: Passages from India

If Africa was the birthplace of humankind, then India was surely its first school. Out of this great civilisation sprang our first important concepts of mathematics, philosophy, written language, politics and, let's not forget, yoga, chess and...buttons. Who'd want to live in a world of zips? If you'd like an insight into how the oldest civilisation in the world sees itself in the 21st century, Literaturhaus have invited many fantastic Indian authors, publishers and translators to the Tage Indischer Literatur weekend, to give readings from their books, and discuss how writers and fiction can best reflect this rich and complex country.

Friday to Sunday various times, Literaturhaus, Limmatquai 62, 8001

Concert: Fake band

There comes a time in every band's life when, if they've been around long enough, they choose to take one of two paths. The first is living on past glories - i'm looking at you, Rolling Stones - and the other is to continue to experiment and stay true to their youthful passion. The Charlatans are a band that, despite their 30 years, are full of youthful passions. They came up in the UK during the 90's with a string of classic indie singles, and have been as vibrant and melodic ever since. They'll be playing at Mascotte on Saturday night.

Saturday 7.30 pm, Mascotte, Theaterstrasse 10, 8001

Film: Invisible ink

The Israeli/Palestinian conflict is the great scar on the face of modern society but, whatever we think we know about the situation and its history, the devil is always in the detail. On Sunday, Cafe Palestine will be screening the documentary, The Great Book Robbery, at Quartierzentrum Aussersihl, which tells the hidden story of the how thousands of cultural, religious and historical Palestinian books were confiscated by the Israeli state in 1948, and kept in the National Museum. Despite its serious subject matter, the film is beautifully made, and is really a love letter to the deep passions people feel toward literature, and its place in their culture. They'll be serving Palestinian food before the screening, and there will be a discussion afterwards. Free entry.

Sunday 5 pm, Quartierzentrum Aussersihl, Hohlstrasse 67, 8004

Concert: Great Danes

The Danish band, WhoMadeWho, is made up of a techno producer, a jazz fiend, and a Bowie fanatic, and somehow, out of all of that, they manage to sound nothing like their influences, and yet, like pieces of all of them. They've been making their crisp electro-pop for around a decade now and have perfected the art of having moody slow-burn electronica sit alongside bouncy dream-pop. They'll be playing at Plaza on Sunday, and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away.

Sunday 8 pm, Plaza, Badenerstrasse 109, 8004

Exhibition: City diary

Peter Bialobrzeski is a fantastic German photographer who likes to travel, and when he does he likes to create photo diaries of the cities he visits. His series of books entitled City Diaries have captured his experiences and impressions of cities as they pass through traumatic times. For Cairo Diary it was the Arab Spring, for Athens Diary it was the Euro crisis, and now Photobastei have invited him to Zurich to create our very own diary. I'm not sure if Photobastei know something we don't, so hold tight. Rather than the book being published first, an exhibition at Photobastei will document the process in real-time, and grow daily as Peter takes more photos of the city. The actual Zurich Diary book will eventually be published at the end of the year.

Monday 6 pm to 4th March, Photobastei, Sihlquai 125, 8005
