Concert: By any other name

Lucy Rose is well-named. She seems delicate, slightly prickly and, I'm sure if you got close enough, would smell delicious. This English singer/songwriter has tunes that will wrap you in their arms and tell you everything will be alright. She's been solo for a little while, previously backing Bombay Bicycle Club, but has already made a name for herself in the UK. If you're looking for an evening of melodic melancholia then she'll be playing at Papiersaal tonight (Thursday), and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Email me.

Thursday 9 pm, Papiersaal, Kalanderplatz 6, 8045

Party: Shopping celebrations

Two of Zurich's cooler design and clothing stores are celebrating their anniversaries this week. Tonight (Thursday) is the Street Files birthday. Street Files began 10 years ago in a dingy backroom, as an online only contemporary streetwear store, and have since grown and opened actual stores in both Zurich and Basel. Their birthday celebrations are taking place in their store at Viaduktstrasse and they'll have djs supplying the tunes, with gourmet Swedish hotdogs and Street-Files Prolo-Bier to stave off the autumnal chill. The other birthday is on Saturday for Saus & Braus, who have been supplying beautifully designed clothing, accessories and interiors to Zurich for the last 20 years. They'll have a range of exclusively designed anniversary items for you to peruse, as well as drinks, canapés and birthday cakes. Live music will be supplied by the always debonair Frankie&Tony (at 2 pm) with special guest de Bianco.

Thursday 7 pm to 12 am, Street Files, Viaduktstrasse 31, 8005

Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Saus & Braus, Ankerstrasse 14, 8004

Running scared: They're coming to get you

When it comes to corporate marketing campaigns my patented 'Ron B.S. Radar' will often jump to overload, but when they get it right then, 'All Hail Our Corporate Overlords', i say. On Friday evening Mercedes-Benz are organising the Urban Hunt, a real life cat-and-mouse chase through the streets of our fair city. The cats are three new Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupés and you, dear Ronster, are the mouse. The cars will be racing around the streets hunting you down, while your job is to basically avoid them. If they catch you, you're out of the game and will be sent to a corporate gulag (or to the nearest bar, if you prefer), but if you're the last-mouse-standing with the most 'health points', you'll win the car. As well as having fleet feet and the skills of a ninja, you'll also need to download an iPhone or Android app to take part.
Friday 7 pm, all over the city

Party: Golden brown

As of last Thursday, summer ended and the golden days of autumn were officially ushered in, but before we welcome in the new, it's always polite to say goodbye to the old, and so to mark this transition, Frau Gerold's Garten will be having a Summer Closing day on Saturday, which will have an Autumn Market full of goodies for the coming colder months, a live acoustic music session and a grilling area. But remember, this isn't the end of Frau Gerold's Garten but simply the beginning of something new as their winter season activities kick into gear, just as autumn isn't the end of our good times but is simply a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, Frau Gerold's Garten, Geroldstrasse 23/23a, 8005

Tour: Open sesame

Zurich may not have the ancient architecture of Rome or the futuristic skyline of Dubai but, in its own modest way, has been constructing innovative and progressive buildings for many years. On Saturday and Sunday, Open House Zurich will be opening the doors, and offering guided tours, of 60 historical and contemporary buildings around the city. The selection of buildings cover the whole urban landscape from churches, theatres and schools to apartments, workshops and studios. Details of all the buildings you can visit are here, as well as the times for the tours, all of which are free.

Saturday and Sunday, various times and locations

Concert: Blow your mind

Ok, Space Cadets, prepare for lift-off. Flamingods are coming to town, and they want to take you away. Take you away from time, and space, and maybe even your own mind. This 5-piece band, made up of members from London and Bahrain, have embraced the idea of 'world music' and taken it cosmic. They bring together instruments from Africa, Asia and the Middle East, and create a heady brew of psychedelic-folk-rock that straddles the past and future, East and West, and occasionally the sun and moon. They'll be playing live at Neo on Wednesday evening.

Wednesday 8.30pm, Neo, Europaallee 47, 8004

New kid on the block: A small piece of freedom

My name might not be David but all my life I’ve been looking for freedom (give yourself a treat and click the link!), and recently I found a small piece of it in Zurich - without the help of Knight Rider. Kleine Freiheit is a new beer garden/bar just between Central and Haldenegg. A lovely spot, where time seems to stand still, where conversation flows and where you just feel at home. The team behind it just decided that they will remain open during rain and winter. I’m not sure how they will keep the cold out of my bones, but whoever is able to create such a cosy place in central Zurich will certainly come up with a good idea.

Kleine Freiheit, Weinbergstrasse 30, 8001. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7.45 am to 11 pm, Saturday 10 am to 11 pm, Sunday 11 am to 8 pm

Drinking: The new cult drink

Have you been to La Pêche yet? No? Then you'll have to hurry as it will only remain open for a few more days (closing date: 1st October). It’s a great little place with lots of plants, champagne, margaritas and bellinis, but it’s also where you get a taste of the next cult drink: Flocka Coka. Sorry, I’m not allowed to tell you the secret ingredients but I can tell you that it’s quite addictive.

La Pêche, Langstrasse 20, 8004. Until 1st October

Good to know: Discover Zurich for free

Summer is great, but somehow all that sunshine can leave very little time for anything else than lying around outdoors. Maybe, with autumn being here, you might have some time to plan exploring the city. The city council just updated their range of free walks around town. All tours are free, in English, and there is no need to book ahead. Downtown: Take a wander through the central part of town and find out how historic figures such as Charles the Bold, Albert Einstein or Marc Chagall influenced the city. The tour starts every day at 11 am at Paradeplatz and takes 90 minutes. Zurich West: Take a walk through the re-urbanized old industrial part of town from Viadukt to Primetower as well as Technopark and Schiffbau. The tour starts every day at 3 pm in front of Primetower and takes 90 minutes. Historical tour: Feel the spirit of history during a walk through the old town. Standing at the original locations, you learn about the development of Zurich from a modest Roman toll station to an important medieval town of the German Empire and later of the old Swiss Confederation. The tour starts every Saturday and Sunday at 11 am next to UBS at Paradeplatz and takes 2 hours. Langstrasse: Step into Zurich's red light and find out more about sex, drugs & rock’n’roll. The tour starts every second Saturday at 8 pm at Helvetiaplatz and takes one hour. Expats: Last but not least, there is even a tour especially for you, my dear expat Ronsters. Get acquainted with Zurich's culture and life, learn what is important when living in Zurich. Every 2nd and 4th Thursday at 7pm, meeting next to UBS at Paradeplatz, 2 hours.

Ron’s video gem: Gone with the wind

You want to kitesurf but there's no wind? No problem. Just try drone-surfing and wind will remain an old school problem.
