Stage: Village people

The UNESCO World Heritage list contains locations around the world that have been recognised and protected by the UN for their special cultural, historical or scientific significance. In Switzerland the list includes the old town of Bern, the Lavaux vineyards along lake Geneva and the architecture of Le Corbusier but, surprisingly, something that is also on the list , under the 'living traditions' section, are the amateur village theatre groups from Central Switzerland. If your first thought is, 'the what?!', then let the new play at Gessnerallee, Dorf Theater, enlighten you. The play's creator, Corsin Gaudenz, spent two years exploring this popular Central Swiss sub-culture, and has incorporated its unique traditions, themes and quirks into his new show, which includes participants from five of these theatre groups. In German, with English surtitles.

Thursday to 24th September (not 16th or 20th), 8 pm, Gessnerallee

Festival: Goatfest

Once upon a time, in a green meadow to the north of Zurich, lived a family of goats with fantastical names like Hoobie Doobie, Bounty and Vaniglia. This may sound like the beginning of a fairy tale but, if you're looking for a simple festival with a certain rural charm to it, then you could be living happily ever after at the Wiesenfest at Stadtgeiss on Friday. Stadtgeiss are a non-profit organisation that gives welfare and care to goats, and also offers environmental education. Their festival doesn't have rocking bands or rolling djs but does have the Luna, Levio and Lina Juggling and Artistry Show, a chance to build your very own scarecrow, a theatre show, a barefoot walking pathway, skill games and obstacle course. They'll also have an open-fire grill and bar if you just want to chill with the goats and get in touch with your nature-loving self.

Friday 4 pm to 9 pm, Stadtgeiss, Felsenrainstrasse, 8052 (Zurich Seebach)

Party: You be grillin'

Mark the date in your diary: Saturday, 17th September. It's when two of mankind's greatest achievements will collide - burgers and hip-hop. Five representatives of the Swiss street food/burger fraternity will be battling it out in  Exil for the chance to be crowned King Burger 2016.  Included in the line-up are hometown heroes Herr Jakob and b.good alongside  Kitchenette Food Truck (Baden), Kung Fu Burger (Bern) and J.Kinski (Germany). The dj line-up should also make your mouth water with such hip-hop luminaries as Tereza, Goldfinger Brothers, Gro & Certified, Jesaya and Nadeeya LaFlame & St!pe providing the beats for your burger bites.
Saturday 2 pm to 6 am, Exil

Eating: Eating for the weekend

I think the weekend and food go together just like ebony and ivory, you know, living together in perfect harmony. So, as the Food Zurich festival comes to a close this weekend, they're going out in style. On Saturday is the Zurich Food Party, with 3 halls of the Engrosmarkt being taken over for your culinary curiosity. Hall 1 will have 40 stalls, of mainly locally sourced and produced sustainable food for you to try. Hall 2 houses the Soul Food Club with bite-sized pieces of food from Vietnamese bread, also known as  Banh-Mi, to Lake Zurich caviar. A dj will be supplying your aural and party entertainment. Hall 3 will contain 20 of the best chefs in Zurich all creating their delights at their own cooking stations. On Sunday it's brunch time, as breakfast specialities from around the world are on offer from eggs Benedict and breakfast burgers to Sunday roast and Panda-buns. Free entry.

Saturday 12 pm to 2 am, Sunday 10 am to 2 pm, Zürcher Engrosmarkt, Aargauerstrasse 1, 8047

Concert: Rough with the smooth

If Iggy Pop and Bob Dylan were ever to have a child together (and who's to say that that rascal Iggy hasn't tried), not only would it be a little confusing for the kid, but i'm sure the music that kid might go on to perform would sound a little like  Matthew Logan Vasquez. Vasquez was previously a member of Americana band Delta Spirit, but since leaving and going solo he has managed to cram songs with the fuzzy noise of Iggy and Dylan's acoustic anger onto his new solo album, Solicitor Returns. He'll be playing live at Neo on Monday, and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.

Monday 8 pm, Neo

Talk: The power of yes, man

In the Biblical myth of David and Goliath, a small shepherd-boy defeats a giant warrior with just the power of a well-aimed pebble. In the case of The Yes Men, Goliath is the world's giant corporations and governments, The Yes Men are the shepherd boy, and the pebble is their mischievous and satirical hoaxes. For over 10 years,  Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno have been disturbing the peace as The Yes Men by mocking, pranking and generally messing with the system. By shamelessly impersonating spokesmen and management of various global organisations, and then telling the truth, they shine a light on the abuses and hypocrisy of capitalist dogma. At Literaturhaus on Wednesday evening, Andy Bichlbaum will be giving a lecture entitled Meaningful Mischief, explaining why, and how, The Yes Men operate.
Wednesday 8 pm, Literaturhaus

Eating: The more the merrier

Eating at home? Not quite, but in apartments. Under the name «vier & eins » (four plus one), four apartments are transformed into micro-restaurants at Zwinglistrasse. Amongst the chefs are the gastronomes of «Drei Stuben», «Mesa» and «Herr Jakob». Each restaurant comes with its own concept. And what is the plus one? It's the art gallery that has been turned into a bar where, next to cocktails, you'll get music supplied by Rundfunk.fm. My extra tip - book sooner rather than later, you know how much Zurich likes its pop-ups.
Until 7th October, Zwinglistrasse 10, 8004. Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 6 pm

Shopping tip: Final sale

As Reinblick becomes Schlichtholz at the beginning of October, the shop will be closed for a few years. The founders have invited you, yes you, to join them in a toast for the last three years, and to use this last chance to buy one of their unique pieces that range from furniture to accessories to bicycles.

Saturday 2 pm to 5 pm, Nordstrasse 89

Good to know: Save the word

As an English speaking person you may well be learning German to blend seamlessly in with our Swiss brethren, but did you know that each year hundreds of words disappear, unused and forgotten, from the English language. To try and stop this negative flow, the page savethewords has a freak show full of unusual or exotic words that you can personally adopt, promising to use and keep them alive. If you do, I'm sure you'll be highly celeberrimous among your friends and certainly won't be regarded as a foppotee.
