Party: Take me with you

It's already been 5 months since the purple imp of sex, Prince, left us for his paisley paradise. He may have lived a  Pop Life, but there was a lot of sadness around at the time of his death, indeed i now know what it sounds like When Doves Cry. If your thoughts about Prince were that  Nothing Compares 2 UI Would Die 4 U or that he was a  Sexy M.F., then warm up your Little Red Corvette, slip on your Raspberry Beret and  Let's Go Crazy at the Prince Night at Alte Kaserne on Friday. They'll be playing the Cream of the crop of his hits, as well as the funk workouts, so, if  U Got The Look and want to Gett Off, then just Head  Uptown with the other Girls & Boys and get yourself  Delirious
Friday 10 pm, Alte Kaserne

Festival: Last of the summer wine

Summer may well be fading slowly away but that doesn't mean we have to let go of it just yet. At Guggachplatz over the weekend they are having one of the last openair streetfests of the year, called Musikwelle Guggach. On Friday evening they'll have a bar and grill set up, and a chance to listen to a selection of local bands playing live, then on Saturday afternoon, with the kids in mind, you can take part in a Ping Pong tournament or watch a magic show. Saturday evening will bring more bands for you to see play live. Both evenings will end with a SilentDisco, dj sets played to you through wireless headphones, with Friday seeing dj Trigga Magnum playing a 'trap' set, and Saturday having a 'hits' party from dj Nemo.

Friday 6 pm to 2 am, Saturday 2 pm to 2 am, Guggachplatz (Tramstop: Radiostudio)

Exhibition: School of rock...and art...and dance

I know it may be a controversial idea, but i strongly believe that the children are the future. But more specifically, i believe that the students of ZHdK (Zurich's School of the Arts) are the future of Swiss culture. If you'd like a sneak peek into the crystal ball, then from Friday until the 24th September you'll get the chance to see works produced by these students over the course of the last year at the  Toni! Festival der Künste und des Designs at Toni-Areal. They'll have a full program of cross-disciplinary shows that cover every aspect of the school curriculum including  design, music, art, dance, theatre, film and even video game design See here for the full program. On the last day of the festival (24th September), they'll open their doors during the day for special tours and the viewing of classes as they're taking place, then as night arrives it's a big closing party with djs and plenty of bands from the school playing live. Free entry.

Friday to 24th September, various times, Toni-Areal

Concert: Winner takes all

I believe the saying goes something like, 'Caught between a rock and a jazz fan'. Now, that could be wrong but bear with me. Over the weekend you'll get a chance to hear some of Switzerland's finest jazz musicians play some of the finest rock and pop music in a cross-genre showdown at Hits Recycled in  Moods. On Saturday it will be AC/DC vs. Metallica, while on Sunday the Spice Girls face off against Drake. Each band will compete against each other head-to-head, hit-for-hit, song-for-song in a battle for the loudest audience applause of the evening. Now, if only there was a phrase that could describe being at such an evening, hmmm.

Saturday 8.30 pm and Sunday 7 pm, Moods

Comedy: A horse walks into a bar...

The premise of a stand-up comedy show is simple: comedian stands on stage being funny, you sit in audience laughing. If either of these things is missing then a well aimed heckle or, in some of the rougher clubs i've been to, a pint of beer, is hurled in the general direction of the stage. At the Comedy Haus on Wednesday they shatter this comedic iron curtain and invite the audience to take part in the evening's jollies. At Wednesday Crackers a single theme is chosen for the night, and the comedians will prepare jokes, book extracts, pictures and songs to tickle your funny bone, then, if you feel you have a better joke, story or just an uncontrollable urge for the spotlight, you'll be invited to share with the group. If you'd prefer a more traditional comedy show, then you should know that taking part isn't obligatory, the bar will be open all night, and your throwing arm should be warmed-up. In English.

Wednesday 8 pm, Comedy Haus

Good to know: Shooting boys

This Monday, many of you will only have to work for half a day (move to Zurich for the rest of you!). Because it's Knabenschiessen (loosely translated as Boys Shooting). What sounds like a dangerous sport dates back to 1899 in its present form. It has a military background, and was used to get boys interested in target shooting. Nowadays, the competition is open to 13 to 17-year-olds who either reside or are enrolled in a school in Zurich. Boys and girls can compete since 1991 (girls have regularly taken the crown ever since). I'll assume that shooting isn't your favourite hobby, but Knabenschiessen is mostly about the Chilbi today. Up at Albisgüetli there is a large fun fair starting from Friday.
Friday to Monday, Knabenschiessen @ Albisgüetli

Shopping tip: Born in the USA

It's Sunday morning and you're missing your maple syrup as well as the batter for your pancakes. If you have similar cravings for American food then you should head to Forchstrasse where American Food Avenue opened its Zurich branch in July. Best not on a Sunday though, as they're open from Tuesday to Saturday. Of course you can also order your Butterfingers, Hershey's and Campbell's Chicken soup online.
American Food Avenue, Forchstrasse 162, 8032. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday: 10 am to 1 pm / 2 pm to 6.30 pm, Saturday 10 am to 1 pm / 1.30 pm to 5 pm

Drinking: Cheers!

When innovation meets tradition the result is often something good. In this case three organic beers with the names Django (light), Rodjah (pale ale) and Negro (dark stout with espresso). The creators behind these dangerous drinks are the organic shop L'Ultimo Bacio and the Wädi-Bräu-Huus. I drank my samples a couple of hours ago, so please excuse me for any typos in this newslebber.

Ron’s video gem: Concorde – Why did it fail?

There was a time when it took only three hours to fly across the Atlantic. This documenatry, condenses the history of Concorde into a 10-minute-video and explains why supersonic aircrafts didn't really establish themselves.
