Stage/cinema: Now is the summer of our discount tents

If you're an evil, power-hungry hunchback (and i know there's some of you out there) there haven't been that many role models for you lately, which is why King Richard III has always retained that special allure. Shakespeare's Richard III is one of his finest plays with perhaps his nastiest villain, and currently playing in London at the Almeida Theatre is one of the best productions of the play, with Ralph Fiennes and Vanessa Redgrave in the lead roles. On Thursday evening a live broadcast of the London stage performance will be shown in cinemas around the world, and Arthouse Alba has been chosen as the Zurich venue. It starts at 8 pm and, as this is Shakespeare, will last for three-and-a-half hours with appropriate breaks.

Thursday 8 pm, Arthouse Alba

Party: Urban oasis

What do you do if you're stuck in the middle of the dry, dusty city but want to enjoy the aquatic glories of waterside partying. Well, you find yourself a pool, and have yourself a pool party, of course. This is the solution Soeder have come up with for Thursday evening at their furniture store in Kreis 5. As well as the pool, a bar, köfte and ice cream stands, you'll also be entertained by ETHIMM and La Frère playing live electronica sets, and dj Alex Dallas, on loan from Zukunft. Bikinis and trunks aren't mandatory, but i would personally feel a little let down if some of that gorgeous Ronster flesh wasn't on show.

Thursday 5 pm to 12 am, Soeder,  Geroldstrasse 17, 8005

Concert: That voodoo that you do so well

If you're craving a little side-helping of mystical psychedelic voodoo rock to go with your balmy summer nights, then heading to the lakeside summer-stage at Rote Fabrik this Friday should keep you more than satisfied. With a double-bill of rocking-thrills, first on the line up is Xixa, a US duo made up of Brian Lopez and Gabriel Sullivan, who have had previous form with the bands Calexico and Giant Sand. Their new outfit creates a hypnotic groove combining African-influenced South American cumbian music with trippy desert-rock. Second on the bill is Fai Baba who, despite his name, comes from Switzerland, and plays a kind of spiritual blues with a voice that's as haunting and seductive as a Siren's call.

Friday 7.30 pm, Summer Stage, Rote Fabrik

Event: Sound of silence

Hearing is not the same as listening. And being a feminist is not the same as being female. Both of these ideas, and more, are explored in the 3-day gathering, Speaks with Silence, centred around OOR Saloon, over the weekend. The planned events hope to explore, disrupt and redefine male/female hierarchy and empower those changes. Friday evening has a workshop focused on listening, followed by a sound performance from Mirjam Bürgin. Saturday afternoon has a reading of James Baldwin's essay ' Stranger in the Village', followed by a dj set from DJ Haram taking place at Letzibad. While Saturday evening you get to actually sleep-over at OOR Saloon listening to 'Psalms selected by an Insomniac', and have some bedtime sweets. On Sunday you can follow in the footsteps of James Baldwin, with a walk toward Leukerbad, and in the evening see a performance of  Touching Tones with Tender Buttons. The whole weekend is finished of with party sets from dj's Idi Amal Dada, Barby Asante, Boris Becker and Scarlett. Registration is required for all events except Sunday evening (E-mail: [email protected] ) And, as usual, although this event has feminist themes, is open to all.

Friday to Sunday, various times, OOR Saloon and Letzibad

Market: Circus space

During the Winter months Zirkus Chnopf hibernates at Koch-Areal, but during the Summer season, when the circus is out travelling around Switzerland, this space is left vacant. So to fill the area with life, and a similar fairground spirit to the absent circus, this weekend the Koch Markt is taking place. The market itself will have a mixture of craft, designer and flea stalls, as well as a selection of culinary delights and drink stands but will also be sprinkled with the circus spirit as street performers, a theatre show, acrobats and live music will be on hand to entertain you throughout the day.

Saturday 11 am to 8 pm, Koch Areal,  Flurstrasse 85, 8047

Concert: Smoke signals

We all know that having your heart broken is devastating and painful, and yet listening to songs written about heartbreak can be as romantic and healing as love itself. That's why the Brooklyn-based band, Cigarettes After Sex, are worth listening to if you need to feel the soft embrace that only gentle ambient pop music can give you. Their songs drift and float by on a cloud of warm melancholy and make you feel that, even in the darkest night, the sun will rise again. This isn't a band just for the post-coital smokers out there but also for the wild, the innocent and the romantic of heart. They play at Exil on Tuesday evening and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.

Tuesday 7 pm, Exil

Eating: Where the world meets

Are you staying in Zurich for the summer? Good for you and Zurich returns this kindness by bringing the world to you at Güter Garten. What looks like a circus venue at first glimpse is actually a drawn out food festival. In August the venue turns into a beer garden with barbecue, lots of events as well as an open kitchen where you can cook with friends. Open daily from 5 pm. In September it makes space once more for a street food festival - the final one for 2016 – from 8th to 18th September.
Until 31st July: Monday to Friday 5 pm to 12 am, Saturday 11 am to 12 am, Sunday 11 am to 8 pm, August: daily from 5 pm

Good to know: No time for summer break

While summer is in full swing even the hardest clubers deserve a break and some sunshine on their pale faces. However this year most clubs seem to forgo their usual summer breaks or cut their time-out short. Maybe you're all secretly doing the rain dance at the weekends to make sure they re-open early? Either way, we're glad that Frieda, Zukunft and Exil are already back. Moods, Alte Kaserne and Kauz will remain closed a little bit longer.

Shopping tip: What Juan and Anna do when it's raining

Anna & Juan, what sounds like a start of a modern Romeo & Juliet release is the name of a store where you find everything your textile heart desires. For a summer pop up, Juan the Ally meets up with Josefina Eliggi and Luzius Schnellmann. Have a look at their summer bags or find some plant dyed wool. And if you don't know how to spend another rainy day inside – I promise, I stop with all the weather references shortly – they also offer knitting, crochet, embroidery as well as dyeing courses. If Gwyneth does it, you might want to give it a try too.
Anna & Juan, Sihlfeldstrasse 93, 8004. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 12 pm to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 5 pm
