Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 17.3.2016: Life's great adventure, wheels on fire & pop up everywhere

Dear Ronster

Summer may seem a long way off but I promise you it’s coming. And, just as wonderfully, with the summer sun comes my Rooftop Day. This year it will be on Saturday, 11th June, and whether it’s brunch, yoga, bbq, sunbathing, exhibition, concert or party – let’s celebrate summer together on the rooftops of the city. To help make Rooftop Day a success I’m going to need you and your amazing roof terraces to join in. If you want to become a star in the Ron universe then please download the registration form here and let me know what you're planning. If you want to get in the mood, then watch the video from last year's Rooftop Day to get those summer feelings flowing.
Give my love to the city, Ron

If you’re a fan of the visual arts then prepare to have your weekend dramatically improved. Grafik 16 has rolled into town at Maag Halle and will be showcasing the very best of Swiss and international graphic designers, illustrators, typographers, visual designers, game designers and artists. The works on display run the gamut from classic graphic design and street art to the latest in digital 3D-animation and web design. If you want to give your eyes a treat, then I have 10 x 2 tickets to give away for the pre-opening night party tonight (Thursday). E-mail me.
Thursday 6 pm, Opening Party - Friday to Sunday 11 am to 8 pm, Exhibition, Maag Halle

When worlds collide → Parties

Mark the date in your diary: Saturday, 19th March. It's when two of mankind's greatest achievements will collide - burgers and hip-hop. Five representatives of the Swiss street food/burger fraternity will be battling it out in Exil for the chance to be crowned King Burger 2016.  Included in the line-up are hometown heroes Palestine Grill, Brooklyn Kitchen (Geneva), Kitchenette Food Truck (Baden), The Lunchbox (Bern) and Mrs Burger (Basel). The dj line-up should also make your mouth water with such hip-hop luminaries as Stimulus & Boogie Dan, HYKAY and DJ Acee providing the beats for your burger bites.
Saturday 3 pm, Exil

Really old & wheely new → Market/Fair

I often find that my old bike is starting to show its age by the end of winter. All those cold nights and wet days are just too much for my faithful metal steed, and it may be time to finally put her out to pasture. If you’re in the same sad situation and are looking for a replacement, then this Saturday will be like a bicycle speed-dating day. There are two bike markets open where you can peruse and choose your next two-wheeled transport. The first is the Veloversteigerung (Bike Auction) near Limmatplatz and has bikes that have been found owner-less around the city, then given a little TLC and will be auctioned off. The second is the Velobörsen at Helvetiaplatz, which has a mixture of new and second-hand bikes for sale. Both of these events are repeated throughout the year, but this will be your first opportunity to go this year.
Saturday 1 pm to 4.30 pm (Veloversteigerung), Evang.-Ref. Kirchgemeindehaus Industriequartier, Hans Bader Saal, Limmatstrasse 114, 8005
Saturday 9 am to 3 pm, Helvetiaplatz, 8004

Life’s great adventure → Film events

Every year the best adventure documentaries and outdoor sports films from around the world are shown at the Mountain Film Festival in Banff, Canada and, in a ‘real-life-imitating-art’ type of way, the best of these films are then sent off together on an adventurous world tour. They’ll be arriving in Zurich at the Volkshaus on Sunday where you can see these amazing short films and get to feel a combination of inspired and a little inadequate at your own heroic feats.
Sunday 8 pm, Volkshaus

Loop the loop → Live (concerts)

Lùisa is a singer-songwriter from Hamburg who has embraced the 21st Century version of the acoustic troubadour. Her music combines elements of folk, pop and electronica, and when she tours she brings along the standard acoustic guitar but also a digital Loop-Station that allows her to build layers of effects, echoes and beats to accompany herself. She’ll be playing her first Swiss headlining show at Amboss Rampe on Sunday and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Sunday 7 pm, Amboss Rampe

Tour: Foody Friday

I heard some rumours that the Swiss are a reserved bunch of people. Especially in Zurich it’s allegedly difficult to hunt down locals when you’re new in town. On the Zurich Food Tour you can find out how they tick and observe them in their natural habitats at their preferred watering holes. It’s actually a rather fancy version of a pub crawl – with food – where you visit the some of the cool restaurants and bars in Zurich-West. It takes place every Friday in English and German and also provides some interesting facts about Zurich’s so-called «gastronomic revolution» or how the Zurich-West quarter came into being. Just book a place on their website. Price: 85 francs

Every Friday 4pm – 7 pm, Meeting point: Markthalle im Viadukt

Good to know: Sharing is caring

I’m sure you know the feeling: You should print out a document, but your printer just went on strike. Or you could work from home for a day – but your own four walls don’t tempt you at all. Or you’re in a different city and should work for a couple of hours. But where to go? If any of these scenarios sound familiar you should bookmark the new website PopupOffice. With it you can locate the nearest urban workstation to you and book it from one hour to days. You will always find Wifi, plugs, coffee and something to write on.

Eating: New Helvetia

I've told you before how great John Baker is in using only regional, eco-friendly and organic products, that the goddess Demeter herself harvests their wheat, and that their pigs voluntarily run to the butcher to be in your sandwiches. They really are that good, i promise. Their bread tastes great and John Baker just opened a new shop at Helvetiaplatz that’s also open on Sunday. It’s combined with a new restaurant called Bank that just opened recently too.
Molkenstrasse 15, 8004. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 7 am to 7 pm, Saturday 8 am to 4 pm , Sunday 8 to 2 pm

Shopping tip: More that pops up

Tuesday is the new Thursday for a party and this Tuesday, 12 selected labels from Zurich and surroundings open their first joint pop-up-store at Europaallee: Pop-up-allee. From 5 pm they hope to celebrate their new shop with you with some appetizers, drinks and tunes.
Tuesday 5 pm, Europaallee 11
