Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 10.3.2016: Clash of clans, the final frontier & fair salaries

For public broadcast → Live (concerts)

When Public Service Broadcasting released their first album a couple of years ago, you could have be forgiven for thinking they were a bit of a novelty act, plus the musician's names, J Willgoose Esq. and Wrigglesworth, didn’t help matters. Mixing electronica, rock guitars and samples of vintage public information films and radio broadcasts shouldn’t have worked, but it did - wonderfully. Their next album looked at the Space Race of the 50’s and 60’s, using archival newsreels and actual broadcasts from the Apollo space missions, and it was even better than their first. Now that no one’s laughing anymore, they’ll be playing live at Exil on Thursday.
Thursday 7.30 pm, Exil

Clash of clans → Parties

There can be only one, and the battle of the year to decide who reigns supreme takes place at La Catrina on Saturday. Yes, DJ Clash 2016 is set to commence as four teams of djs/non-djs gather to fight for death or glory. The teams this year are from Enfant Terrible, Stall 6, Vagabundo and, last year’s champions, Pomp It Up. The rules are simple: Each team alternates playing a track, for every drink you buy at the bar you’ll get a ball, give that ball to the team that’s rocking your world and, as with many aspects of life, the team with the most balls wins a trophy.
Saturday 10.30 pm, La Catrina

Private places → Live (concerts)

Just like Superman, bands have dual identities. By night they are sky-flying, stage-diving superheroes of sound, but by day they are mild-mannered musicians, dreaming and practicing in rooms around the city. This weekend you get a rare chance to peek behind the curtain, as 36 Zurich bands open up their band rooms for small and intimate concerts for the Soundabout festival. The rooms are dotted around town and include rehearsal spaces, band rooms and even an apartment living room. The program is extremely eclectic with everything from mystic pop to psychedelic soul. Exil will be acting as a hotspot and meeting place throughout the festival and has it’s own Soundabout party on Saturday evening with four acts playing live. All non-Exil concerts are free/collection.
Friday to Sunday, Soundabout Festival, various times and locations
Saturday 9 pm, Soundabout Party, Exil

Phone home → Lectures/information talks

There are many big questions in life that seem to demand an answer. Are we alone in the Universe? What is true happiness? Why don’t we call moustaches ‘mouthbrows’? The latter two I shall leave you to ponder at your own pace but the first could be answered by Ben Moore, professor of astrophysics at the University of Zurich, in his lecture Outer Space, which examines the search and possibility of life on other planets. Professor Moore is one of the modern breed of scientists, similar to Neil deGrasse Tyson or Brian Cox, that realise to engage the public you have to touch their imaginations as well as their reason. In English and free to attend.
Wednesday 8 pm, Universität Zürich, Campus Irchel

Time is on your side → Events (various)

Zurich Moves! is the annual citywide festival that celebrates all things contemporary in the performing arts and dance, and this year, if you want to be entertained, they’re going to make you work for it. The theme of this year’s festival is Time, and each of the performances will be going on for an extended period. This might include ‘ La Substance – but in English’, a four-and-a-half hour performance by 8 dancers, a singer and group of performers or ‘ Babyhay’, a twenty-four hour performance set inside an installation machine, or even ‘Zombies’, an overnight performance for which you’ll need to bring your sleeping bag. You won’t be tied to your seat for any of the performances in the festival, so whether you want to stay for it all or sneak out the backdoor, you’ll be free to choose.

Good to know: It's a women's world

On Tuesday I noticed these stickers at the tram ticket machines stating: «From 8th May, International Women’s Day, men will have to pay 20% more for their tickets, as they earn 20% more on average». Quite surprised that ZVV takes a political stand, I checked the website listed and found out that a feminist action group gets credit for this funny reminder. Of course it’s not real but if you feel – men or women – that your salary is unfair in comparison to your co-workers, talk to your boss and check the Swiss salary calculator to see what’s considered a fair salary for your field.

Shopping tip: Where design follows design

Self-made, creative and local: At the design market at X-tra you’ll find unique fashion, accessories, furniture and as much design as you can take. Maybe even more. If it’s another rainy Sunday, get some bread at John Baker Helvetia (new branch at Helvetiaplatz that’s open on Sunday), enjoy a lazy brunch and get ready for some shopping. Entry: 12 francs
Sunday, 12 pm to 7 pm, X-tra

The Zurich Art Space Guide aims to make the independent local art scene more visible by listing the different projects currently taking place in the city: Indoor exhibitions as well as windows and outdoor displays. The launch of the guide takes place at Réunion this Saturday but of course it will always keep you up to date afterwards.
