Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 11.2.2016: Birthday buzz, digital museum & the most wonderful days

Zurich Photo Trip → City Talk

Something old, something new → Live (concerts)

Romare is a London-based electronic music producer who took his name from Romare Bearden, the 1920's Harlem Renaissance painter who used a collage style to depict African-American life. The similarities don’t just end at the name; Romare uses sonic collages when creating his music, taking samples from decades worth of pre-rock'n'roll African-American music, adding trip-hop electronica and morphing it into something entirely ancient, and yet entirely modern. He’ll be playing live at Stall 6 on Friday.
Friday 10 pm, Stall 6

Birthday buzz

Just like the humble bumblebee, the Hive club has been bringing colour, life and a satisfying buzz to Zurich for the past decade, and this weekend they’ll be celebrating their 10th birthday in style with live acts and djs who’ve been part of the Hive story throughout the years. Friday sees Her Voice Over Boys playing live with dj sets by Sascha Braemer and the WhoMadeWho dj team. Saturday has Skinnerbox playing live, followed by more djs than seems physically possible in a club this size. Sunday finishes up with a live performance by Fritz Kalkbrenner, and djs Einzig & Faerber, Kyrill & Redford, Mismo & Sche Sche.
Friday 11 pm to 7 am, Saturday 11 pm to 8 pm, Sunday 8 pm to 4 am, Hive

School of dance → Stage

I know you feel proud of yourself when you do that funky little wiggle you invented one night out on the dance floor but, lets be honest, you may be able to dance but you ain’t no dancer. If you want to see the real thing, or at least the real thing in training, then Theater der Künste will be putting on a performance of 1st and 3rd semester students taking the Bachelor of Arts Contemporary Dance course at ZHdK (Zurich’s School of the Arts). You can expect innovative, modern and classical dance elements to be combined in a show featuring, quite literally, the future of dance. Entry is free, although you will need to reserve your place.
Friday and Saturday 8 pm, Theater der Künste, Bühne A

Digital museum → Vernissages & exhibitions

Artists who express themselves through virtual and digital media are part of the modern landscape now. A computer screen and software are as ubiquitous as the canvas and brushes of old. And while galleries and museums will have shows temporarily exhibiting these works, they have very few permanent spaces in which to gather. Until now. The Museum of Digital Art (MuDA) will be Europe’s first physical and virtual museum dedicated to the digital arts, and will open it’s doors for the first time on Saturday. The museum plans to show interactive installations and physical productions as well as works existing only in the virtual realms. They've also managed to get hold of one side of the huge train departure board that was at Hauptbahnhof and artistically ‘reprogrammed’ it. The first main exhibition is dedicated to the Swiss artist duo Gysin-Vanetti.
Saturday (Opening Day) 10 am to 10 pm, Museum of Digital Art, Pfingstweidstrasse 101, 8005

Blue lagoon → Live (concerts)

It is said that the meek shall inherit the earth, but what isn’t mentioned so much is that they will also write songs that sound like anthems for the broken-hearted. Youth Lagoon, essentially singer and main songwriter Trevor Powers with friends, have managed to pull off this tricky balancing act by combining his tremulous and fragile falsetto voice with music that gently and powerfully surges beneath it, letting you know that everything is going to be alright. They’ll be playing their neo-psychedelic pop at Mascotte on Tuesday evening.
Tuesday 7.30 pm, Mascotte

Good to know: The most wonderful days

Fasnacht, whose origins are deeply rooted in local tradition, does not give visitors much of an opportunity for active participation in the proceedings. But of course you can always dress up and join the party. Lucerne already made the start and on Monday the «most wonderful three days» begin in Basel, starting with Morgestraich at exactly 4 am on Monday morning and continuing until exactly 4 am on Thursday morning. If you don’t want to get up that early but like the idea: Join the carnival in Zurich which will be celebrated from 11th to 15th February on Münsterplatz – before its proper reopening in June.

Eating: Burritos filled with taste

«Sorry, we’re sold out». I was too late. Again. But I won’t give up. I heard too many good rumours about Peddler and I want to try one of his juicy burritos for myself. The former kindergarten teacher took over the kiosk venue at Kalkbreitestrasse/Seebahnstrasse and sells muesli and croissants in the mornings and burritos, salads and sandwiches for lunch. They’re filled with taste and the ingredients change daily, always vegetarian.
Peddler, Kalkbreitestrasse 33, 8003 Zürich. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 7 am to 1.30 pm

Shopping tip: New openings

Rost&Gold goes west: For three weeks, the shop pops up at Kulturpark Zürich starting this Thursday. Check out their carefully selected range of furniture and lamps and also don’t forget to get a glimpse of the new Kulturpark. Join them for a drink or two from 6 pm at Schiffbaustrasse 9d. Fashion city: If you prefer fashion to furniture, Teserkov opens a store this Thursday at Storchengasse 21, 8001. In their words it’s a store for individualists looking for something rare and incomparable.

Ron’s video gem: Where colour comes from

Did you ever wonder, where the world gets its colours? Designers and artists all over the world use Pantone’s colour guides to make sure their blue is actually blue. In this video, Quartz talks to the workers at Pantone’s factory headquarters in Carlstadt, New Jersey. One quality sets these workers apart: They have almost perfect colour perception.

The Baroness has a few things to say about St. Valentine's Day

Hello darlings,

I know. I’m late. I know it’s only a few days until the 14th of February. Valentine’s Day. That day when one is supposed to show the one one loves how much one loves them. Or something like that. Flowers. Candy. Cards. Dinner. Lingerie. You get the picture.

I want to emphasize this: Buying your love a dozen, long-stemmed red roses and taking her out to dinner on Sunday night is the most unoriginal and yawn-inspiring thing ever.* Not to seem ungrateful, but really. You can do better. You will do better...
