As opposed to the more traditional Tonhalle, the TonhalleLATE brand lures in a more progressive crowd with the attraction of opposites: classical and electronic music. Lionel Bringuier, conducting the renowned Tonhalle Orchestra, classically leads the event, while a live set from Detroit techno pioneers Octave One and a dj set from Mirco Caruso handles the electronic side. With dance floor, chill-out zone and bar all melding with the classical elements, this is culture clash at its very best.
Friday 10 pm, Tonhalle

Stage: Dancing in the main → Stage

To call US choreographer Meg Stuart’s new show, ‘Sketches/Notebook’, a dance performance would be like calling Disney World a fun fair – sure there are rides, but look at all the mouse related fun you’re missing out on. So, Sketches/Notebook has dancers, and fine ones at that, but also sharing the stage are musicians and performance artists, all costumed in the most fanciful way, and together they chaotically combine to create a succession of scenes and performaces that flash across the eyes, as if you were flicking through a giant, animated sketchbook.
Friday & Saturday 8 pm, Sunday 6 pm, Gessnerallee

Shopping tip: More merry markets → Market/Fair

I told you last week about all of the Christmas markets that were happening around town just in case you had an alternative-shopping itch you wanted to scratch. Well, dear scratcher, I misled you. It wasn’t all the markets in town; I missed a couple. So that we can regain our trust, and I can look myself in the eyes again, here are the ones I missed: Scandinavian Christmas Market at Brødre – lots of Scandinavian goodies and gifts. You can also try Glögg, which according to them is a happier, spicier version of Glühwein. Courtyard Karlsson Christmas Markt – Dotti’s Vintage and friends will be offering everything from 3D printed jewellery to South African homeware. Handmade Designmarkt – this one may, or may not be happening. I’ve heard rumours, and they have a Facebook presence but no location is published. So if you’re in the mood for some handmade gifts, keep an eye on their page. That should be all of them finally, and now I can finally get a good night’s sleep.
Scandinavian Christmas Market – Friday 5 pm to 10 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, Brödre, Geroldstrasse 31, 8005
Courtyard Karlsson Christmas Markt – Saturday 12 pm to 6 pm, Sunday 12 pm to 5 pm, Josefstrasse 142-144, 8005
Handmade Designmarkt – Sunday 12 pm to 7 pm, location unknown

Exhibition: Art with heart → Vernissages & exhibitions

Art with Heart is more than just a good rhyming scheme for the name of the exhibition this weekend at the urban-art gallery, Starkart. Twenty-five of Zurich’s best urban and street artists will be showing and selling their work’s at the exhibition, which covers the ‘art’ part of the name. The rest of the name is clear when you know that the proceeds and earnings of the artists will be going to two Swiss organisations helping with the refugee crisis - schwizerchrüz.ch and Tsüri hilft. And while you’re getting your art-on with your heart-on, they’ll also have a bar with music and some Indian street-food for you to enjoy.
Saturday 6 pm to 12 am, Starkart, Brauerstrasse 126, 8004

Concert: Robot love → Live (concerts)

They’ve tried it previously with the New York sleaze of the Velvet Underground, but next Wednesday Zukunft will be turning to the Teutonic elegance of Kraftwerk for their Cover Night special. A collection of the best live acts within the local indie and electronic scenes will be paying homage to Kraftwerk with an evening of cover songs interpreted in their own unique ways, from guitar based throbbing to electronica to gentle folk strumming.
Wednesday 8.30 pm, Zukunft

Eating: Coming back soon

The name doesn’t seem to fit with the food but I’m very happy that Coming Soon isn't, in fact, coming soon but is already here. From soups to curries, my plan is to try every dish on the menu of this new Vietnamese restaurant. In contrast to many other Asian venues, all meat carries the Demeter label. So: food is good, atmosphere is good, interior is good – I think I’ll be coming back to Coming Soon.
Coming Soon, Rolandstrasse 9, 8004. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to midnight, Saturday 5 pm to midnight

Shopping tip: Christmas Edition

Not in the mood for long queues, hysteric sales personnel and moody shoppers? At do it or buy it you can create your own Christmas presents with the help of DIY professionals. It’s like a chill-out zone during the pre-festive craziness. And if crafting is really not your thing, you can buy something that’s produced locally. Either way, the pop up shop in Kreis 6 remains open until the 24th of December.
Do it or buy it, Rotbuchstrasse 16, 8006. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 6.30 pm, Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, Sunday 813.12) 12 pm to 5 pm

Web tip: Across Time and Space

Radiooooo is a brand new site: Click on a decade and on a country and the site serves you a popular song from that time and place. If you click on 1960 and Brazil you might get bossa nova; if you click on Now and Canada, you might get Arcade Fire. Or Justin Bieber. It’s a work in progress and who knows, maybe one of you knows a song for a current hit for Switzerland.
