Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 22.10.2015: Brainfreeze, titter tour & reading city

Dear friends

I know it's been in the air for some time now but this weekend it becomes official. Sunday is the end of summer. Long live winter. Don't forget to set  your clocks back by one hour overnight from Saturday to Sunday. I wish you a wonderful, long weekend.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Reading: Favourite books

There's nothing better than curling up and reading a favourite book, unless someone wants to read it to you, of course. Starting today, the international literary festival «Zürich liest'15» (Reading Zurich) is taking place. More than 200 writers from Switzerland, Europe and overseas will be reading in Zurich and Winterthur. If you listen closely you may be able to hear the murmur hanging over the towns. This year, there is just one event in English: The poet duo Ilija Trojanow & Lila Azam Zanganeh at theatre Neumarkt this Friday at 5.30 pm.
Zurich liest ’15, Thursday to Sunday, all over town

Exhibition: Brainfreeze

I’m a huge fan of the Lowbrow and Pop Surrealist art movements, and The Trace Gallery on Militärstrasse is one of the few places in town that specialise in this type of outsider art. On Thursday evening is the opening party for a new exhibition called Brainfreeze from Canadian-born/Zurich-based artist Cee. The exhibition will show fantastical cityscapes, sassy lone figures and dense, decorative scenes that have been drawn by hand but also produced using the latest digital software. He’s even managed to get himself a 3D printer, which he’s hacked to his own creative ends.
Thursday 6 pm (Opening Party), Thursday to 19th November (Exhibition), Wed-Fri 2 pm-6 pm, Sat 11 am – 5 pm, The Trace Gallery, Militärstrasse 76 8004

Festival: Mountain music

The Zermatt Unplugged Festival is unique in Europe. A place where musicians come to play intimate acoustic sets in the shadow of the Matterhorn, but there’s one problem – it’s in Zermatt and, as you know, my heart already belongs to one Z city in Switzerland. As if in answer to my alpha-phobic weirdness they’re moving the festival to Kaufleuten over the weekend. As well as some fine live headliners including The Verve’s Richard Ashcroft, Band of Horses and Cat Power, they have 3 ‘New Talent’ stages of, well, new talent to showcase. After midnight the clubroom will open with some great international dj’s including Boy George.
Thursday to Saturday 6 pm to 4 am, Kaufleuten

Party: Jungle club

Jungle originally came to prominence a couple of years ago in a shroud of mystery. The UK duo, known only as J and T, would perform live at London's underground venues deep in shadow with their increasingly viral video's featuring troops of breakdancers or synchronised roller-skaters rather than the band themselves. This was never going to last of course, and although Jungle's cover is now blown, it's the music that really matters. They played their first live show in Zurich last year but on Friday you get a chance to hear where their neo-soul, nu-disco and indie-pop influences came from as this increasingly popular band play their first Swiss dj set in Exil.
Friday 11 pm, Exil

Comedy: Titter tour

The International Comedy Club is still in the habit of trawling through UK comedy clubs and luring unsuspecting comedians to Switzerland, possibly with promises of endless fondue and their own weight in chocolate. This Friday sees two of the best take to the stage at Mascotte. Marlon Davis is an award winning comedian who is extremely likable and one of the best storytelling jokesters working the clubs, whilst Suzi Ruffell is almost the exact opposite, in that she brings a certain cutting, sarcastic self depreciation to her act, similar to a Joan Rivers. Catch them both before they disappear back home with cheesy grins and suitcases stuffed full of chocolate.
Friday 8 pm, Mascotte

Stage: Bad book?

Which German leader’s debut book originally sold millions, was subsequently banned in many countries and, by the end of 2015, will be free of copyright restrictions and able to be reprinted by anyone? It is, of course, a certain Mr Hitler and his ‘Mein Kampf’ diatribe. The ongoing fascination with this forbidden book and its potentially impending new lease of life are explored by German theatre group Rimini Protokoll in their new play, Adolf Hitler: Mein Kampf, Vol. 1 & 2 at Gessnerallee. What lies at the root of the book’s myth? What does it actually say, anyway? Is it dangerous? - are all questions that the production tries to answer. The play is performed in German but with English subtitles.
Saturday 8 pm and Sunday 6 pm, Gessnerallee

Festival: Jazz & no jazz

Jazznojazz is the 4-day international music festival that comes to town each year, taking over Gessnerallee and Theater der Künste, and despite its jazzy name, it isn't all about the jazz. In fact the name is quite accurate if you read it directly - they have bands playing jazz but they also have bands playing no jazz (easy really). This year’s line up covers soul, funk, dance, fusion and, of course, jazz and includes Nina Simone’s daughter, Lisa Simone; a live and electronic recreation of the psychedelic soundscapes of Dark Side of the Moon by guitarist Nguyên Lê; and the original funkateers Fred Wesley & The New JB’s.
Wednesday to Saturday various times, Gessnerallee and Theater der Künste

Good to know: Metzgete

The Swiss seem obsessed with sausages during the autumn, when you'll find the podgy delicacies on almost every restaurant menu. A traditional Swiss sausage platter is called a «Metzgete» in the German region, reflecting the seasonal custom of butchering non-essential animals before winter sets in. Animal parts which couldn't be conserved with salt or smoke had to be used immediately and were often turned into blood and liver sausages. Nowadays, fresh sausages (without chemical additives) are still enjoyed. Boiled in water, they're typically served with sweet apple slices and sauerkraut on the side. And here my three favourite places to enjoy a Metzgete. Les Halles: 13 November, Ziegelhütte: 31 October to 15 November, Caduff's Wine Loft: 3-7 November. Make sure you book ahead!

Shopping tip: How to become a Zurich VIP

Would you like to buy Langstrasse or Gessnerallee? How about a boutique hotel in Kreis 7 or would you prefer to own the Uetlibergbahn? Of course I’m talking about Monopoly. There is a new Zurich edition available, perfect for the long winter-nights ahead.
