Concert: Twice as nice

It’s a dreamy double bill of dulcet tones at Papiersaal tonight as two alt-folk acts grace the stage. First up are Folly and the Hunter, a Montreal based band whose previous songs have had the ethereal quality of Sigur Rós but with their new album have added a certain clarity and urgency to their sound. Next is Ed Prosek, a Californian troubadour who is currently based in the seaside town of Brighton, UK. Despite having the trappings of a folk singer, he manages to incorporate pop, and even orchestral, elements into his songs. Both bands sound perfect for an early autumnal night and if you’re quick I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away for tonight’s show. Email me.
Thursday 8pm, Papiersaal

Stage: All things all at once

Just as its name suggests, The Wedding Party Massacre is a show that puts together ideas and images that sound like they really shouldn’t be combined. The performance itself explores the helplessness of the individual facing global armed clashes but it does this using rap, beats, guitar solos, wild dancers, video projections and flashing lights and sits somewhere in the sweet spot where pop concert, performance, dance and film meet. The show is currently touring Switzerland and stops in Zurich on Friday and Saturday at Gessnerallee.
Friday and Saturday 8 pm, Gessnerallee

Concert: Femme fatale

Imagine Iggy Pop in a dress. Actually don’t imagine it, I’ve found a photo for you here. You’re welcome. And now that we’re in the right frame of mind, let me introduce you to The Jackets. Imagine Iggy Pop attitude in a dress and you’re halfway there. This trio from Bern, fronted by Jackie Brutsche, take 50’s rock’n’roll, 60’s psychedelia and 70’s punk and smash them together to create the white heat of a live show that has them selling out concerts all across Europe. They’ll be playing at Stall 6 for the release of their new album, Shadows of Sound, on Friday night. Sorry about the Iggy pic, you’ll get over it.
Friday 9 pm, Stall 6

Project: Drink to the world’s health

Have you ever sat in a bar, with a couple of drinks nestling inside you, and talked about the world's problems and how they should be put right? Well, Amnesty International just called your bluff. They're organising Amnesty Afterwork in Bar Nocciolina on Monday evening, where you can have a drink, complain about the state of the world but crucially, and unlike your other nights out, be surrounded by like-minded people, who are happy to listen, and an organisation that will not only listen but empower you to really do something.
Monday 6 pm, Bar Nocciolina

Discussion: Writer in residence

Xiaolu Guo is a Chinese-born, London-based filmmaker and novelist whose prolific output has had her exploring themes of love, exile and cross-cultural differences since her debut in 1998. A lot of her novels and films have been either nominated for, or won, many prestigious awards including the Orange Prize for Fiction and the Golden Leopard, top prize at the Locarno Film Festival. Since June she has been Writer in Residence at Zurich’s Literaturhaus and will be discussing and answering questions about the interaction of cultures, through text and image, film and literature, using many filmic examples.
Tuesday 7.30 pm, Literaturhaus

Drinking: Definitely (probably) the best beer in the world

If you like craft beers, then you probably already know that Fork & Bottle have some of the best selections in town on their menu, but on Wednesday it looks like they’re upping their game. They’ll be hosting a dinner and beer tasting evening with Edge Brewery from Barcelona, officially voted The Best New Brewery in the World by Ratebeer.com. The evening includes a 5-course meal, meeting the brewers themselves and, of course, a hearty sampling of some award winning beers. I’d imagine places will sell out pretty quickly, so reserve your spot here.
Wednesday 7 pm, Fork & Bottle

Eating: American inspiration

Anthony and Jon opened their first b.good restaurant ten years ago, with the idea to bring food straight from the farm onto the fork. Finally, a decade later, their concept found its way from Boston to Zurich. At Langstrasse you'll find their fresh menus with home-made burgers, kale & super grain bowls, local salads and seasonal smoothies. My favourite? Their sweet potato fries. Such a b.good idea!
b.good, Langstrasse 211, 8005. Opening hours: Mon to Sat 10.30 am to 12 am, Sun 10.30 am to 9 pm

Good to know: Ron wants your photo

As you may have noticed, there is always a photo of Zurich featured at the top of my newsletter. Whether it's landscapes, buildings, streets, signs or people the photos all give a personal Ronster view of our city. So whether you are a professional or amateur, artist or snapper, send in your photos of Zurich to me using the 'upload' link on the website and i'll make sure the world sees it.

Shopping tip: Good food

If you asked Siri where to find an organic supermarket in Zurich, her answer would have been: There are none. Until now. Gaia is the first venue that unites all parts of biological and sustainable nutrition – and adds some pleasure to it. Here you’ll find seeds, glute-free flour, nuts and all other products for which you had to go round several shops beforehand. Only downside: it doesn’t leave many excuses for not eating healthy anymore.
Gaia Letzibach Hohlstrasse 484, 8048 Zürich-Altstetten. Opening hours: Mon to Fri 9 am to 7 pm, Sat 8 am to 6 pm

Ron’s video gem: Garden of Eden

Adam Purple, who died two weeks ago, was known as the «Godfather» of Urban Gardening. Harvey Wang and Amy Brost dedicated this short film to him and his work.
