Concert: Never avoid the voidz

You know when celebrities lose the plot a little bit? Britney with the hair, Charlie Sheen with his tiger blood? Well, Julian Casablancas, of The Strokes fame, seems to have his own answer to the age-old celeb flip-out, he’s got himself a new band called The Voidz. Rather than the 70’s New York cool of The Strokes, this time around he’s gone for a more Bladerunner dystopian chic, looking like heavy metal hippies, with music that sounds as if radio stations were being beamed in from every corner of the universe. Julian may have taken a turn for the weird but when was that ever a bad thing? He’ll be playing at Plaza tonight and I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Email me.

Thursday 8 pm, Plaza

Concert: Beatbox boogie

Flexible lips, a voice and guitar are everything Heymoonshaker need to create their unique sound. The two Londoners, Dave Crowe (a beatboxing marvel) and Andy Balcon (a smart blues guitarist with a voice like honeyed sandpaper) met busking and seem to explore, discover and invent music from every genre and era. Urban beats, deep bass, blues-rock rhythms and a serving of roots merge into their own style that may just need a new genre to describe it. They’ll be playing at Exil tonight. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Email me.

Thursday 8 pm, Exil

Open Air: Let the sunshine in

Festival fever is starting to heat up as the summer gets warmer and warmer and this weekend is an early chance to ease yourself into the sunny chaos with the Stolze Openair . It's Zurich's largest, free music festival but is within the city limits and is easy to get to with public transport. The line-up is a good mix of local and international bands including the acoustic pop of Raspberry Jamwood, the electro-dupstep of Skip&Die and the disco-punk of Pollyester. And, as the night darkens and local residents begin to complain about the noise, on Friday the music will move to Exil, where the after-party party continues.

Friday 5.45 pm and Saturday 1.15 pm, Stolze Openair

Friday 11 pm, Exil

Shopping tip: More to a market

If you’re looking for that little bit extra while you’re perusing your local flea markets, there are a couple happening this weekend that, will indeed, give you that little bit extra. Firstly, on Friday at Grubenstrasse 15, which is a new, temporary cultural complex, they are having a design and vintage market that sees some great local designers showing their wares, they’ll also have food, drinks and music on site to ease your shopping fatigue. Secondly, on Saturday at Noerd, they are having their Summerfest where, as well as the flea and design market, they’ll have streetfood stalls, a bar and music, an evening concert and after-market party that appears to have no end.

Friday 5 pm, Grubenstrasse 15, 8045

Saturday 12 pm, Noerd, Binzmühlestrasse 170, 8050

Exhibition: Colour me impressed

100 years ago French philanthropist Albert Kahn sent 20 photographers to every corner of the world to document the people, landscapes and monuments they found using a newfangled technique called colour photography. A selection of some of the best photos of this vast 72,000-slide archive is now being shown, for the first time in Switzerland, at the Museum Rietberg in the exhibition Welt in Farbe. There is a certain strange familiarity that comes with viewing colour photos of an age when all of our other experiences of it are in black and white. The people and places feel suddenly alive and modern despite being lost to time.

Sunday until 27 th September, Tues to Sun 10 am to 5 pm, Weds 10 am to 8 pm, Museum Rietberg

Food might be the love of my life. There is nothing better than
roaming the streets, discovering new restaurants and trying fresh
tastes. This hobby doesn’t come cheap when you live in Zurich, which
is why I’m glad I discovered
EasyDining. The app lists about 60
restaurants all over Switzerland (most of them in Zurich and Zug) where you get a discount as an EasyDining member when eating there for the
first time. Take your beloved along or a friend and your bill will be
reduced by 50 percent. A bargain, I wanted to share with you. So
Thomas from EasyDining offers the first 5 of you who subscribe a free
annual membership, and to all other Ronsters (who reacted too slowly)
a subscription for half the price (48 francs instead of 95). Just
register here, enter the voucher code ronorp and become a culinary
explorer.

Zurich sports 25 pool areas around town so I challenge you to try out every single one of them by the end of the summer. Send me pictures and I'll see what treat I can send your way in return. For a full list, check the city's website  where you can also order a season ticket. If the water is still too cold for your to jump into the river or the sea you can check the water temperatures daily on the website by the Canton Zurich . And friends, it's looking better every day. The water in the outdoor pools is heated so you can begin the summer splash there. The website wiewarm.ch also lists the temperatures of various pools around Switzerland.

There are magazines that are like art: inspired, high quality and you want to keep looking at them. Over six months Chöying, Laurin, Florian, Matteo, Matthieu & Rico collected the best examples the world has to offer and from Friday until the end of August you can browse, read and also buy your summer read in their pop-up store at Niederdorf. I didn’t have time to look through all of them, but I’m sure you’ll also find some English language treasure there.

DEAR BARONESS, I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT SAFE SEX . . .

Dear Baroness,

I have a question about safe sex. It’s important to me to be responsible and I am. Almost always. But I find that many men want to jump right in to my lady bits without a care or condom. There isn’t even a conversation. I know it’s a sweeping statement but I also find that the younger men I go out with seem to be better about using condoms or bringing it up than the older ones. I’m interested to hear your thoughts on the matter and any advice you could give about how to handle this delicate subject.
