Stage: Sabina Spielrein

Considering the life she led it’s amazing that Sabina Spielrein isn’t better known. She was a Russian doctor who became one the worlds first female psychoanalysts. After moving to Zurich she was, at first, a patient, then student, then colleague of Jung. She was also a friend of Freud, and her studies prefigured both Jung and Freud’s own ideas. Rumour has it she may also have relationships with both of them. The Nazi’s finally murdered her in 1942. Her life has now been adapted into a one-women show, Sabina Spielrein – A former patient of Carl Gustav Jung, at the Sogar Theater by award winning Swiss actress Graziella Rossi. Mississippi-born Saxophonist Harry White will play the score. English spoken.
Thursday 8.30 pm & Sunday 5 pm, Sogar Theater

Concert: On the road again

I liked Gars D’en Bas even before I’d heard their music, simply for the fact that these five guys travel around Europe, from Sweden to Turkey, in self-built wooden caravans. Their music also reflects their nomadic existence with a blend of latin, jazz, blues, and gypsy rhythms, and as you would expect from a band that is used to playing on the street as much as the stage, they know how to get a party started right. They’ll be playing in Kafi für Dich on Friday and entrance is free.
Friday 8.30 pm, Kafi für Dich

Exhibition: Street move
The Streetart.Limited Gallery had a temporary opening run toward the end of last year and, since moving to a new space in which to operate, will be opening their doors again this Saturday to show their collections of street and graffiti inspired art. The opening will coincide with a photographic exhibition by Gabriela Domeisen, Five Years on Road – Zurich, Berlin, London, for which she has photographed, and essentially archived, weird and wonderful streetart before the whim of some public servant bureaucrat whitewashes them away.
Saturday (Opening Day) 1 pm to 7 pm, Exhibition runs until 6th March

Project: I’m an open book

Have you ever wanted to ask someone why they do what they do? How the path of their life has led them to be doing a particular thing? Whether that’s a policeman, a sex worker or maybe even a migrant, I’m sure we all have the odd question we wouldn’t mind asking and everyone certainly has a story to share. Well, the Human Library at Café Zähringer allows you do this without getting yourself into any compromising positions. Rather than opening books to learn something new or hear a story, the Human Library lets you sit with people from different cultural and social backgrounds, although all are targets of prejudice, and lets you discuss, explore and understand their and, perhaps, your world a little better.
Sunday 8 pm, Café Zähringer

Concert: Saintly songs

Britpop may have died out sometime ago but it seems to be alive and kicking in Los Angeles band Saint Motel. They’ve got just the right blend of indie guitar grit and glam pomp to put them in the art school realm of Pulp, rather than the football terraces of Oasis, and yet despite all this they still have that West Coast sheen that makes their music as shiny as a Californian sunrise. They’ll be playing at Eldorado on Sunday night.
Sunday 8 pm, Eldorado

Eating: Hola! Gaucho!

It’s already been one year since my favourite cowboy opened his venue Gaucho. To celebrate this occasion he decided to open a second locale: Gaucho 2. The new restaurant is a cozy affair with 30 seats which you'll find at Nietengasse in Kreis 4. The menu is filled with Italian delicacies and of course their famous Argentinean beef. A gourmet trip to Buenos Aires, or heaven for meat lovers.
Restaurant Gaucho 2, Nietengasse 1, 8004. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday from 5 pm to 11 pm

Good to know: Zurich on foot

When Sunday lies ahead of me and the sun is shining I love to explore the city on foot. I avoid trams and buses and try to find new routes every time. Usually I let chance guide me but as I tend to end up more or less in the same area every time I downloaded the official «ZüriPlan App» this week. The map shows attractive and quick routes on foot and by bike around town, including 19 «Züri z'Fuess» tours: You choose a part of the city and let the walk guide you through history, sights and landmarks. It’s like a free local travel guide, ideal for walks on your own or when you have guests. It’s available for iphone and android, and the best of all - also in English.

Shopping tip: It's vintage, baby

Lately it feels like second-hand furniture shops (called «Brocki» or «Brockenhaus») are popping up everywhere. Places where - once in a while – you still find true bargains. I checked online to see if there is an overview for such shops. There isn’t. But what I found is the website «Nicht neu» by Aline Ozkan. Her obsession are «Brockis» and she is an expert in that field. She published several books, and her website provides a lot of information from stock on offer to opening hours and websites. You can also choose what you’re looking for (accessories, clothes etc.) or where you want to start your treasure hunt and a list of places pops up. Very handy.

Web tip: One of those days
GoPro films are the new slide shows. I had to suffer through hours of vacation snapshots projected on a screen in my youth. Nowadays everyone wants to share their adventures with a self-made film. If I have to watch one more friend show how he races down a hill, I might scream. But there is no rule without an exception. In «One of those days» Candide Thovex is having another one of those days in his home resort where he’s on the slope. The clip lasts a bit over 5 minutes but I could watch him for much longer. Without screaming.
