Concert: Animal magic

If you’re looking for a little soulful electronica but Alt-J can be a little too abrasive and Radiohead’s ‘In Rainbows’ seems like forever ago, then get yourself down to Exil this Friday where Glass Animals will be playing live. Mixing sparse sonic structures with glistening synths and come-hither vocals they manage to sound both crystalline and gooey at the same time. Their debut album came out in the UK earlier this year with whispers of ‘next-big-thing’ having been thrown at them.

Friday 7 pm, Exil

Party: Independent music

Motoguzzi is an independent Zurich-based record label for electronic dance music that has been around for nearly a decade now. They’ve recently worked with and recorded tracks with a couple of dj/producers from opposite ends of Europe. Dino Sabatini has been at the heart of the Italian techno scene for some time, while Tony Scott aka Edit Select has been based out of Glasgow, Scotland creating his groundbreaking music since the Nineties. This Friday at Zukunft, the Motoguzzi Release Night will be presenting these two djs as well as the hypnotic, shamanic music they’ve newly created.

Friday 12am, Zukunft

Shopping tip: Popping up

Like the last flower of summer before the first snows of winter, the pop-up store, ‘ Alles schöne Dinge’ (All Beautiful Things), is destined to bloom only for a little while but add a little joy to our lives while it does. In fact it’ll only be popping-up for one day, this Saturday at Cupcake Affair in the old town. As well as the obvious cupcakes, you’ll be able to check out a selection of handmade jewellery, fashion, shoes and accessories by designers from around Zurich.

Saturday 10 am to 8 pm, Cupcake Affair, Spitalgasse 10, 8001

Stage: Ghost story

It is rare that the words English and Opera are mentioned in the same sentence, rarer still that you could add the word ‘great’ before them but with Benjamin Britten’s Turn of the Screw, this is exactly what you have. Based on a Henry James novella, and composed by Britten in the mid 1950’s, it is a gothic ghost story with spine tinglingly sinister undertones about the nature of evil. It will be playing at the Opernhaus in English (with German subtitles) on Friday, plus a further three more performances.
Friday (14th) 7 pm, Sunday (16th) 8 pm, Wednesday (19th) 7 pm and Sunday (23rd) 8 pm, Opernhaus

Concert: From hang to sing

Nick Mulvey is an English musician who started out playing an odd Swiss percussive instrument called a Hang in a critically acclaimed jazz band. He then decided to go solo. While this may sound like the beginnings of a slightly esoteric solo career, what he created with his debut album instead is beautiful acoustic guitar music reminiscent of Jose Gonzalez or Damien Rice, with tender songwriting infused with the hypnotic rhythms of North Africa. He’ll play his only Swiss show at Komplex Klub on Wednesday.
Wednesday 8 pm, Komplex Klub

Shopping tip: Die Perlentaucher

Small is beautiful at this little shop at Idastrasse 28. The name Perlentaucher, which translates as Pearl Diver, is very apt as the hand-picked selection of gems on display can give a little extra dazzle to your home. Each piece has been selected with care and attention by the owners, who have created this store as a long held dream. Here you’ll find furniture, jewellery, fashion and living accessories, bags and wallets on sale. Also in the store are artunddeco.ch with Hera soaps made from organic, high quality ingredients. Web tip: Terms of Service

The news channel Al Jazeera America has on its website an online comic called Terms of Service, about the world of ‘Big Data’, a world in which we are forced to move, like fish in water, as users of services such as Google, Facebook, Twitter, etc. What questions should we ask ourselves before we disclose personal data? What compromises do we have to make to partake in the modern world? A fun, exciting and thought-provoking read.
