Game: King pong

There comes a time in all our lives when we realise that opportunity and destiny are the same thing. A moment that destroys your meaningless past and ushers in a glorious future. That moment arrives for you on Friday and Saturday with the Swiss Series of Beer Pong at X-tra. Teams of two will compete against each other in this ancient sport of kings, as they attempt to lob ping-pong balls across tables into plastic cups full of beer. The winners will gain entry to the World Series of Beer Pong taking place in Las Vegas and have a chance to be crowned rulers of the world. If you're quick it's still possible to register a team and it’s free entry for any spectators.
Friday and Saturday 6 pm, X-tra

Shopping tip: Designer hotel

When I stay in hotel rooms certain items often, accidently of course, find their way into my suitcase. A mini shampoo here, a pair of slippers there, even the odd bathrobe has occasionally returned with me to Chez Ron. However, at the Fashonhotel taking place in the 25Hours Hotel over the weekend, I’ll be able to legitimately leave a hotel with a bag full of great stuff. The whole place is being turned into a shopper’s paradise with pop-up stores of big brand as well as some great international and local fashion and streetwear designers taking over the lobby and hotel floors. To fully immerse yourself in the experience they’ll also have fashion shows, bars, lounges, dj’s and an after-party. Entry CHF 22
Friday 6 pm to 2 am, Saturday 11 am to 2 am, Sunday 11 am to 6 pm, 25Hours Hotel Zurich West

Eating: Food to go

Food-on-the-move usually means grabbing something greasy and warm to eat as you dash to that appointment you know you’ll probably be late for anyway.  Well, Rudi Rockt have a different idea. Along with a partner, you will cook one of a three-course meal in your kitchen, the guests will be four other people (two other teams) taking part. Once your course is cooked, served and surely admired, you and your partner move to another house and are served the course that is being cooked there. You will receive a personal route map, to make sure a) you know where you’re going, and b) to ensure you get a starter, main and dessert in the right order. All culinary skills are welcome and an after-party is being held in Damm für Dich for all participants to come together at the end of the evening. Registration closes on Friday at noon.
Saturday (1st course starts at 6 pm), After-party 11 pm, Damm für Dich

Party: Third room

Der Dritte Raum are one of Germany’s best underground electronic music duos. They’ve been around since forming at a techno party in the early Nineties and have consistently produced music that has been pushing at the edges of progressive, trance and minimal sounds. Unusually for dance music producers they also have the reputation as one the best live acts, always creating a hypnotically charged atmosphere in any room they play. This Saturday they’ll be at the Kinky Beats night in Amboss Rampe, alongside a collection of Zurich’s finest dj’s that should help scratch your electro itch for some time.
Saturday 11 pm, Amboss Rampe

Concert: Tabla treat

Mendi Mohinder Singh was born in the multi-cultural UK city of Birmingham and was exposed to a mixture of Indian and Western music from an early age. Since then he’s become a renowned musician and player of the Tabla, an Indian percussive instrument, for which he has recently composed the world’s first Tabla Concerto. On Sunday he’ll be in concert at Helsinki alongside Roger Odermatt, who’ll be playing Sitar, as they play improvised Indian folk music as well as rhythms influenced by jazz and samba.
Sunday 6.30 pm, Helsinki

Good to know: Exotic holidays

Autumn delights us with golden sunshine, but I’m sure that many of you are planning holidays far away where it’s hot and winter nowhere to be seen. Exotic places often require vaccinations and in Zurich, you generally have three options to get them. 1. GP: Your GP can vaccinate against most illnesses, except the rarer ones. 2. Tropen- und Reisemedizin at Bellevue: If you need consultation or special vaccinations, then the tropical and travel medical institute at Bellevue is the place to go. Book your appointments by phone. Fee has to be paid right at the practice. 3. The travel clinic: The travel clinic is part of the University of Zurich and you don’t require an appointment. Just head there during opening hours. It’s closed at weekends and on Tuesday.

Eating: Rude recipes

This week’s eating tip comes in form of a cook book/website. Thug Kitchen call themselves «the only website dedicated to verbally abusing you into a healthier diet». Soon, their book «Eat like you give a fuck» will be published and it also comes with direct instructions: «Add the quinoa and the water and bring it all to a boil (this won't take long because the water should already be hot as fuck). Go check your tumblr or Facebook shit while it cooks for about 20 minutes.» In their archive you find seasonal recipes and on YouTube the preview of their book.

Web tip: Lögreglan á höfuðborgarsvæðinu

I’m not sure what surprised me more: The fact that Reykjavik has a police force or that they (duteous as they are) have an Instagram Account. There you see police officers cuddling kittens, eating ice cream or feed ducks. Looks like a nice job…
