They will be presenting the best in local music and culture including various guests, dj sets and bands. Entry will be free before 11 pm. Exhibition: Cultural exchanges

The Museum Haus Konstruktiv has a couple of great exhibitions starting today that will be running until the new year. The first is a celebration of this year’s 150th anniversary of Swiss and Japanese diplomatic relations, as the exhibition Logical Emotion plays host to a collection of contemporary art from Japan. Curated by the directors of the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo the show will display a wide range of artistic media from painting and sculpture, photography, video to manga drawings. The second exhibition is by this year’s winner of the Zurich Art Prize, Haroon Mirza. This Anglo-Pakistani artist works experimentally with light and sound installations, incorporating outdated and modern technologies as well as reference to music and art history.
From Thursday until 11 January 2015, Museum Haus Konstruktiv

Party: Bands with beats

In what can only be described as a cross-cultural collision, a French electronic/indie music label with the Japanese name of Kitsuné, meaning fox, will be hosting three UK bands as they perform dj sets at Plaza. Foals, Friendly Fires and Citizens have pretty much established themselves over the last few years as indie bands who have been deeply influenced by club culture and so it should be interesting to hear what they’ve got in store for us on Friday night.
Friday 11 pm, Plaza

Concert: Rhythm king

If you’ve heard Fela Kuti or Afrobeat music before you’ll know that, as Gloria Estefan so eloquently put it, the rhythm is gonna get ya. And if you’re wondering where that rhythm originated, you need look no further than Tony Allen. He’s been described as the greatest drummer who has ever lived, and been involved with musicians and music from every kind of genre, with his most recent album being a collaboration with English musician Damon Albarn of Gorillaz and Blur fame. He’ll be playing with his band at Moods on Saturday night.
Saturday 8.30 pm, Moods

Concert: Young, gifted and back

There is something almost primeval about rock’n’roll’s cyclical desire to give birth to bands of young men who want to bash the drums and thrash their guitars in a melodic fashion. The latest incarnation of this eternal trend are Taymir, a band from the Netherlands who are made up of 16 to 22 year olds, and have recently won the ‘Sound of 2014’ back home. Their music has a 60’s jangle about it, melodies that will stick to you like glue and they’re all as bright as shiny new buttons. What’s not to like? They’ll be playing live at Hafenkneipe on Monday night.
Monday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Audiolicious: Jam it

With the opening of Toni-Areal, JazzBaragge found a new home. It's the meeting point for jam sessions of local, national and international jazz musicians. It’s always open to the public and as there is rarely anything else going on on a Wednesday, certainly worth a visit. There are three different acts lined up for October, so have a look which one suits you best. Entry 5 francs
Every Wednesday from 8 pm to 1.30 am, JazzBaragge @ Toni-Areal

Eating: Elisaburg is back

Last weekend, Sommergarten at Kanzlei held their final dinner for this summer. And as it’s officially autumn now, the team returns to their harbour at Elisaburg at Zweierstrasse (just behind Bahnhof Wiedikon). Though the venue may not seem like much from the outside, dare to step inside. There a cosy interior awaits you, including friendly staff and great Mediterranean cuisine: Always fresh and always good. If you can’t make up your mind what you should order, check with your waiter, they always offer good tips and the chef is always happy to fulfil special wishes.
Elisaburg, Elisabethenstrasse 3, 8004. Monday to Friday 11.30 am to 2 pm & from 7 pm, Saturdays from 6 pm

Good to know: Love is never illegal

And the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film goes to… Switzerland’s «The Circle»! Well, that’s just a fantasy so far, but the film (in German «Der Kreis») is nominated. I went to see it last Sunday at the new cinema Houdini and was enthralled. It’s a mixture of documentary and feature film, set in 1956, when Zurich was perceived as a pioneer in gay emancipation in the whole of Europe. It’s a moving piece about two men who fall in love while the repression against homosexuals become increasingly intense. I was never aware that Zurich played such a key role in Europe’s gay movement. Well, my tips are usually suggestions but it would be a shame if you missed this gem of Zurich’s cinematic talent. Especially as the film comes with English subtitles.

Shopping tip: Made to last

After more than one year filled with labour, the refurbishing of the Fabrikat shop finally finished and it's time for the opening. The venue is filled with unique hand-made, timeless objects to touch, admire and buy such as sketch books or pens. The bazar-like shop looks like it stranded here from a Jules-Verne-book: bizarre, fantastic, archaic, beautiful and brand new. The opening is today from 6 pm.
Fabrikat, Militärstrasse 76, 8004

Web tip: Every noise at once

If you’ve ever been in a conversation with someone about the music they like and they say something like, ‘I really like skweee but I’m more into shimmer pop this week’. You may feel a little out of your depth, musically speaking. You may also want to wrap your hands around their throat for being so pretentious. To solve the first issue, dear Ronster, check out this website – Every Noise At Once – that lists every possible genre of music, 1200 at the last count. Click on a genre and you'll see bands associated with it plus hear samples of the music. To solve the hand and throat issue, I have no real cure, although try listening to some shimmer pop. It may relax you a little.
