Cinema: Mission accomplished

Who can forget the halcyon days of George W Bush as US President? If you’ve managed to convince yourself they didn’t happen, or successfully medicated yourself into believing it was all just one long psychotropic daydream, Xenix would like to remind you. As part of their Will Farrell season, tonight (appropriately enough on 11th September) they are showing Farrell’s one-man Broadway show, «You’re Welcome America – A Final Night with George W Bush», filmed in 2009 as Farrell performed his uncanny parody of the great leader for the final time. Entry will be free.
Thursday 9.30 pm, Xenix

Party: Beat box

Summer may have come to a glorious and sudden end this week but Auntie Frieda has been thinking of ways to still keep you warm this weekend. On Friday night at Frieda’s Büxe, she’ll be playing host to Hertz, the electronic party night that has sunbeams hidden in its digital pulse. Midimal and Mindsufer will be playing live, while Pow-Low, Quinto Elemento, Crusty & Protone will be djing. Live visuals will be beamed into your brain by Neonspirit.
Friday 11 pm, Frieda’s Büxe

Party: Bye bye bastei

Nature may abhor a vacuum but Zurich abhors seven floors of empty space even more. As Photobastei closed its doors and packed away the photos at the end of August, the empty building was crying out for a meaning to its life. Well, this Saturday it’s found one. The last, great Photobastei rave. Seven floors of dj’s, music, bars and dancing. It may only be for one night but let’s give the old girl a send off she deserves.
Saturday 10 pm, Photobastei

Stage: Look into my eyes

What’s in my left trouser pocket? What three famous people am I thinking of? What colour is my underwear? If you can answer these three questions, there’s two possible explanations – one, you’ve been stalking me, and I want you to stop now, please, you’re scaring me or two, you’re Tobias Heinemann, the Zurich-based hypnotist, mentalist, magician and general reader of minds. He’s already appeared on his own show on Swiss TV and now, for the first time, is giving his first performance in English, Serendipity, at Plaza on Saturday. Now seriously, stop following me. And you should know by now that I don’t wear any underwear.
Saturday 3.30 pm, Plaza

Knowledge: Practical theory

Corner College is a great collaboration of people that I've mentioned a few times when one of their events has caught my eye. On their Theory Tuesday evenings they have different people lead discussions about a specific text or film and on their Practical Friday nights have someone lead an instructional workshop. Past evenings have included subjects as wide ranging as «A Viking Way of Knitting», «The Perverts Guide to Cinema» and, «How to Land a Plane». They have their planning session for the Autumn season on Tuesday and are looking for people who would like to hold a session on a subject of their own choosing. Courses are mostly, but not exclusively, held in English.
Tuesday 8 pm, Corner College, Kochstrasse 1, 8004

Concert: And the beat goes on

If you’re looking for some classic rock'n'roll with real heart and heartbreak – think Lou Reed without the drugs and black leather – you’ll be in for a treat if you venture down to Stall 6 on Tuesday night to see Ezra Furman and the Boyfriends. After five albums, last years «Day of the Dog» saw them finally getting some time in the sunshine of popular acclaim, and with a live show that’s equally chaotic, cathartic and cool they may need to wear those rocking Ray-Bans a little longer.
Tuesday 8 pm, Stall 6

Eating: Thank you for smoking

I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but it sounds amazing and as it’s only open this month here's my tip: «Wood Food». You'll find this hotspot for food prepared over an open fire near Schmiede Wiedikon throughout September. Stewed, smoked, grilled – whatever your palate desires accompanied by fine wines. The three young chefs behind «Wood Food» believe that food should be enjoyed in good company. Their ingredients are local and the long tables make sure you never eat alone. The «Smoking Pop-up Dinners» take place from Tuesday to Saturday and the menu costs 85 francs excluding drinks. Book a table here
Wood Food, Werdstrasse 128, Tuesday to Saturday from 6 pm during September

Good to know: Pieces of art

This week, my good to know concerns a tiny gem I stumbled upon by chance on Tuesday. Me and my two friends on our bikes. Abrupt stop by my friend in front of the retirement home Selnau at Schanzengraben.
Friend: Have you ever noticed the golden eye patches on these sculptures?
Ron: No, must be new!
Friend: The sculptures?
Ron: No, but the eye patches look new.
I’m glad we were overheard and interrupted. The sculptures «Lullaby» were placed around and within the retirement home in July and this Saturday there is a Vernissage with an open house. The intriguing pieces of art by Nicholas Micros are worth a visit themselves, but to be honest, I always fancied a look inside this house. After all, we’re not getting younger. If you don’t have time this weekend, you can also drop by during the week all day except during meal times.

Shopping tip: One's Own Room

I don’t have to mention anymore how much I like browsing in record shops. And I feel the same about book shops, especially when they also stock art books. Therefore I welcome OOR Records with open arms. The record and art book shop opened its doors this week and celebrates its start until Saturday at 5 pm with live sets, performances and drinks. Check out the program and if you’re like me, don’t forget to bring your big wallet along.
ORR Records, Anwandstrasse 30, 8004. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday from 120 pm to 7 pm, Saturday from 11 am to 5 pm

Web tip: Human or alien - that's the question

If puzzles or mystery are your thing, then you probably like this photo project. At the first glance, the images by Anelia Loubser seem like a series of some alien-like forms. But concentrate and at once your brain puts the pieces together and sees the human face. Which is just turned upside down.
