Concert: City in the summer

If the idea of venturing into a hot, dark gig to get your musical fix doesn’t appeal to you as summer shines on outside, then Stadtsommer is here to save the day, or rather your evening. Six bands, with styles ranging from folk to electronica, will be playing live over the next couple of weekends in cool outdoor locations around town, and all are free. Tonight, experimental rock band Gletscher plays outside Helsinki. I'm also looking forward to seeing musical futurist Bruno Spoerri and Crew play in the courtyard of Restaurant Riethalle and the folk of Mantel & Kantelinen at Platzspitz
Thursday 9 pm, Gletscher, outside Helsinki, Thur - Sat (24th-26th Jul & 31st Jul-1st Aug), various times & locations

Eating: Table tour

The Tour de France will be finishing this Sunday, and while riding 200km a day, often up and down mountains, clad in lycra is clearly some people’s idea of fun, I much prefer the Tour de France that Kulturmarkt are offering. This Friday you can take a culinary tour of various regions of France, with the chance to eat Forest Snails, Bouillabaisse, Coq au Bordeaux and Tarte Tatin. The only question will be, do you exert yourself with a bike ride to the French feast or take the tram. Either way, lycra will be optional. To reserve, you can email [email protected] or call 044 454 1015.
Friday 6.30pm, Kulturmarkt, CHF 35 per person

Party: Alt dj

A couple of years ago alt-J released their debut album, An Awesome Wave, which was full of folky electronica, dubstep rhythms, vocal harmonies and tunes that could get a festival field singing along. With their new album due for release soon, they’ve been invited to dj at the Mad Katz Sommerparty in Exil on Saturday night. If the mix of influences shown by the music they make is anything to go by (their new single samples Miley Cyrus), this should be an evening full of surprises.
Saturday 11 pm, Exil

Exhibition: Battle cry

During the Bosnian War, Sarajevo became a city under siege. In fact, the assault lasted from April 1992 until February 1996, the longest on any capital city in modern warfare. And yet despite the horrors taking place on the streets, below ground in the cellars and underground bars a resistance of sorts was taking place as bands and artists performed. In the exhibition called Rock ‘n’ War in Sarajevo - Rock gigs under the siege of Sarajevo at Photobastei, photographer Milomir Kovacevic Strasni will show his photos of this chaotic scene for the first time and be on site to discuss his experiences. The evening will finish with music from Balkanekspress.
Saturday 7 pm, Photobastei

Concert: California dreaming

If you could capture, in sound, the feeling of cruising along a deserted Californian highway in a white open-top Cadillac as the warm breeze blows back your hair and the sun glints off your Ray-Bans, then it would be something like listening to a Jonathan Wilson album. He’ll be bringing his soulful folk-rock grooving to Bogen F on Tuesday. If you end up running away from home to become a ‘child of the sun’ after the concert, don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Tuesday 9 pm, Bogen F

Eating: As hot as it gets

I love getting restaurant tips from you. Let’s see if you also get tempted: «At Thai Sun Garden you find the hostess herself in the kitchen, preparing a large selection of authentic, wonderful dishes at a reasonable price. The duck is tender, the veggies crunchy and the curry as hot as you like it. Every time it feels like visiting a neighbourly Thai couple for dinner. It’s a bit hidden but that adds even more to its charm.» You’ll find the venue right next to tram stop Tierspital (tram 7 or 9) exit Berninastrasse/ Winterthurerstrasse). Best to call ahead to make sure the restaurant is open.
Thai Sun Garden, Winterthurerstrasse 281, 8057 Zürich, 043 538 71 37

Good to know: 24/7 music

For the fifth time, the LoRa dj marathon takes place right before Streetparade. What's new: The quirky city radio leaves its home and wanders to various locations. The music will be as diverse as ever and also the locations couldn’t vary more: ABS, Hive, Gonzo, Daniel H., Helsinki, Blaues Haus, Klubi, Palestine Grill, Kern Bar, Nordbrücke, Zitrone, Stall 6 and of course Boschbar. It’s worth to catch a beat, even better, stop by. You’ll find the programme here.
Tonight from 10 pm at Blaues Haus until 4th August at various locations
24/7 on 97.5 MHz and www.lora.ch

Shopping tip: New design

Where there used to be a hat maker, a gallery and a piano store, the two sisters Jessica and Josie found new home for their label Kinsfolk. They use the beautiful location as a showroom and workshop for their jewellery and scarf collection. So far, they don’t have fixed opening hours but during regular working hours you’ll certainly find someone there who is happy that you came.
Kinsfolk Studio, Dubsstrasse 26, 8003 Zürich

Shopping tip: More than honey

Do you know Wabe 3? They sell tasty honey collected from the rooftops of Zurich. And on my Roof Terrace Day they offered guided tours to various hives. Together with Madame Pompon they recently opened a small shop called Honig Kuchen. Here you'll find, next to their own products, various British and American baking items and stylish accessories for your teatime. Like a brunch-set that comes with honey, candles, flour, cutting board and a honey spoon.
Honig Kuchen, Birmensdorferstrasse 109, Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 11 am to 6 om, Saturday 10 am to 4 pm

Web tip: Super Pixel Quest

It's unbelievable what  can happen if one goes down to the cellar to replace a broken light bulb. Super Pixel Quest is an amusing, very minimalist 1-Bit-web-comic by Emanuel Espinasse.
