Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 26.6.2014: Dragons, hat tricks & hooked on music

Dear friends

Just a reminder for Saturday. On the 28th of June, I'll organize the second Roof Top Day. You'll receive a special edition with the programme on Friday.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Concert: Mellow yellow

Benjamin Yellowitz is a musician from West London who has embraced the 21st Century idea of the singer/songwriter wholeheartedly. He’s got an acoustic guitar, on which he writes his delicate and subtle songs, but also a computer to layer beats and electro moods throughout. Think Frank Ocean and James Blake and you’re getting close. He plays at La Catrina tonight.
Thursday 9.30 pm, La Catrina

Festival: Rain, rain, go away

Despite my optimism toward the summer, it is possible this weekend won’t be the sunniest one we could hope for. I was going to let you know about the free open-air Landenbergfest taking place on Friday and Saturday at Wipkingen. A blues, rock and Latin music festival, with plenty for the kids to do early Saturday afternoon. If , however, the sun refuses to shine and you still want yourself some festival action, Friday night at Photobastei will see the inaugural Tonton Festival. Live bands including The Flying Moustache,
Big Tuna & The Penguins and Hangover-Jam
. CHF 10 at the door, and roof thrown in for free.
Friday 8 pm, Photobastei
Friday 8 pm, Saturday 2 pm, Landenbergfest, Landenbergpark, Wipkingen

Party: Here be dragons

If you’re feeling a little heroic this weekend and want to go on an adventure to the wild northlands in search of dragons, I hear Eglisau is the place to be. On the banks of the Rhine, about 30 minutes out of Zurich, is the annual Dragon Boat Race. Both local and international teams will be competing in what is now the oldest Dragon Boat race in Europe, and whilst it’s too late for you to register a team (maybe next year?), there is a carnival atmosphere during the day and great parties in the Schützenhaus at night.
Friday (party only) 10 pm, Saturday (races) 9 am until 7 pm (party) 10 pm, Sunday (races and prizes) 9 am until 6 pm, Eglisau

Party: Asleep for the summer

While most things go open-air in the summer, many clubs in Zurich close their doors for a break, until we need them again as the nights grow longer. Kaus is one such club that has its summer closing party this Saturday. As usual, this boutique club will be playing an eclectic mix of electro and house plus a few curve balls, just because they can. Djs Dejan, Kalabrese and Gallo will be playing from 10 pm with no closing time in sight. It is the last night after all, and there’s no tomorrow, tomorrow.
Saturday 10 pm, Kaus

Sport: The grass is greener on the other side

Do you like swimming in the lake? It’s much safer if you have life guards watching over you. So why not swim across this Wednesday as part of Seeüberquerung? They promise a great and unknown view of the city. However, I believe you’ll be too busy getting across. The length is 1,5 kilometres and if you feel fit enough, register on their website as soon as possible (spaces are limited). If it gets postponed to 9th of July or 20th of August (due to weather), they’ll let you know by text message beforehand.
Wednesday 3 pm, Mythenquai

Good to know: Venues to avoid the World Cup

I get really excited whenever my team plays, but I’m aware that not all of you feel the same about the World Cup. So here are some tips to enjoy a drink or meal without getting bothered by screens, screams and soccer (or football, but the «s-s-s« feels better). Sächseläutenplatz: The screen went up (for the open-air opera), the screen came down. Sächseläutenplatz by the opera house stays football-free including the bars on the square. Bei Babette: You like Idaplatz but don’t want to join the crowds? Bei Babette offers some peace and quiet next to the square that’s fiercely in football hands. Stadionbrache Hardturm: The communal garden in the former football stadium doesn’t transmit the games. It might come as a surprise, given the history of the location. But it’s been a long time since there was an official match held there. In the old town: Kantorei decided not to show the games, and their guests proved them right. If you don’t know the venue it might be time to visit it as it’s a splendid place just next to Neumarkt theatre filled with history and style.

Shopping tip: Hat tricks

Do you need a straw hat for the summer? In my opinion, LeTom from Zurich has one of the nicest ranges available. With fancy names such as Neverland or Singapore Sling, many of them Swiss Made. It’s most likely the smallest shop in town just next to the Freitag-Tower but always worth a visit. If you’re looking for more hat inspiration, check out the stylish gallery on Bluewin.
LeTom, Geroldstrasse 18, 8005. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 4 pm – 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 5 pm. Online shop available 24/7

Design: Award time

There are just a few days left to take part in the A' International Design Award and Competition. If you’re creative, send in your best designs for fame, prestige and recognition. If you’re not creative but appreciate art, browse the previous laureates. There is some cool design to be seen.

Web tip: Hooked on Music

So you think you know music? Well, some scientists would like to use you as a musical rat, of sorts, in an experiment they’re running online. The Hooked on Music game explores the science of songs, and more specifically what makes them catchy. Quickly identify a song, it will then go silent for a few seconds before it starts again. Does the song come back in the right place? The results may provide insights into long-term memory and provide therapeutic benefits to dementia patients. On a more personal level, you can brag that you know more music than your friends. Both outcomes, I believe, are equally valid.
