Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 19.6.2014: Open air, open station and the longest day

Rons Wohnungen in Zürich

It can be hard to find a flat in our beautiful town. To make the hunt a bit easier, you'll always find ads in my classified section «Roof over your head». To make it even easier, I've created a Facebook page where all housing ads from Zurich are listed.

Exhibition: Cindy, incidentally

Cindy Sherman is one of the great American photographers who has, over the last 35 years, used her photographs to highlight, criticise and upend many social stereotypes, especially of women, and she has done this using only one model  – herself. By the alchemy of make-up, wigs and costumes she can create portraits of herself in situations and likenesses that are both familiar and disturbing to us. Until mid-September the Kunsthaus has her first solo exhibition in Zurich called Untitled Horrors, which is a retrospective going back to her very earliest works until the present.
Thursday until 14th September, Kunsthaus

Open Air: Free. That’s the magic number

Old Grandma Ronster used to say to me, I shouldn’t pay for something if I could get it for free. This is partly the reason I have a small criminal record and wholly the reason I’m going to another free open-air music festival in Zurich this weekend. Openair Wipkingen takes place at its usual spot along the banks of the Limmat and this year they’ll be celebrating their 10th anniversary. As usual the line-up is pretty eclectic including the dirty rock of Who’s Panda, the underground hip-hop of Rootwords and the art-pop of The Bianca Story. Free entry.
Friday 6 pm, Saturday 3 pm, Wipkingerpark

Open Air: Openair opera

Where would you be if you were watching opera being performed under a starry night sky, as you sat beside a moonlit lake, quaffing your favourite drink and letting the warm summer breeze gently caress your cheek? One answer is that you might be trapped in my particularly purple-prosed imagination; the other is that you’re on Sechseläutenplatz this Saturday night. The Opernhaus will be filming the live on-stage final performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto and projecting it onto an 85m2 LED screen outside. Picnic baskets and folding chairs are encouraged, as are your thoughts that life doesn’t get much better than this. Free entry
Saturday 7 pm, Sechseläutenplatz (outside Opernhaus)

Stage: The longest day

This Saturday is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year, and to make sure that no second is wasted of this special day, a group of 16 artists, actors and musicians from Asia, South America and Europe will be staging an outdoor 16-hour non-stop performance at Zeughaushof. Each artist and performance will last for an hour before a new one starts, with the first beginning as the sun rises at 5.29 am, and the last performing until sunset at 9.26 pm. Go see the sun rise. I dare you. Free entry
Saturday from 5.29 am until 9.26 pm, Zeughaushof

Party: Solo no more

Dj and producer Stefano Ritteri has been a face on the London club scene for some time now, but he’s become mostly known by the moniker Solo, under which he’s released many an outstanding track, remixed for artists as diverse as Underworld and Depeche Mode and played underground venues all the way up to the mainstream megaclubs like Fabric. He’s now started his own label, Congaloid, and will be playing us a selection of the new music and artists he’s discovered and signed at Exil on Saturday.
Saturday 11pm, Exil

Eating: Best of World Cup

Instead of a bar or restaurant tip, I thought i'd share some more of the best  World Cup football venues around town with you. Zum Glatten Köbi: It was one of my favourite places to watch games for prior world cups so I’m relieved to see that they found a new home at Supermarket. The Highlight: A large selection of beers from (almost) all competing countries. Idaplatz: Last weekend the neighbourly open air cinema took over the space but now, all eyes are back on the green, especially at Calvados. Highlight: Great atmosphere and several venues. Zwinglihaus: The Kulturmarkt at Zwinglihaus shows all Swiss games (fingers crossed). Highlight: Mixed crowd and a nice space that you rarely visit. Fork & Bottle: Watch the games in the nicest beer garden in town (in my humble opinion). Highlight: Four huge screens and a great World Cup menu, plus the always fantastic beers  on offer . You'll find more locations on my map.

Good to know: All about trains

Zurich has a new main station. After many – many, many, many – years of construction work , the new platforms officially opened last Sunday. Their access comes in the form of the so called Gessnerallee passage. It connects the underground platforms with the main hall way and serves as an additional shopping mall. The time table as well as the platforms have changed: for example(51-54 don’t run anymore, instead you’ll find the number 41-44 but underground. So check out the schedule before heading to the station rather than walking around lost like a tourist. All information, including some stunning footage (if you like tunnels that is), you'll find on the website of Durchmesserlinie or SBB for the new schedule.

Shopping tip: Easy a Sunday morning

When I get home after work I seldom find the energy to think long about what I could cook for dinner. So it’s usually the same few dishes I prepare. But a bit of variety wouldn’t hurt my palate. This where Mise en place at Seefeld helps me out. They offer the ingredients for 14 rotating menus in the right proportions. Their range concentrates on regional products, organic if possible, including wine and drinks. Easy and uncomplicated just as I like it.

Mise en Place, Seefeldstrasse 12, 8008. Opening hours:  Monday to Friday 10.30 am to 9 pm, Saturday 9.30 am to 5 pm

Web tip: You're older than you think you are

Of course I get older (humans do) but I always think of myself as fairly young. But then I discovered the website You're getting old! Uuuh, shocking. But also fun. If you want to find out what your age means in relation to history, famous people or how many times you took a breath or had a heartbeat in your lifetime, have a look! And don’t forget: age is just a number. At least that’s what I’m (still) telling myself.
