Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 12.12.2013: Funny mother, dark clowns & sweet cakes

Zurich Photo Trip

Party: Lucky dip

It may be Friday the 13th but, depending on your musical outlook, an evening where you dance to elektro-trash, schlager, hip-hop, charts and samba could feel like either your unluckiest, or luckiest, night. In the Memphis bar, 13 eclectic djs with equally eclectic names such as Miss Grumpy Kitty, Lion King, dj Bratwurst and Drunken Nacho get half an hour each to convince the dance floor that their particular flavour is the sweetest. Free entry.
Friday 9 pm, Memphis, Langstrasse 119

Concert: Retro future

If you still get nostalgic for that endless summer when you were fifteen; joyous and carefree one moment and darkly yearning for a love that would go unrequited the next, then the girl/boy synth-pop duo from London, Summer Camp, have the soundtrack to your youth. Their music sits somewhere between the innocence of 60’s girl groups and the shine of 80’s pop but still manages to feel of the now. They play at Exil on Friday night.
Friday 7 pm, Exil

Party: Bug beats

Coming to Zurich on Saturday night is one of Berlin’s most influential djs, Steve Bug. Since his start in the techno and acid-house heyday of the early 90’s, he’s been developing and creating his own unique sound of stripped down, minimal beats that have kept him at the forefront of dance music for 20 years. The Soulshine night at Zukunft also includes djs Benja and Gill Gill.
Saturday 12 am, Zukunft

Concert: Long live kadebostan

Kadebostany are a band that says they come from the Kadebostany Republic, whose president is named Kadebostan. Now, I’m not one to burst anyone’s bubble but there is also an alternative story that says they actually come from Geneva and are one of the most interesting Swiss bands around. With Amina, a diva of the highest order, as singer and music that combines electro-pop, Asian rhythms and Balken-esque horns they may well take over the world. Including the Kadebostany Republic. They play at Mascotte on Sunday and i have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. E-mail me.
Sunday 7.30 pm, Mascotte

Comedy: Motherlover

The US comedian Margaret Cho has a new tour called Mother and it’s coming to the Bernhard Theater on Monday. If you thought a show entitled Mother would be soft and warm, you’ve probably never heard of Cho before. Her brand of comedy, and also the subtitle of the tour, is nothing is sacred, and from talking about sex, sexuality, politics and even her own mother it seems nothing is. This is raw, edgy comedy at its best and, despite the name, probably one not to bring the kids to.
Monday 7 pm, Bernhard Theater

Cabaret: Dark clown

We all know that clowns are terrifying. Be careful of anyone who tries to convince you otherwise, as they’re probably a clown in (non) disguise trying to corrupt your soul. To prove the point, go see The Tiger Lillies on Tuesday at Theater Rigiblick. This Brechtian-punk-cabaret band are led by falsetto voiced Martyn Jacques, who wears the face of the saddest clown in the world whilst he sings of songs of sin, death and love. They may come from London but are headed to a vaudeville cabaret in hell.
Tuesday 8 pm, Theater Rigiblick

Good to know: Public transport

This Sunday, the VBZ time tables change. For most of the tram and bus lines, there won’t be any changes. But here the main differences to know so you won’t start the week on the wrong foot, ahem, bus. Buses 33/72: The lines 33 and 72 exchange their routes. Bus 33 goes now from Tiefenbrunnen to Triemli and Bus 72 from Milchbuck to Morgental. Tram 17: Tram 17 will drive up to Albisgüetli from the middle of December during peak hours. Bus 71: An extra bus line will support the lines 33 and 72 between Albisriederplatz to Rosengartenstrasse when needed. Smaller changes: Line 5 will increase the rhythm during peak hours, line 7 gets larger wagons,  bus 69 won’t have any express buses anymore but leaves but increases its frequency. Line 77 will get a 10-minute-rhythm between 4-7.30 pm. Line 91 starts earlier and Sunday and will also be in service on Sundays as a trial. More information on the VBZ website.

Eating: Hand in hand

Even when the sun is shining, it’s getting too cold to eat lunch outside. So why not try Pasta a Mano at Konradstrasse (just next to main station)? You won’t find out much about the venue when you check their website, so I'll share a few details. Their concept: home-made pasta with a variety of sauces (from tomato to bolognese as well as lasagne) served hot to go or to eat there. Timeless Italian kitchen à la mama.
Pasta a Mano, Konradstrasse 40, 8005. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9 am to 4 pm.

Shopping tip: Cake in the city

Kreis 1 became a little bit sweeter. At least at Talacker, where Michelle’s Cupcakes opened her second store. Here you find everything your sweet heart desires: Cupcakes in all sizes and flavours (you can also get them customized), as well as various baking goods and decorations. Even if your sweet tooth has had its fill over the last few days, I’m sure you’ll find a spot for her cupcakes. They also come mini-sized (so you can try several!)
Michelle’s Cupcakes, Talacker 34, 8001. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 9 am to 6.30 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm.
