Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 5.12.2013: Shop til you drop, silence is golden & Pete Doherty

Zurich Photo Trip

Stage: Time tunnel

Theater Rigiblick have decided to do some musical time travelling this week, and both of their chosen destinations seem worthy of taking the trip. Tonight, Zappa, Alles über Frank goes back to the 70’s and looks at the avant-garde pop maestro/crazy genius that was Frank Zappa and his Mothers of Invention. On Sunday, in celebration of his 70th birthday, they travel back to the 60’s for the Jim Morrison Tribute. Both nights have music performed live, with the Zappa evening having some theatre performance thrown in, just as Frank would have wanted.
Thursday and Sunday 8 pm, Theater Rigiblick

Cinema: Silence is stolen

In this age of digital overload, the idea of going to see black and white silent movies may not seem like the most riveting thing in the world to do but the IOIC (which stands for the wonderfully named Institute of Incoherent Cinematography) may have something to say about that. From tonight until Sunday they are having a Marathon of the Arts event at Kunstraum Walcheturm, essentially a 4-night silent movie festival. Each evening runs from around 6pm until 5am (you see why they’ve called it a marathon) and will show some of the greatest international silent movies ever made. Along with each film you’ll also get to listen to live music being played as a soundtrack, from folk to classical to electronic. You’ll also see live dance, acrobatics, arts and magic performances. Now if that isn’t enough to keep you entertained, you may be a lost cause. I have 2x2 festival passes to give away. Just send me an e-mail telling me why you should be the lucky receiver.
Thursday/Friday 6 pm until 5 am, Saturday/Sunday 4 pm until 5 am, Kunstraum Walcheturm

Concert: Shambles

This next event should probably come with some kind of warning attached: Babyshambles are playing at X-tra on Sunday. Now, given singer Pete Doherty’s reputation they may or may not turn up for the show and if they do, there’s no knowing the quality but, but, but if they do show and they hit the mark, then this will be one of the best and wildest concerts you’ll ever see. His first band, The Libertines, led the way and set the tone for UK indie in the early noughties before their spectacular demise, and ever since he’s been threatening a comeback. Maybe this is it?
Sunday 8.30 pm, X-tra

Concert: The great escape

Do you like Bodi Bill or Polica? Then you will also like Claire, a dreamy pop mix of synthie-pop, electro and indie. The front woman Josie-Claire comes with a powerful voice and their concerts remind of a small piece of art. If you’d like to get a taste of their energy, the German band comes to town on Monday and stops at Hafenkneipe.

Good to know: Christmas shopping

Still in search for presents but not in the mood to go into the city centre? I whole heartedly agree! Last Saturday I had to turn around, as one shop was too crowded for more customers to fit in. I rather give the alternative markets a try. 1. Heiliger Bimbam: At Plaza (6-8 December/14 December) with daily changing local designer stalls is the heart for some serious (night) shopping in the districts 3&4 with various concerts, exhibitions, readings and degustations in more than 60 venues. 2. At Hannibal: Eat and shop til you drop at vintage furniture shop Hannibal this Saturday (7 December from 10 am). Everything on offer is self-made: knitted, sewn, cooked, baked or brewed. 3. Piccolo Mercato: Piccolo Giardino (8 December from 12 pm) hosts a premier with various labels presenting jewellery, clothes and delicacies. The team awaits you with hot Glühwein. 4. Maag-Halle (20-23 December), will mirror the Bimbam-event from this weekend with a focus on district 5, with 100 designers exhibiting daily and 30 shops taking place in the neighbourhood . Download their app so you don't get lost.

Eating: Going Indian

It's been a long time since I visited Munidal. But their chicken tikka masala was often on my mind, every time I craved Indian food. Last Thursday I finally went for dinner there again, and their chicken was as tender and tasty as in my memories. My friend had the lamb and loved it as well. It's just across from RiffRaff and for some reason, it's barely ever busy. Which baffles me: the food is great, the prices reasonable, the staff friendly and the interior cosy.
Mundial, Neugasse 76, 8005, open hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 2 pm & 5 pm to midnight, Saturday & Sunday 6 pm to midnight

Web tip: The king of snow

ChaoticMind75 aka Alexey Kljatov took an old camera and some scotch tape and managed to take beautful pictures of snowflakes. I'm happy to report that it seems to snow fairly often where he lives, as he captured cystals in all shapes and sizes. Beautiful. If you're not in mood for winter yet, have a look and the pictures will cary you to glittery winter-wonderland immediately. If you're already in winter spirit - enjoy!
