Concert: Pop pony

Good pop music can hit you like a ray of sunshine on a winter’s day, and seeing as it just happens to be winter outside the appearance of Pony del Sol at La Catrina tonight seems very fitting. Pony del Sol aka Gael Kyriakidis and friends from Fribourg, manages to sound both retro and current at the same time by using Casio keyboards and distorted ukuleles to keep her sparkling melodies floating in the air. She also recently won the first Contemporary Music Award from her hometown. If you like the sound of Metronomy, you should definitely take a ride with this little pony.

Cinema: Porny Days

Right on time to heat up the cold days: Porny Days, Zurich’s sex film festival takes place from 29th November until 1st December at Kino Roland and Club Kinski at Langstrasse. During three days you’ll find a wide range of films from entertaining to irritating, and from informative to arousing. You can watch amusing silent movies intonated by the IOIC (not totally G-rated), fascinating and controversial documentaries as well as contemporary erotic animations.

Concert: Old king cole

There was a brief moment in the mid-80’s when Lloyd Cole and the Commotions were the biggest/best band in the UK, and Lloyd Cole was mentioned in the same breath as The Smiths’ Morrissey as the greatest lyricist of their generation. Since 1990 Lloyd has been solo and creating low-key acoustic albums but with the same lyrical and melodic thrust he always did. He plays at Bogen F on Sunday.

Shopping tip: It’s coming!

Ok, so I’ve been in denial for the last few weeks but just like a seasonal King Canute I feel the inevitable tide of Christmas has started to lap at my heels. With that in mind, if you’re looking for gifts that are a little bit special, on Sunday in Stall 6 you can go to their Bazar. It’s a small market for creative, independent designers and artists, like Nina Bee and Jo Brauer, to sell their unique items. You can also get some food down there and be lulled into spending lots of money by the resident djs. Free entry.

Eating/Party: Lost in translation

If you're in the mood for a little Asian food, instead of going to your local take-out for a number 54, why not head to Longstreet Bar for the full immersive experience. Every Tuesday evening, Lil Kimchi takes over Longstreet and turns it into an Asian soup kitchen, with great soups for only chf 10 but also shows Anime movies, has a little karaoke session and ends the evening with appropriately dressed she-djs playing the latest tunes out of the East.

Eating: Going South

My secret escape to Ticino? I walk over to Zweierstrasse in Kreis 3 and, ecco, I’m there. Gabriella is the friendly owner and host of the osteria Büscion. She offers seasonal dishes, freshly prepared with a large portion of sun (and at reasonable prices) as well as selected wines from Switzerland’s south. I recommend to book ahead. Sa vedum, sa sentum!

Good to know: Ice rinks

The temperatures feel right to give ice skating a try. Heuried, Dolder and Oerlikon are ready for you, dressed up prettily with coloured lights and music in the air (maybe even Ice, Ice, baby). They'll stay open until 10th of March and on the first Wednesday each month (4. December, 5. February, 5. March) you can go for a free after-work-skate at Heuried and Oerlikon and on 5th January entry as well as rental is for free. A good start into urban winter pleasures even though the ice rink at the Landesmuseum won't open this year (again), due to (still on-going) construction work.

Shopping: Woodstock in the house

Inspired by the sixties book « Woodstock Handmade Houses», Ana and Alexandra bring the homely flair to the present and to Zurich at Idaplatz. The small locale next to Piazza will only be open until 7th of December. Until then you’ll find everything around Woodstock: vintage carpets from Marrakesh and bags from Etwas Bags to ceramics by Marc Digeros and various accessories.

Last Sunday I came across Incidental Comic by Grant Snider and got hooked right away. Somehow he manages to pass on daily life happenings in a philosophical and amusing manner in his simple drawings. Have a look, I’m sure work can wait a little bit longer.
