Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 7.11.2013: Jim the barber, treasure hunting & ship ahoy

Dear friends
I’m back and brought the sun with me. At least in spirit. I look forward to brightening your days during autumn rains.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Concert: Short back and sighs

For a man with such a preponderance of beard, the singer of Jim The Barber and his Shiny Blades seems to have a sly sense of humour. Their music, however, is a thing of melancholic beauty. The band, made up of piano, lilting guitars and double bass provide the intimate atmosphere whilst the voices of singers Mario Weiss and Cynthia Darioli dance around each other like lovers in the dark. They play at La Catrina tonight.
Thursday 9.30 pm, La Catrina

Stage: Oh la la

You know Zurich is at the crossroads of Europe when, in the German speaking part of Switzerland you can see a French comedy performed in the English language. Beginning tonight, and running until the 16th November, the Zurich Comedy Club will be performing Don’t Dress For Dinner, by French playwright Marc Carnoletti. As you might expect from a French farce there’s a lot of mistresses, wives, adulterers and chaos that get thrown together for our general amusement. Performed in English.
Thursday until 16th November 7.30 pm (Saturdays 5 pm), Theater im Seefeld, Seefeldstrasse 91, 8008

Game: Be prepared

Once the inevitable conflict for global supremacy begins between humans and aardvarks, (oh, it’s coming. Have you seen any around lately? Very suspicious) I know that being fully prepared and practiced for urban conflict will be all that stands between me and certain long-nosed death. Luckily, Gessenerallee have had the foresight to organise a Capture the Flag game on Friday. Capture the Flag sees teams competing to steal each other’s flag from areas controlled by them around town. The whole city becomes your field of play where any and everything in it becomes a pawn to use in reaching the enemy’s aardvark nest, erm, I mean flag. The rules.
Friday 6pm until 8 pm, Gessenerallee

Concert: Mø’ music

We’ve seen a few girls of late who seem to like their vocals carried along by a digital heartbeat rather than an analogue one. Lana Del Rey, Grimes, Say Lou Lou and most recently, Lorde have all shown that being a woman in pop doesn’t have to mean kitsch and bikinis. Now comes from Denmark, whose soulful voice carries over the electro bass and glitches of her music to create sparkling tunes of melodic lust and unrequited love. With her new album just out, she’ll be playing her only Swiss show at Papiersaal on Saturday night.
Saturday 8.30 pm, Papiersaal

Exhibition: Mysterious art

Do you know Joseph Pisani?  Ah, you should! The Zurich-based artist will hide four original paintings somewhere in Zurich. Starting from Wednesday you’ll find a riddle on his website with clues where to find a winning ticket. The lucky finders will be able to claim their prizes at the opening of his exhibition on Saturday 16th November at gallery Bachlechner. You’ll have to travel to the outskirts for this event, but ZVV will take you there.
Treasure hunt: Wednesday to Saturday / Exhibition: Saturday 16. November 2013 until 19. January 2014, Kunstgalerie Bachlechner, 8962 Bergdietikon

Eating: Limmatlädeli

When the wind seems to blow through all my layers, nothing warms me more than a hot soup for lunch. And if it’s made with love, natural ingredients and patience it also warms my heart. If you’re in need for a spot to brighten your working day, head to Limmatlädeli just next to Viadukt in Kreis 5. They offer five different home-made soups every week served with bread and an apple to keep you going in the afternoon. Unfortunately you cannot eat the soup at the shop but you’ll find shelter at Viadukt.
Limmatlädeli, Limmatstrasse 259, 8005. Opening hours: Monday to Friday 11 am to 6.30 pm

Good to know

Another three months passed and it’s time again to cast a vote for us Swissies. You see a direct democracy keeps you quite busy. But what is it all about this time round? I’m sure you noticed all the billboards around town stating 1:12. It’s not a forecast regarding Switzerland’s chances to win the soccer world cup next year but a proposal to limit top executive salaries at a one to twelve ratio against low-paid wages. As you can imagine, there are a lot of pro and contra voices in this matter. Socialists say aye, economists say no way. You  find more information about this initiative in English on swissinfo.ch.   Also on the agenda on 24th November are plans for an increase in mandatory fees for car owners using the country's motorway network. At present the tax sticker costs 40 francs per year, next year it could be 100 francs. The raise should cover costs for roadwork on additional cantonal roads, to commuters also known as bottle necks.

Shopping: Ship ahoy

At Geroldstrasse 5, in the middle of Zurich’s nightlife mile, a new shop dropped anchor. At Schiff Ahoi you find guitars, boots, sun glasses (hmmm) as well as clothes for men and woman - all in stylish rockabilly fashion. It’s also an acoustic shopping experience with a fine selection of old r’n’b, doo wop and of course rockabilly. As a welcome gift, I have a voucher for 100 francs to give away. Just send me an e-mail.
Schiff Ahoi, Geroldstrasse 5. Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday 11 am to 7 pm, Saturday 11 am to 6 pm

Webtip: Banksy in NY
While I’ve been away, Banksy has been at it again. The UK based street artist decided to set up a month long residency in New York called Better Out Than In, and throughout October created a new piece of street art every day. The results of his bombing blitz in the city that invented graffiti are recorded for posterity on Banksyny. Some of the pieces also have audio commentary and are well worth a listen, just on their own.
