Stage: Silence is golden

If lack of understanding the language is keeping you away from any of the stage and theatre performances around town then the Performance Art Festival at Remise tonight should be most welcome. Der Pfeil are a performance art collective who explore narrative not through text and words but with their focus on imagery and aesthetics. Tonight’s show will have four to six pieces performed by Der Pfiel and their specially invited guests.
Thursday 8 pm, Remise

Party: Festival 3000

Summer fever seems to be striking everywhere. Bar3000, not the most obvious bar to have an outdoor party, are opening their rarely seen back courtyard for the sole purpose of having a Summer Festival. There’ll be a grill and a bar serving what they’re claiming to be the best caipirinhas in town, along with live music from Brazil with Pedro Franco, and a Swiss/Greek combo called Teke Acoustic Sessions. After 10 pm the djs make an appearance to take you through the night.
Friday 5 pm, Bar3000

Festival: Dancing in the street

Every summer in the heart of Kreis 5 you will find the Röntgenplatzfest, which has been described as the “biggest street party in the city”. What began 33 years ago as a spontaneous citizen action for traffic control has now evolved into pretty damn fine street party. Over the two days of the festival this year you’ll get a choice of bands including Josh, Akku Quintet and Carrousel, while Saturday afternoon has entertainment for the kids. They’ll also be a grill ‘n’ chill area and dj Lance Vegas leading the way after midnight.
Friday 8pm and Saturday 2 pm, Röntgenplatz

Sport: Get up

Sup – Stand Up Paddling  - looks so relaxing that I want to give it a try. Seebad Utoquai offers regular lessons for beginners, always on Monday from 7.30-8.30 am and on Friday from 7.15-8.15 am and 8.30-9.30 am. Sounds like a peaceful start into the day. For naturals there is also a SUP-Yoga course this Saturday from 10-11 am. If you don’t fall into the water, let me know and I’ll pay you my respects in next week’s newsletter.
Saturday 10-11 am, Seebad Utoquai

Party: Here come the funk

WeFunk Radio is an award winning radio show out of Canada that, as the name suggests, plays the finest in funk, soul and hip-hop. It not only broadcasts live via radio, but is also available to stream via their website.  The show’s two djs, Professor Groove and dj Static, will be playing a selection of what makes them great at Stall 6 on Saturday night.
Saturday 10pm, Stall 6

Cinema: Fright night

As far as I’m concerned a weekend isn’t quite complete without a little sexual depravity and obscene debauchery, and if possible all in glorious 3-D. Thankfully, Xenix have managed to scratch my devilish itch on Saturday and Sunday with a showing of the Andy Warhol produced movie, Flesh for Frankenstein. Forget what you know about Frankenstein and his monster, this is camp, crude horror produced in the 70’s for the post-hippie generation. Xenix will provide the retro red and green glasses, and the movie will be shown on a specially imported analogue 3-D projector.
Saturday 9.30 pm and Sunday 7.30 pm, Xenix

Good to know: Pedalo

What to do when it’s hot in town and all the pools are crowded? Rent a pedalo or a boat. At Bootsvermietung in Seefeld you can also get a picnic basket to take on your romantic trip into the sunset with your beloved. Or go with friends for a swim in the middle of the lake.  1 hour / 26 francs / fits 4 people

Eating: Frozen delight

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream. Summer isn’t summer without a daily ice cream. One of my favourite is from Basel originally but also available in Zurich: Gasparini. It’s wonderfully creamy and comes in lovey combinations such as banana and chocolate. And of course I can never say no to Zurich’s one and only ice cream label Sorbetto (try Fior di Latte) or the Swiss classic Mövenpick (my tip: walnut).

Web tip: Urban signs

With so many inspirations lurking on the streets, Clet Abraham must be a very distracted driver. He was fined for vandalism several times in France. But I’m really happy to see that he continues his work to spread his humorous signs all around Europe. On youtube you find a clip of his works.
