Zurich (EN) : Zurich 11.4.2013: From the roof, John Grant & join the party

Dear friends,

When you climb a roof terrace in Zurich, you’ll get a completely different view of the town. Unfortunately, this pleasure isn’t available to everyone. The Roof-Top-Day should change that. Everyone, who fancies sharing his or her roof terrace luck, can contact me. And on 22 June we’ll all celebrate the day of urban roof oasis. Find out more about Roof-Top-Day / Roof-Top-Day on Facebook
Give my love to the city, Ron

Club classics

Classical meets clubbing again as BLOK plays host to another Ynight on Thursday. If you don’t mind your cultural references being shoved a little out of whack, Ynight bring the sounds of a concert hall into a club setting. Tonight they have Grammy Nominated classical singer Andreas Scholl and pianist Tamar Halperin performing songs from the Renaissance to Billy Joel. I’m not sure why musical history stops at Billy Joel in their repertoire but who am I to argue with the maestros.
Thursday 8.30 pm, BLOK

Silence is olden

Even if you knew nothing of the music they played, I’m sure there would be a part of you that wanted to hear Franky Silence & Ghost Orchestra simply because of their name. The music they do play comes straight from the American noir and vaudeville traditions of Tom Waits and has all the sepia hue of a Faulkner story. They’ll be playing at Kafi für Dich on Friday night and entry is free.
Friday 8:30 pm, Kafi für Dich

Once upon a time is now

It was one night last summer - or even the one before. And it was hot. A bad climate for a concert indoors but when Bodi Bill started to play I didn’t care about heat and sweat anymore, I just wanted them to keep on playing. Two of the three band members come to Zurich this Friday to the lovely Remise at Lagerstrasse with their new project The/Das. Accompanied by their friend Thomalla and followed by the house dj duo Sentiment, I hope their sound will transport me back to a time, when it was hot in Zurich.
Friday 11 pm, Remise

Vorplay birthday

The Renaissance Tower Hotel maybe isn’t the kind of place you would normally expect me to recommend, and normally you’d be right, but after the eruption of new sky scrappers that appeared in Zuri-West some time ago, come the anniversaries. As party organisers for the hotel’s Lucid Bar, Vorplay are celebrating their 1st birthday on Saturday. Also, as regulars at Hive, Vorplay have managed to steal away some of their best djs for the evening including Djs Manon, Gleichschritt, Luke Redford & Nici Faerber and Mewa & Jason Wallace. And, of course, a birthday isn’t a party without some free alcohol, which Vorplay will be supplying in sparkling wine form.
Saturday 9 pm, Lucid Bar in Renaissance Tower Hotel

Fireworks for better weather

It's that time of the year again, where a part of Zurich's male population plays Robin Hood - or at least men in tights. And when we get half a day off! The tradition dates back to the middle Ages. The festivities start with the children's parade on Sunday but the highlight is on Monday when the guilds march through the centre. At six, when the church bells ring (which is why it's called Sechseläuten), it's time to burn the Böögg, a snowman effigy stuffed with wadding and firecrackers. The sooner its head explodes, the better the summer weather forecast. Afterwards you can grill a sausage on the still-hot coals of the Böögg's pyre. The area by Bellevue will be very crowded but there are loads of stalls to get a bite to eat or a drink. Or join the infamous party at Mascotte.
Monday from 3 pm, city centre

Pale green ghosts

John Grant has lost some of the acoustic sounds from his first album and has waded thigh-deep into electronica for his second. As before, his songs are still creatures of warm beauty, with the lush fullness of his baritone voice at their heart and, as before, his words are as honest and revealing as a particularly guilty sinner at confession. He’s playing live at Papiersaal on Monday night.
Monday 8 pm, Papiersaal

Sweed launch

The Swedish duo The Knife will launch their fourth album on Tuesday. Quite an oeuvre, packed with 96 minutes of abstract electro beats, synth-pop element and the outstanding voice of singer Karin Dreijer Andersson. The siblings stayed true to their roots but added their solo identities (aka Fever-Ray and Oni Ayhun). Shaking the Habitual is not for everyone, but certainly worth a trip down the music discovery road. And you can stream the album at pitchfork.

Guiltless gusto

I like it when long thought dreams come true. Roland Wherle and his team dreamt of opening a fast food restaurant with healthy and tasty dishes. Since Saturday, you’ll find the third shop of Not Guilty (the other two are in Oerlikon) at Stauffacher. My favourite has always been and will stay the Tandoori Chicken Salad with spicy chicken, cucumbers, snow pea, bean sprouts and tomatoes – for me, individually without coriander. But the salad with beef, rice noodles and vegetables I had there yesterday, has become a close runner up. En Guete
Mon-Fri 6.30 am to 9 pm, Sat 8 am to 9 pm, Sun 8 am to 8 pm, Not Guilty, Stauffacher

City tomatoes

If you think yours is bigger than mine, frankly, you’re going to have to take a photo to prove it. ProSpecieRara are a Swiss foundation who are dedicated to saving endangered breeds of Swiss animals and plants from extinction. They are currently campaigning to save 130 old tomato varieties that are dying out, and you can help. Register at stadt-tomaten.ch and they will send you a voucher for a rare tomato seedling, which can be exchanged for free at one of their seedling markets. Take photos of your wondrous bounty, send them to the site and some great prizes are on offer for the best.
