Go to guro

Going to see Guro Von Germeten in concert is a lot like going to the theatre, or even the circus. She stands front and centre with only her whimsical voice, her red accordion and a selection of songs that are more fairy tale than pop song for company. She has a great reputation in her homeland of Norway and has even been described as the female Tom Waits. She’ll be playing her first concert in Zurich at Keller62 tonight.
Thursday 8 pm, Keller62

Low brow

If you’re a fan of low-brow or street art, Büro Discount is one of the best stores/galleries in Zurich. It’s the official shop for Bern based graphic-design collective Büro Destruct and, while you can buy posters, artwork, books and toys at their store, they also often have exhibitions showcasing some young Swiss talent. For the month of March they’ll be exhibiting 4 different artists from Basel, each with their own styles including ‘app’ design (Aron Summer) and hidden street art (Keep Watching Project).
Until 31st March, Büro Discount, Zurlindenstrasse 226, 8003

Pop-up clubbing

Pop-up shops and clubs are great but, by their very pop-upedness, can easily be missed before they’re gone again. But I’m sure that’s one of the reasons you signed up for Eagle-eye Orp’s newsletter, as I’m always on the look out for the fleeting and fun for you Ronsters. This Saturday at Hönggerstrasse 45, one such club is popping-up, called Wild at Heart it will have a fine selection of electronica played by a plethora of Zurich djs including Kalabrese.
Saturday 11 pm, Hönggerstrasse 45, 8037

Who is borgo?

Who is Borgo? The mystery has yet to be answered, but over the last couple of years he’s been arranging club nights across Zurich. This Saturday is his latest at Amboss Rampe. Djs Chesterfield&Malavasi and Bardo will be supplying the funky house tunes. I hear that Borgo himself will actually be at the party but seeing as they also have supplies of Borgo facemasks for you to wear, it could be a long and interesting evening.
Saturday  11 pm, Amboss Rampe

Dark metal

I must confess i’ve never been one to rock out to hard-pounding, longhaired guitar bands. I’ve always found them to be a little bit...boring, I guess. Sorry head-bangers. But there are always exceptions to every rule and in this case The Darkness are it. If it’s cool and sexy you’re looking for, you’re definitely in the wrong place but if it’s spandex leggings, handlebar moustaches and a damn good time, these boys are for you. They played a gig in London a few years ago, and it was one of the best times I’ve had at a live show. They play Komplex 457 on Sunday night. Prepare to be rocked.
Sunday 8 pm, Komplex 457

Eat the wall

The sunshine in my face makes me believe that spring is already here. Just the right feeling to visit the garden fair Giardina in Oerlikon viewing outdoor furniture and the latest garden trends. Such as the edible wall by Veg and the City (hall 2 / F 18 at the fair), an installation that transforms your balcony into a small vegetable and herb garden. It has an integrated watering system which you can attach to the tap easily.
Wednesday & Thursday 9 am to 8 pm, Friday 9 am to 10 pm, Saturday & Sunday 9 am to 6 pm, Messe Zurich

The art of espresso

Maria is passionate about coffee and in particular, espresso: “When I drink an espresso, I want it to look good and give my taste buds a joy ride through the strong yet delicate flavour that only a grand espresso can give. The grand espresso is like a passionate, delicate, spine tingling bacio… the kind that will sink into your bones and remain with you forever.” She searches Zurich for the perfect coffee and shares her findings on her blog coffeemezurich.com

Good to know

I love to browse through pictures of times gone by and to imagine how I’d have lived and worked back then. The department for building history launched a facebook page at the beginning of the year, on which they post historic pictures and facts regularly. Perfect for a fantasy journey through the past of the city.

New for old

Just a short while ago, it was a place for music and concerts, now there are furniture, lamps, carpets and other bits and pieces for sale. I’m talking about Manessestrasse 170, formerly known as Abart. Its new name: Brocki 170. To celebrate its opening they offer a 10% discount on everything until Saturday.
Thursday & Friday 10 am to 7 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm, Brocki 170, Manessestrasse 170, 8045

Concerts in Zurich – preview
This year, I already suggested several great bands. To make your scheduling easier, I compiled a playlist of concerts that I think are worth visiting. Listen and enjoy…
