Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 8.11.12: Pop-up, Swiss Bond & moon trip

Dear friends
I totally forgot to inform you which other entries were short-listed for my t-shirt contest. I was too busy concentrating on setting up the 100-Days project with Olivier. So sorry about that and a big (delayed) thank you to all designers who took part. You already know the winner. And if you’d like to get one of the Ron T-shirts, you can do that on the 100-days platform.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Season's Greetings

The Zurich Comedy Club is among the leading English-speaking drama groups in Switzerland and presents two plays per year, one in May and one in November. This year with Season’s Greetings at Theater im Seefeld. In the comedy, relatives and friends (senile uncle, pregnant sister, alcoholic sister-in-law, incompetent doctor etc.) are forced together for three days over Christmas and the chaotic atmosphere becomes explosive.  As long as it’s not my own family, I love a get together of such emotionally unstable characters.
Tickets: 28-38 francs.

From today until 10 November, 7.30 pm (Sat 5 pm), Theater im Seefeld

Nordic atmosphere

I dream of travelling to Finland. The Northern Lights should be spectacular this year (so if anyone would like to sponsor me, let me know!). But now, Finland is coming to me - well, us. Seven Finnish women, all working and living in Switzerland, exhibit and sell their own art, craft and design products (such as handbags made of reindeer leather) until Saturday at the pop up store Sumoi (Felsenegg-Keller, Spiegelgasse 18). Maybe I’ll find my Aurora there.
Thursday / Friday 12pm to 6 pm, Saturday 11 am to 5 pm, Sumoi

I fink, therefore I am

Singer/songwriters and club dj’s are different species of artist and exist in very different worlds, but Fink is an exception. He started djing for dance label Ninja Tunes but in 2006 had a dramatic change of direction and became a singer/songwriter of wonderfully organic and brooding songs. Backed by acoustic instruments and gentle string arrangements, his aching voice will bring a warm sepia tone to Komplex 457 on Saturday evening. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away. Email me.
Saturday 7 pm, Komplex 457

Birds in the pampas

Grundton plays host to the Hamburg dance label Pampas Records at Hive on Saturday night.  Pampas has been the home of some great house and techno innovation for the last couple of years, and a couple of their major acts will be performing. Experimental duo Die Vögel will be playing live, while dj Axel Boman, whose breakthrough hit Purple Drank took him into the limelight a couple of years ago, will be supporting.
Saturday 11 pm, Hive

Moon trip

According to popular urban legend, if you listen to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon at the same time as watching The Wizard of Oz, the two synch up perfectly and you can enjoy having your mind blown as Dorothy realises she’s not in Kansas anymore.  Theater Rigiblick have taken this idea and made a truly synchronised event. They have adapted the music of Dark Side of the Moon to piano and string quartet and then entwined it with a reading of a great Ray Bradbury short story, Kaleidoscope. This is one of the
greatest science fiction authors and one of the greatest albums of the 20th century in perfect, blissed-out harmony with you along for the space ride.
Tuesday 8 pm, Theater Rigiblick

Spiritualized have always created hedonistic music; indeed their own mantra for doing what they do is ‘taking drugs to make music to take drugs to’. But they were never a band just to party with. With elements of gospel, psychedelia, rock and dance music all swirling around a cloud of dense emotions, this seminal UK band will move your soul as well as your feet. Touring a newly released album, they play at X-tra on Wednesday night.
Wednesday 8 pm, X-tra

Eating: Sweet Basil

The Thai just around the corner has a new owner, and a fresh dress. Over lunchtime, there a four dishes available with fish, duck, chicken (from Switzerland) as well as a vegetarian version. You choose what you wish to eat at the counter and get a full plate right away. And it tastes very good! For the price of 19.50 for the vegetarian dish including a drink, I think it’s good value at Sweet Basil. En Guete.

Good to know

The Swiss landscape has provided the backdrop to a number of Bond films in the past, like the ski scenes in ‚On Her Majesty’s Secret Service‘ and the bungee jump in ‘Golden Eye’. As the first James Bond film was screened in 1962, the series celebrates its 50th anniversary with the latest release ‘Skyfall’. It’s supposed to be one of the best 007 films of the last two decades. The adventure of the British secret agent begins with the search for a hard disc that stores information about several NATO-agents. And he dies. Well, not really of course. But I don’t want to spoil the story. But I wanted to tell you more about James’ Swiss connection: he is half Swiss! In Ian Fleming’s original, his mother, Monique Delacroix, was a mountaineer from the Canton of Vaud. So what you considered to be cool Britishness is actually partly Swiss. Who would have thought? The film is screened in various cinemas throughout town.

The other fashion week

If you hear the words Fashion Week, you probably think of London, New York or Paris. But not Jamaica. Or have you ever heard of the Caribbean Fashion Week? Vice travelled to the 12. Fashion Week in Jamaica and shows in documentary in three parts what’s going on behind the scene and questions some questionable fashion trends such as skin bleaching.
