Brooklyn has been the place from which a lot of bands have emerged over the last decade or so, all with an interesting take on indie-pop and now, sticking their little heads out of this same musical hole, are White Rabbits. Their music is built on a solid chassis of bass, (two!) drummers and guitar but the bodywork is pimped using synths and electronic slashes that keep things ever so slightly funky. I’d suggest following these White Rabbits down the rabbit hole and see where you end up. They play at Rote Fabrik tonight.

In the early 70’s, criminally underrated artist Gordon Matta-Clark did something I’ve always felt a primal urge to do – roasted a whole pig on a spit in the middle of town. He cooked, filmed and served it under the Brooklyn Bridge and called the piece ‘Pig Roast’. This weekend Station21, a gallery specifically for young artists, have invited 2 artists from Bern to show at the gallery. Julius von Bismarck will be showing his new exhibition titled Punishments, which on Friday will also include a re-enactment of ‘Pig Roast’. Not only will you see the art but you can taste and munch on it too. On Saturday, Andreas Egli will examine and discuss the themes and issues raised by Julius’ work.

Weekends are made for mooching around markets and this weekend, with the summer sun making a much-promised appearance, is no exception. The Vintage Market at Rosengarten will have a great selection of vintage clothing and accessories for you to rummage through, and if finding a beautiful bargain, sunshine and being Saturday doesn’t make you whelp with puppy-like glee they will also be serving cupcakes as well.

The Asteroids Galaxy Tour is a perfect name for this Danish band. Their music refuses to fit into any confined space or genre but rather travels to all reaches of the musical universe, all the while powered by a little space ship called pop. With so much going on in the music, it’s a miracle that lead singer Mette Lindberg can still sound so distinctive but with a voice you’ll either love or learn to, she clearly does. If you’re looking for something sticky and sweet on Monday night, they’re playing at Abart.

This Tuesday is the 1^st May, which also being known as International Workers Day means, for most of us, we get to internationally stop working for a day. Apart from the rioting there isn’t much going on during the day in town. If you want to stay off the streets and enjoy an old fashioned UK themed Bank Holiday, the Big Ben Pub has a darts tournament going on but I’ve heard a rumour that the place to be in the afternoon is at Bäckeranlage. If you like to party and enjoy a surprise musical guest or two, get yourself down there.

Berfe became a pastry chef at the French Culinary Institute in New York. Last fall she moved to Zurich and now creates customized cakes for any occasion under the name Baked by B. The pastries on the website look so I good, I want to taste them all. If you do too, don't forget that you need to order them in advance. But I assure you; it’s worth the wait.

This Friday, South Africa celebrates its Freedom Day, the date of the first democratic elections (1994) in the country. There doesn't appear to be any offical celebrations going on in town. But if you'd like to celebrate the democratic spirit, book a table at Mama Africa, the South African restaurant in Zurich West or get a bottle of great South African wine for a party at home.

I love independent magazines, as they don't have to answer to a large overhead and therefore try to take new paths. The text and designs reflect the passion and dedication of the founders. The website No Layout is a digital library for independent publishers, focusing on art books and fashion magazines. Great to browse through on a rainy afternoon.

I very rarely write lists; this may be one of the reasons why my cupboard is always bare and the things I have ‘to-do’ always need to ‘get-done’, but others are not so list shy. Listsofnote is a website dedicated to the lists of famous people.
