Soul balm

Even though Michael Kiwanuka has been voted the winner of the UK Sounds of 2012 poll, his songs sound as if they’ve been daubed with a liberal coating of 1969. With his longing, soulful voice and acoustic guitar for accompaniment his music certainly isn’t the adrenaline rush of, say, blindfolded snowboarding but rather the slipping into a warm bath afterwards.  If you’ve had a tough week and deserve a little mental massage, he’ll be playing at Mascotte tonight.
Thursday 7.30 pm, Mascotte

Two for you

Für Dich – meaning ‘for you’ – has earned its name by becoming the favourite café for its neighbourhood since its launch in September 2008. For this Friday they organised two concerts: Jazz over lunch, folk in the evening. So you can start your weekend early by heading over to Für Dich for lunch, listening to Ueli Heiniger, bass, Patrick Horat, drums and Gabriel Stampfli, guitar. Then spend the afternoon with coffee and home-made cake reading a book and finally order a beer while singer/songwriter Gibsy Rufina sets up for his Italian punk folk session. Entry is for free.
Friday 12 pm & 8.30 pm, Für Dich

Shop for one day

On Saturday, the pop-up-store Alles schöne Dinge (all beautiful things) pops up for one day at Neugasse 41. It presents a mix of Zurich labels ranging from jewellery, living accessories to fashion. Additionally you can drink punch, eat cake, get your nails done or even win one of several prizes in the draw. Sounds like a good program for a rainy afternoon.
Saturday 11 am to 8 pm, Neugasse 41

Happy birthday

This Saturday, Le Calvados celebrates its second anniversary. Congratulations! You might know the place at Idaplatz from the Swiss series „Lüthi & Blanc” which is rescreened this year. But since its film days it had a serious make over (well, two years ago) and became a beloved haunt for watching football. Head over at 2 pm for sausages and beer or the Super Idaplatz Rallye (whatever that might be) at 4 pm, or join the celebration later when the djs set up their decks at 10 pm.
Saturday 2 pm to 3 am, Le Calvados

No sense

‘Twas sliny in our statey, And I wibble a gron to do.
The skryn were all a’shinlig, With the filafung fellin too.
In mine visquith came a pootle, A misage full of krorp.
‘To the strauhof, must hake you maste’; Sline my grinley fremp Orp.
Translation: If you’re bored and the weather isn’t great, why not get yourself down to Museum Strauhof for the Nonsense exhibition this weekend.
Learn about and listen to nonsense poems and stories by Edward Lear, Lewis Carroll as well as some German and Swiss nonsense poets too. Scottish actor Graham F. Valentine reads texts in English. I promise, your inner child will thank you.
From Saturday to 3rd June, Museum Strauhof

Taking the stage

Provitreff is an institution, I can barely remember a time when the venue wasn’t part of Zurich’s nightlife. If you didn’t visit it so far, give it a try this Saturday when three one-man-bands and three djs are playing rock 'n' roll, disco, techno and house on the small brand new stage. If the weather is nice, you can also grill right at the riverside. Unfortunately, it probably rains. But grilling with an umbrella gets you at least in some kind of summer spirit. And King Automatic, The Micronaut and Lucky Loop will make sure to warm you up afterwards supported by the djs Matilada, Rosp and Botico.
Saturday 9.30 pm, Provitreff

Wild world

The internet has become a huge, global mirror that can be held up to our existence and reflects exactly how weird and beautifully strange we really are. With two laptops, a projector and a screen, Die Videoten at Stall 6 will use text, photos and video to illuminate the lunacy of everyday life. They will also be using a Stalin Organ, which may sound musical but seems to be, in fact, a Soviet multiple rocket launcher. Strange indeed.
Tuesday 8.30 pm, Stall 6

Gourmet Burger: Korner

Yesterday, the new burger restaurant Korner opened its doors. As you know, I like my burgers, so I went ahead and tested it before its opening. Just thinking about this large, juicy burger, my mouth begins to water. It was the highlight of the meal but I also liked the rest: next to a large variety of English beers, tasty fries and a selection of sauces the venue is also really beautiful. Not only will your stomach and your eyes enjoy the meal but also your conscience as the motto is:  Eat local, drink global!
Korner, Gartenstrasse 10, 8002

In situ

A few weeks back, Australian author Helen Fitzgerald was reading at Kaufleuten and I had some tickets to give away. JJ was one of the lucky winners and took the opportunity to chat with Helen Fitzgerald about her work. Read the interview in the online magazine Words with Jam.

more
All I knew about Aurélie before our rendez-vous at Péclard was that she was French and had a blog about Zürich. I would soon learn more interesting things about her, like how she started blogging because an Argentinia...

If you're looking for something (a flat, a ticket, love), have something to give away (a flat, a ticket, ex) or have anything else to say, then this is the place to do it:
