Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 15.3.2012: Irish pub, French music & a problem with bugs

Dear friends
Those who work with online media know the problem – BUGS. They sneak in and try to change the system. And until we find the problem and are able to fix it, a couple of weeks have gone by. Latest example: Our Cityscribe section. Therefore, further below, are some of the entries that were supposed to be published over the last two weeks. Big apologies to the cityscribes who were hoping to see their articles published before.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Mother nature

Tonight is another documentary in the ongoing film series entitled Nebenrolle:Natur at Rote Fabrik . For one Thursday a month, until June, they are showing documentaries about our world, nature and the effects of human involvement. The first film is the visually stunning documentary Home, which examines the interconnectivity and fragile balance of our planet. After the film Andreas Edelmann of 2000 Watt Wohnen and Dr. Harald Sodemann, a climate scientist at ETH Zurich, will answer questions. Entry is free.
Thursday 8 pm, Rote Fabrik, Aktionshalle

3 is the magic number

Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana. I can’t believe it’s been 3 years since Härterei opened its doors and like any respectable toddler, will be throwing a 2-night electro-pop/hip-hop extravaganza to celebrate the anniversary. Icelandic groove-meisters FM Belfast have been invited to bring their chaotic party vibes to Friday night and hip-hop royalty, in the form of dj Muggs of Cypress Hill, will be playing on Saturday.
Friday & Saturday 11 pm, Härterei

Tour de Zurich

Moods will be bringing us an evening of French delights on Saturday with a double live set from singer L and rapper Karimouche . L comes from Paris and brings with her that city’s mix of ethnic rhythms wrapped in the warm seductions only French singers can evoke.  Karimouche, on the other hand, incorporates the eclectic inspirations of cabaret singing, dance and acting to her beat-box driven rapping.
Saturday 8 pm, Moods

Green Day

This Saturday, wearing green is a must, as we celebrate St Paddy’s day. In this spirit, a new Irish Pub opens its doors on that special day: The Pub. From 6 pm DJ Frédéric sets the tune and you get Irish beer as well as Irish stew. Sounds like a good place to start before heading to one of the parties in town: Irish Festival with live folk music Volkshaus, Music of the 80s and party tunes at Nelson Pub or house and club music at Lady Hamilton Pub. Happy St Patricks Day!
Saturday 6 pm, The Pub / 8 pm Volkshaus

Over the ocean

Think big, is what Phonoflakes , a band from Zurich thought when they toured through the US for the first time. And got full success. Signed by a Californian label, they have just finished their second US tour, including a series of concerts in Mexico. While they play overseas in front of large audiences, you get the chance to see Phonoflakes in an intimate environment. Very intimate, as the concert takes place at Hafenkneipe this Tuesday. Expect melodic power pop and a lively live show.
Tuesday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Eating at Zeughaushof

The sun is out and it’s lovely to spend lunch hour outside. But for me, it’s still too fresh for a cold lunch like a take away salad or sandwich. This week I discovered Zeughaushof . Outside, you’ll sit in the middle of Kasernenareal which feels like an oasis within the buzz of the town. Inside you find an airy, comfortable room. They offer several changing menus over lunch, seasonal and regional. The waiters are lovely and if you bring your sunglasses, you might never want to leave.

SXSW music

South-by-South-West (SXSW) is a sprawling citywide festival that takes place every year in Austin, Texas and features music, film and technology. It is one of the largest music festivals in the world with over 2,000 new and established acts playing across 90 venues. What I love about SXSW is that they provide a (legal) torrent file to showcase tracks from most of the bands playing. This year’s sampler file contains 1,219 tracks.  If this is too much for you to swallow in one go, someone has already listened and filtered them into a ‘best of’ podcast. This is a fantastic way to discover some great new music.

Ron’s Favourite Song

Sounding just like the distant echo of the summer days to come, Lay Your Cards Out by Poliça is intense and beautiful. Enjoy.
