Mix ‘n’ match

Just like a helium filled jelly, you may find it hard to nail Dutch dj/producer Martyn down. His djing style is chameleon–like in its ability to blend into the many genres that he plays, and ends up calling his own. He may have started as part of the drum ‘n’ bass scene but now dubstep, house, electro and even a few heart quickening pulses of rave are in his musical arsenal. He plays at Rote Fabrik tonight.
Thursday 8.30 pm, Rote Fabrik

Scotland, the rave

London has always been the UK’s alpha-dog when it comes to dance music and clubbing but more recently Glasgow based dance label Numbers have been scrapping for a fight to dislodge the old dog, and they just might be succeeding. At Hive on Friday, SubClub host a Numbers label night with three of the best from the label. Redinho will be playing his warped beats live, while djs Jackmaster (winner of breakout dj, 2010) and Deadboy will prove why Braveheart isn’t the only thing the English need to be afraid of.
Friday  11 pm, Hive

Seattle lovers

What does Nirvana have in common with hip hop? Seattle, the home of both Kurt Cobain and Shabazz Palaces! Creating complex tracks with elements of jazz, world music and house, their visionary sound also appeals not just to hip hop lovers but also to friends of electronic music. This Saturday, they come to Stall 6, visiting Switzerland for the first time.
Saturday 11 pm, Stall 6

Spice up your life

Do your taste buds need a change? Do you have a delicate palate? For one week from Saturday, Mourice Mikhail - known for tasteful combinations mixed from his own stock of 200 flavours - will create you an individual mix at Markthalle (at the stall of The Pie Shop). You’ll receive a barcode of your personal spice at the end, so you’re able to get it again afterwards.  Special salts and peppers are available too, so there is nothing to stop you having your own hot and spicy weekend, if you know what I mean.
Saturday 8 am to 8 pm, Markthalle im Viadukt

Best of british

Filmstelle, is essentially Zurich university’s film club and every semester the members choose a series of films based around a common theme. This semester the theme is The British Isles. Every Tuesday, for the next few months, they will be showing some fantastic films but the first is the Shane Meadows directed, This is England. Set in the early 80’s, a time of great social upheaval in England, the film follows 12-year old Shaun as he looks for comfort in the welcoming, but dangerous, embrace of a gang of skinheads.
Tuesday 8 pm, Filmstelle, Universitätsstrasse 6, 8092

Last days of February

With all the cutting edge genres of music that float around the Zurich clubs and bars, sometimes all I crave is a big fat slice of sweet indie-pop to munch on. I know it may not satisfy all my needs but it tastes damn good while it’s going down. So, Swedish band Last Days of April will be my tasty treat next Tuesday at Hafenkneipe. Imagine the Lemonheads with a little less golden sunshine in the mix and you’ll be getting close to their sound.
Tuesday 8 pm, Hafenkneipe

Stylish Asian

You don’t get many options at Talacker . Daily, they serve one Asian menu with or without meat (always 24 / 19 francs). If you don’t like what’s on offer you can order the weekly special or choose the Udon soup. Taste is great, service friendly and quick, the sofas very comfortable but the noise level is quite high. Talacker is the place for urbanites who like quick Asian food, to consume it in a stylish ambience and appreciate a strong espresso after the meal. Take away is also possible. Talacker, Zürich
Talacker 41, 8001 Zurich

Water out of thin air

If we are talking about the future, here is the winning Airdrop Irrigation Project by the Australian designer Edward Linnacre. The project is based on the fact that the air, even in deserts, always contains a certain moisture content and therefore, water. The Airdrop irrigation device collects this water and transfers it the ground for farming. Learn more
