On the monney

La Catrina is a great little Mexican bar (think tequila, not tacos) hidden away in Kreis 4 that forces bands to play up close and personal with the crowd. This is due to the size of the place rather than as a form of punishment. Tonight, Monney B, the lead singer from Hell’s Kitchen, a Geneva based gravedigger blues band, has broken away from his gang and will be screeching and rattling the walls with a solo gig.
Thursday 9.30 pm, La Catrina
All that jazz

Every Friday for the next few months the restaurant in Volkshaus transforms itself into a jazz club. This Friday, the Kaleidoscope String Quartet is playing. Not wholly classical or jazz, they combine elements of pop, rock and jazz as well as creating groovy rhythms and beats with their instruments.  If you’re still got a jazz itch after the concert, the evening goes on until 3.00 am with a jazz-lounge vibe and spontaneous jam sessions.
Friday 10 pm, Restaurant Volkshaus
Members only

Friday is the last night open to every Ron, Dick and Harry before Cabaret becomes a private members club and you need a special key ring to enter. So, you can go and dance like it’s your last time or go and dance and follow the instructions to become a member. Either way, I suggest you dance. Now, as an alternative to Cabaret and, as the cool Ronsters that I know you are this may be tough for you to hear, there is a ‘bad taste’ party at the Alte Kaserne, and while they expect you to make less than zero effort to look good, bathrobe and boots plus or minus a sombrero has been suggested, the excellent djs more than make up in the style department.

Man-machine

As the boundaries between man and machine become increasingly blurred, it takes an artist to show us what a possible future holds for us, and according to Stelarc it goes way beyond the IPhone. At Migros-Kulturprozent, Stelarc shows some of his works over the last few years including exoskeleton, a six-legged life size walking machine and an artificial ear that is attached to his forearm and can receive and send signals. More surprisingly, many of his art/technology pieces have become useable realities. It is also the Long Night of the Hotel Bars on Saturday, and so if you need a little old fashioned entertainment after the high-tech Skynet predictions, it seems a good way to unwind. Just make sure your phone didn’t get any ideas above its station.

The great Ronsby

Who needs a time machine when you have Cabaret Voltaire? This Saturday they bring the roaring 20’s back to life with a fully themed night of feather boas and dandies. They have a live band to Charleston to, belly dancing Absinth girls (who knew such a thing existed!), poker and even silent movies. They expect a little effort from you, so dress the part. My Good To Know has some ideas of where to get a costume.
Saturday 9 pm, Cabaret Voltaire
A love tale

Did you know that Zurich has an English speaking Comedy Club which meets once a week? It’s not like they’re new! Their first meeting was more than 55 years ago. And with all the experience at hand, they currently play Graham Reid’s Remembrance at Theater im Seefeld. The performances start today and continue until 18 November.

Living room atmosphere
In 2009, the Wohnzimmerbar (Neugasse 75) opened its doors just next to cinema RiffRaff. As the name suggests (Wohnzimmer means "living room"), it’s small and pleasant and the atmosphere familiar, filled with comfy chairs, small tables and a chaise longue. Starting this month, every Tuesday they’ll host an Indian buffet at their long table (seats 10 guests). All you can eat for 25 francs. I haven’t tired it yet, but as one of the managers lives in India a few months every year I believe it must be good.
Tuesdays from 6.30 pm, Wohnzimmerbar
Good to know

I have two events listed this week which require dressing up. Also, in December there are often fancy dress parties so I thought I would provide you with some addresses for your costumes. Fancy dress: Möller Kostümverleih has the right dress for you for any occasion. You want to be Cleopatra? They have it. Invited to a pirate party? They have it. You look for a country specific outfit? They have it. And ten thousand other costumes right in the store. Hair: For a fitting wig, a matching moustache or perfect make-up, I always head to Haar-M. at Langstrasse 195. If you’re in a mood to chat, ask him about his Furrii project. Party tricks: When dressed up, I always like to have a few tricks up my sleeve. At Zauberparadies you find everything you need for any party trick you can think of. And much more.
Ron’s favourite song

Last week I came across the mysterious artist Kindness. His latest song Cyan seems to move from my ears directly to my legs and feet. There isn’t much about him online. So just let his music speak for him. That’s all we need anyway. Right?
Listen.
The world in five years

Not a week goes by without the invention or presentation of a new technology. So how will our technological daily life look like in five to ten years? Microsoft thought about it and caught a possible future on video.
Watch.
