Experience video

Weststrasse is changing – gone are the cars, quality of life has arrived instead. And it’s increasing: Gallery Fishpiece opens its doors this Thursday at Weststrasse 145. The opening exhibition focuses on their core strength: video art. The white cellar will be transformed into a video art experience with installations, projections and sculpture.
Thursday 6 to 10 pm, Gallery Fishpiece
Birthday attraction

For 5 years, Magnet has been one of Zurich’s main party labels bringing the sounds of house and techno to the masses. To mark this occasion they will be celebrating their anniversary at Hive this Friday with super dj/producer duo Hanne and Lore, who have been rising and rocking through European clubs over the last couple of years with excellent releases on labels Monaberry and Style Rockets. Also a selection of local dj talent such as Regional Liga and Reto Ardour will be returning to recapture some of their past Magnet glories.
Friday 11 pm, Hive
Co-workers of the world, unite

In the employment eco-system, freelancers are the tigers. Creatures who do their best work in solitude but will engage with others when necessary. Now betahaus have created an oasis for the freelancer to come and enjoy an open, flexible and collaborative workspace. Converted from an old city centre barn the space is ideal for those needing access to a conventional office rather than just a laptop and bench. They kick-off a summer trial, until 2nd September, on Saturday with a bbq, bar and djs , it also gives you a chance to meet your fellow tigers and swap jungle stories.
Saturday 5 pm, betahaus, Zweierstrasse 176
Goodbye and goodluck

Normally I like to tell you about new openings in Zurich, but this time I have sad news of a closing. Hubertus Restaurant will be shutting its doors after this weekend but they wanted to make sure they go out with a bang. They will fire the grills up over the whole weekend with a suckling pig to tuck into on Friday and fine djs such as Huck Finn and Le Coq Du Rock will serenade Hubertus to its final hours. The sun may be setting on this Zurich institution but I’m told it will be shining all weekend, so go along and say your farewells.
Friday to Sunday 6 pm, Hubertus Restaurant, Letzigraben 101
Cyndi, incidentally

Madonna may have been crowned the queen of 80s pop but there was another girl around at that time who may have sang a little odder and looked a little stranger but had a few hits that still sound like classics today. I’m talking, of course, about Cyndi Lauper. If Girls Just Want to Have Fun and Time after Time bring back neon coated memories for you, you’ll be glad to hear Cyndi is live at Kaufleuten next Tuesday. She's touring a new blues covers album but I'd be surprised if she didn’t throw in a couple of the old hits.
Tuesday 8 pm, Kaufleuten
Post-punk park

Next week in the warm twilight of Bäckeranlage, you can hear the dark and dream-like sounds of Settore Giada, a local post-punk, minimal pop duo whose use of unusual instrumentation and sounds bring out the feeling of a city throbbing through a heat wave. Listening to music of the city, whilst sitting in a leafy park, being surrounded by the city itself seems a very Zurich-in-summer thing to do.
Wednesday 6 pm, Bäckeranlage

Good to know

Soon, summer school holiday starts in the city. If you don’t go away in July and August you might still want to take a little trip outside of town. For example to the Sihlsprung. There are two ways to travel to the origin of the Sihl.  Either you take the train to Sihlbrugg and start hiking from there or you cycle all the way. If you go for the more strenuous option, keep in mind that you need a mountain bike for the second half of the route. From Sihlbrugg onwards it goes over hill and dale. After admiring the Sihlsprung you should continue for a little bit. Until you reach Sihlmatt, a restaurant which serves the best and freshest trout. A nice treat after all that work.
Lunch Butler

Juice Market is a great place in the middle of old town to get freshly squeezed fruit juice obviously but also tasty sandwiches, soups and baked potatoes. Its location, with outdoor seating, is excellent for people watching and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. For the month of July they are offering a new service called Lunch Butler, which will deliver to offices and locations within half a kilometre of the shop and, this is my favourite part, will also deliver lunch at set times of the day to Lindenhof and Bürkliplatz. So order yourself a picnic and enjoy an al fresco lunch in the city.

The mask

SBTRKT isn't an easy name to remember. But the English producer doesn't care as he prefers to stay anonymous. Nonetheless he gets a lot of attention as his music convinces with futuristic beats experimenting with future garage and dubstep. This week, his debut album was released, which you can also stream on his website.

Get fixed

For all of you who're not interested in bikes – sorry! I'll soon move on to another topic. On the page Bike By Me all two wheel lovers can create their own fixie bike. Starting out with a blank bike you're able to individualise it with various colours. The prices around 650 Euro are not low, but you don't pay for any shipping costs worldwide. Pimp your bike!
