Happy days

If you lived in Zurich five years ago, you might remember the legendary club Dachkantine. If not, you have a chance to get a hint of what it sounded like this Thursday at Soussol with dj Nader and dj Carlo. Soussol is one of my favourites in town, especially when it plays host to electronic minimal.
Thursday 9 pm, Soussol

Indie excellence

Kelly Reichardt is an American independent film director who, since the mid 90’s, has been producing gentle and minimalist films. If, like me, you enjoy the so-called ‘mumblecore’ genre of recent American movie making then Kelly’s for you. Xenix are having a season of her films this month, with Friday being the premier of her latest, Meek’s Cutoff. And as an extra cultural hug, those nice people at the Embassy of the USA have invited all ticket holders to a drink at the Xenix bar before the movie starts.
Friday 8.30 pm, Xenix

Go, go, go

If neon pink were a band then it would be The Go! Team. Mixing pop, hip-hop and freestyling into raucous 3-minute songs full of energy and chaos The Go! Team have figured out how to bottle electric delight and give us a glimpse of it on stage. They play live at Stall 6 this weekend and I’m making sure I go to get a taste of their candy adrenaline.
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

Underground, overground

Zurich may be small but it has a large, vibrant arts and underground scene. To highlight this, Soundabout has organised a bunch of local Zürich bands to play all weekend long using either their own band rooms or small venues throughout the city. Just like a city wide festival, the bands will play at set times throughout the weekend and you just need to choose which stage to be in front of. Whatever your taste in music I guarantee there will be something to please everyone.
Saturday and Sunday, from 2 pm, citywide

Creative kids

Blickfelder is an arts festival centred on the Theaterhaus Gessnerallee but spreading its arty tentacle’s throughout the city. It's focused primarily on the young with its creative workshops giving kids a chance to sing, act and generally mess creatively around. But it also welcomes those of us over the age of 12 with performances from dance and theatre groups from all over Europe. If you’re not sure which sounds better - messing around or watching theatre groups - then welcome to my world.
Monday until 27 March, Theaterhaus Gessnerallee

Second coming

When Glasvegas’ first album came out in 2008 they became superstars. For a band from a poor Scottish housing estate writing about social workers and football hooligans it must have been as much of a surprise to them as everyone else, but once you heard the songs and emotions within them, you understood. They’re now back with their second album, this time produced by Flood and recorded in California. To hear if Californian sunshine can beat Scottish rain for musical excellence, see them as they play their only gig in Switzerland at Abart next week.
Tuesday 8 pm, Abart

Veganism in town

In December, a vegan bakery and kitchen opened at Müllerstrasse. It’s a spacious, bright venue that offers vegan meals for lunch or in the afternoon. I especially like their sandwiches to go, hummus, I love you! I’m surprised that I don’t taste a difference between their gluten-free bread and my usual. So for a meat free meal, give it a try!

Good to know

I have to admit – I’m not a big fan of Fasnacht. But I like the seasonal sweet pastries. The Fasnachtsküchli are light, crispy, sugar-dusted cookies. The bakeries have mostly given up when it comes to that product, as Coop and Migros are selling tons of these sweets. Literally tons! The Swiss dish was mentioned for the first time in 1761 and was very popular until the middle of the 19th century, as you only needed a pot with hot oil for its preparation. So, if you haven’t had your share, give them a go, as Fasnacht will be over in a few days, and the Fasnachtsküchli have to make space for the Easter bunnies.

Ron's favourite song

Adele is on tour around the world, and although Zurich is really on the way between Munich and Milano, she won’t stop in Switzerland. Such a shame! I’m grateful to live in modern days where I have the chance to see her perform in person whenever I want. So for this week, Someone like you is my favourite song. To the song/video.

Calling home

Not only E.T. needs to call home. The young woman in the video How are you? phones her mom and tells her about life in the city. How great everything and everybody is. While you listen to the conversation you’ll see the reality. A life on the street. It’s an impressive video which takes your breath away. Watch!
