Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 3.3.2011: Sausages, Sinking Ships & Singles

Dear friends

I already received a few e-mails recommending blogs in English about or from Zurich. Send me an e-mail if there is one you like and I’ll post an overview later this month.

Give my love to the city, Ron

Sausage fever

Footballs fans in Switzerland will agree that something from the grill is a must when watching a game. According to the book Stadionwurst (stadium sausage), sausage is the tasty common denominator in Swiss football. The authors and photographers roamed Swiss stadiums and portrayed the found fan and football culture. In the same manner – with sausage and beer - the book will be launched at Amboss Rampe this Thursday. I have three copies of the book to give away. It’s in German but contains many pictures.
E-mail me to get a copy.
Thursday 8 pm, Amboss Rampe

Sinking ships

I think Kafi für Dich is a great place to meet up with friends during the day. It’s large windows, park view and minimal wooden décor give the place a very relaxed feel. During the evening the coffee house vibe disappears a little but you’re still left with a great place to hang out. To add to the evening’s entertainment this week, Gordon Bell and the Sinking Ships will be playing live. They are a trio, led by an escaped Scotsman, who play pop music that is a little dark and rough around the edges but still retains a sense of faded glamour.
Friday 8 pm, Kafi für Dich

Single time

It's great to be single if you have single friends. If you don't, there is a good chance that you sit home alone on Sundays and struggle to find company for holidays. The event series 1:1 tackles this problem and gives singles opportunities to connect. It has its first party at X-tra's chill out room this Saturday. To join the party you have to be over 30, come with company (single gal brings single guy and vice versa, gays bring gays), and you have to register your names beforehand on the website. Your name is then on the guest list (entry still 20 francs) and you can pass the teenagers waiting in line. See, getting older is not too bad.
Saturday 10 pm, X-tra

Openair, undercover

As a teaser for the coming summer months, Stall 6 is hosting a first openair festival this weekend. Of course, as it is only a teaser, the openair will in fact be undercover of a roof but we shouldn’t let a small detail like that put us off. The event is being organised by kuenschtli.ch, and Berlin band Grossstadtgeflüsster are headlining with their undeniably danceable mix of shiny pop and dirty electronica. It may not be the summer extravaganza you’re used to, but it’s a start and all good things come to those who wait.
Saturday 10 pm, Stall 6

Wandering words

Ever since Bob Dylan revealed the lyrics in his ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’ video, moving text and creative media have come together to enhance each other. Now in this age of digitization we encounter words in motion in many ways, whether on a television or computer screen, via music videos, movies and advertising. Museum für Gestaltung has an exhibition, running until 22 May, that looks at how words in motion have come to dominate and influence our everyday experiences.
Sunday 10 am, Museum für Gestaltung

A different planet

Last Monday I had lunch at Planet 5: A great burger served with high concentration. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and trains young people who didn’t find an apprenticeship. It’s a great project at a great location, especially in the summer when you can sit right at the Sihl.

Pop power

When it comes to creating pure heavenly pop there are two demographics that excel: the Swedes and girls. So when you hear that Those Dancing Days are both Swedish and female you’ll be pleased to know they’ve fully embraced their pop persuasions. Part northern soul, part 60’s pop and all girl-power they bring their charms to Mascotte next week. I have 2 x 2 tickets to give away.
E-mail me.
Tuesday 7 pm, Mascotte

Good to know

Yesterday you found a plastic bag in your mail box (post, not e-mail) by Texaid. It’s for your old clothes and shoes and on 15th March you can put it outside (as you would with old paper or cardboard) for it to be picked up. The profits will go to charity. If you don’t have time to sort out your stuff this week you can bring also bring it to one of the containers around town. Fill in your postal code on Texaid’s website and it will give you a list of containers in your neighbourhood.

Ron's favourite song

Last august I introduced you to the song The City by Five Years Older. The band was flattered and gave us a song to download in return. The track Hamburg takes a large step away from the band’s usual electronic timbre and reminds with soft bossa sounds that warmer days are waiting for us.

When music grows up

Only independent musicians without a label contract are allowed to upload their music to Weekly Indie. So far about 10 million songs are listed on the platform. Each week, a top ten gets selected and offered as download. It’s a great way to discover new artists or to share your tunes with others.
