Finders, keepers

In the grand scheme of things, objects are never lost they are merely unexpectedly located. This means nothing, of course, when your mobile phone is still travelling on that tram you just got off. But now, VBZ are trying to balance the karma by holding a Lost Property Auction. Whether it’s a phone, iPod, video camera, clothes, jewellery or even shoes you’re bound to find something to bid and buy in this Aladdin’s cave of unexpectedly located goodies.
Thursday 2 pm, Fundbüro

Future folk

Throughout space and time the Zurich duo Zigitros gather their inspiration. Musically this band combines the ancient folk stylings of instruments like the ukulele and balalaika with the modern electronica of the 21st century, and recording their music across the world in Berlin and New York. Finally, Zigitros have settled into the here and now and will play La Catrina this Friday.
Friday 9.30 pm, La Catrina

Raining in my art

Following several solo exhibitions in his native Basel, the artist The Umbrella Kid shows for the first time in Zurich with his exhibition Pan’s Demonium. Using the shadowy interplay of black and white photography with the geometric lines of concrete and urban landscapes, his art has a familiar yet surreal sense to it. The exhibition is at Galerie ARTseefeld until the 19th March but begins on Friday with an opening party.
Friday 6 pm, Galerie ARTseefeld

Animal magic

Cosmic Animals are a group of djs who have been summoned from their galactic travels to play the mothership of Provitreff. Led by Acid Pauli, known for his sets at Berlin’s Bar 25, he is backed up by dj Loopus, Matilda, Renoiser, Botico and Rosp, all fine electro djs in their own right.  Zurich band The Free Hats will be playing a live concert later in the evening and the whole thing is open ended. Not even the sight of sunshine will scare these animals away.
Saturday 10 pm, Provitreff

Brooklyn beat

Certain cities seem to spawn certain types of bands. Brooklyn, for the last couple of years or so, has specialised in boy/girl groups playing electronic dance-pop and, next to be fired from that creative cannon is The Hundred in the Hands. Like Sleigh Bells and Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs before them, this duo have an odd name and know how to mix the sharp and spiky with the deep and dancy. If you want to see this ‘next big thing’ at Mascotte I have 3 x 2 tickets to give away.
E-mail me.
Monday 9 pm, Mascotte

Good to know

I want to find the best bloggers in town. If you have any recommendations you can add them under the category city bloggers on my website. The blog should be in English and about Zurich. Here are my favourites: Art - ElH-Reports presents a personal view on Zurich’s art scene. Fashion - Playlust catches what’s now, wow and next. Travel - Spotted by locals unveils favourite places of locals. Expat - From A to Z, Kristi tells how Zurich feels if you moved here from Atlanta. Food - My Kugelhopf hast the nicest share of food pics. MusicLandlocked Blues focused on high-lighting good new music coming through Zurich. If you know other bloggers in town, let me know!

Eating: Grüntal

It’s time for a low key restaurant tip which serves traditional Swiss dishes with a twist. In summer restaurant Grüntal in Wipkingen is mostly fully booked as it has a pretty terrace with Limmat view. But the food is great at any time of the year. The served meat is mostly organic and the menus seasonal. You can go there for an intimate dinner but you also don’t feel out of place after a run along the river (maybe a walk if you tend to sweat a lot).

Info graphics en masse

I found a wonderful graphic tool. With Gapminder you can transfer a huge amount of data into informative graphics. The service is for free and if you take a few minutes to grasp the concept, it’s easy to handle. Did you know for example that in 1990 268 million Chinese lived in cities and their life expectancy was 69 years? Ten years later there are 452 million people in the city and the life expectancy increased by 4 years. You find that boring? Then create your own graph.
