Fade to gray

In pop-years, time always seems to go so quickly. It’s already been 10 years since Macy Gray conquered the world with her hit ‘I Try’, and now she’s back with a new album. Still blending the soul and pop of her previous outings, this is a chance to see her at her only show in Switzerland.
Thursday 8 pm, Kaufleuten

Laundry laughs

Comedy Laundry continues to bring the best comedy to Zurich from all over the world. This week’s show the two comedians hail from the USA and Crazyland (UK). Dave Fulton brings his US perspective to all things European, whilst George Egg brings some crazy as well as the worlds’ second largest briefcase containing props for his stand-up meets music hall act.
Friday 8 pm, Mascotte

Glimmer glamour

The Glimmer Twins, alias Mo & Benoelie, are two Belgian sound freak djs with a passion for pleasing the crowd. Inspired by Grandmaster Flash and DMC contest tapes they started djing together in 1985 in a small club in Ghent. Now resident at one of Belgium’s top clubs, they will be playing this weekend at Plaza.
Saturday 10 pm, Plaza

Insider art

Make sure you get on the ground floor of the next big thing in the art world and also get an insider’s view of the local art scene. Art Tours, Etc is organising an event, as part of Kunst Zurich, for gallery owners to talk about the work and art they are displaying and selling as well as the business of art and what sells these days. Who knows, that scratchy painting you’ve been working on of your neighbours cat may be your ticket to the big time!
Saturday 4 pm, Kunst Zurich

Centre of the world

Switzerland may be landlocked but that doesn’t stop the world from beating its way to our door. Transmundial is the first World Music festival in Zurich that is truly global. Artists from every corner of the world will perform including Aynur (Kurdish), King Kora (West Africa) and La-33 (Columbian). If you’re looking for inspiration for your next trip away, then let the music inspire you.
Friday & Saturday 8 pm, Moods im Schiffbau

Eat your beets

Bloody Beetroots’ music style is called Italo rave – an electronic catching rhythm underlined with heavy hard core. When I listened to their songs for the first time I thought it’s a death metal band (also the masks!) but then the sound changes, and changes. I like! Enjoy a trashy Tuesday at Alte Börse! The beets call for exclamation marks, sorry!
Tuesday 7.30 pm, Alte Börse

Good to know

It’s voting time at the end of November – I’m sure you noticed the posters. Once more, the main topic concerns immigrants and foreigners in Switzerland. The so called Ausschaffungsinitative sees that all non-Swiss who live in Switzerland are to be sent home if they get convicted for a crime. Any crime.  This goes a bit too far for the left parties, so they formulated a counter initiative that only wants to send away people who were convicted with 18 months imprisonment. Or were convicted twice within ten years. For Amnesty International both initiatives go too far. The photo exhibition Kubaki concentrates on a similar topic: racism in Switzerland. It gives 15 Africans a face and a chance to tell their story. This Saturday the showroom turns into a concert hall with quintet Rämschfädra from Wallis and Sorah a Zurich singer/songwriter. The exhibition goes on until 19 November at Töpferstrasse 26.
Saturday 8 pm, Kleintheater Töpferei

Sweet affair

Melanie Studer fell in love with cupcakes when she saw them displayed in a bakery in England. Since then she tried to perfect various kinds of cupcakes and fattened friends and family. Under the name Cupcake Affair she’ll open her first shop at Spitalgasse 12 in the middle of Niederdorf. Go and try some at the opening this Saturday.
Saturday from noon, Spitalgasse 12

Create A Second Identity

I like being present on the internet but sometimes I don't want to reveal too much of myself. Doppelme is a useful helper for this issue: it's an easy web app to create an avatar within seconds. There are lots of features to choose from so that you can create a little man/woman that looks very much like you. I wish I could create such a doppelgänger for real life too sometimes.

Switzerland? Kashmir?

What do you think about when hearing the word 'Kashmir'? I'd say it's political instability and uproar. This is why I was intrigued by the title of this short video: 'Kashmir - A Skier's Journey'. The video itself is not less intriguing, as the Asian way of life combined with a skiing adventure is a pretty unique mix, and the pictures are amazing too.
