Zurich (EN) : Zurich, 18.2.10: NY Fashion, film festival & all about cheese

Dear friends,

Last weekend, Ron and his NY crew took snapshots of fashion victims, trendsetters, friends and street artists on their way to New York Fashion Week. Out of them, we created the WENEWYORK & RON NY LOOKBOOK.
Give my love to the city, Ron

Hallo Gast, du hast:
Run, baby, run

The hot French band Pony Pony Run Run from Paris pays us a visit. You might not know them, but Phoenix and Air do, and they are fascinated by them. You can give them a look here  and keep in mind it is free entry at Alte Börse on Thursdays. Afterwards, the show goes on as usual, this time with the Turntable Girls & Makanoy VJs! See you there.

Thursday 10.30 pm, Alte Börse

The other film festival

EWZ.Stattkino (formerly volts&vision film festival) takes films and adds other art forms to them. Cabaret (18 Feb.) is combined with a live burlesque show, while Vanishing Point (21 Feb.) comes with a soundtrack by DJ Dan Campo, and Kill Bill Volumes I & 2 (27 Feb.) are screened simultaneously. In case your German’s still in progress, “statt” means “instead of”.
17 Feb.- 27. Feb, EWZ.Stattkino

Burlesque in the city

Pantichrist is now a  personality in Switzerland, and he and his favourite girls are coming again to Zurich to Cabaret to show us how it is done. The Pussywarmers’ music (and the burlesque ladies’ hot show) will make you forget the cold outside. If you missed their cabaret night last year, this is your chance. Take what you learn from the show and dance the night away to voodoo rhythm sounds. And remember: the first 20 guests wearing Pantichrist panties gets in free.

Friday 10 pm, Cabaret

Come on Vespa (or by foot)

Once a month, Sugar Daddy brings yesteryears’ subculture to life in an authentic environment at St. Pauli. This time it is a Mod generation revival! Travel back in time to the United Kingdom of the early 60s: think trendy kids on scooters and sounds by The Who.
Samstag 11 pm, St. Pauli

(Dis)appearing act

Two years ago, the theft of four famous paintings made the headlines in Switzerland. Especially when two of them appeared in a parked car in Zurich.  The names Cézanne, Degas, Monet and van Gogh became part of daily conversation. The pieces belong to the French impressionism collection Bühler, which is now wholly displayed at Kunsthaus until 16 May. Except for the two missing paintings of course.
Sunday 10 am - 6 pm, Kunsthaus

Born in the USA

No, Bruce Bringsteen isn't coming to Zurich, but two other Americans are. John Francis was the houseguest at La Catrina this month and played there each Tuesday. This Tuesday is the last gig for the folk-country singer/songwriter. On Wednesday, Mascotte presents Adam Green on his Minor Love Tour. I'm usually not a huge fan of Green, but they say he reinvented himself with this album. So I'm giving him another chance.
Tuesday 7 pm, La Catrina
Wednesday 7.30 pm, Mascotte

Good to know

Yes, I'm back with fondue and raclette. Winter is in town, the streets are white, but the season for melted cheese is short. In December I told you about my favourite restaurants for cheese dishes. This week the theme is home sweet home: where to get good cheese for a homemade fondue or raclette. Most of the time, I'm too lazy and just pick up a pack at Migros or Coop. For Fondue, you cannot go wrong if you choose a package which says moitié-moitié (which means half, half) on the wrapping. Zurich's cheese shops boast a much larger variety and can advise you on everything.  Züritipp compiled an entire list of the best spots. Here are two of my favourites from that list. Chäs Stöckli: A small shop just next to Schaffhauserplatz. There, I even found goat and sheep cheese for one of my friends who was intolerant to cow milk. Markt am Bürkliplatz: Several cheese stalls compete for attention. I love this market close to the lake for its convenience. When you purchase your cheese, you can pick up the other items on your grocery list at the same time. For all the Brits amongst you: If you miss your cheddar (or any cheese from home) check out the British Cheese Club where you can order your favourites online.

Some works of art deserve to be mentioned simply because of their creators’ stamina! For example, the short film Bad Apple, in which the artists put together 6,566 small images for a mini-animation, brings new meaning to the word perseverance. Also in this category is the duel between two comic figures, one of whom literally loses his head. I don't even invest that much time in my whisky collection. Respect!
